THANK YOU for such a concise yet comprehensive overview... It has given me a better understanding of trunk to limb reduction (for trunk taper) ... And also of planned scaring & the healing process I'm a newbie on the bonsai scene but luckily have access to an old garden to be remodeled ... So I am in the process taking aerial layers from mature plants ( wisteria, jap maple, crab apple, cotoneaster & crepe myrtle thus far) I was planning to transfer them to large pond baskets once rooted (for root development) ...in the meantime, this video has directed me towards LIMBS for trunk reduction - so BEFORE I cut out upper growth I'll graft new buds IN (as required ) & THEN cut to the newly established branchlets ... Should have some "fair" training specimens in 5 years or so & a lovely bonsai collection in 10 ... Again , Thankyou for a brilliant overview of some key developmental stages I'll need to look at

I’m just an amateur bonsai grower. My thickest bonsai trunk is a Japanese maple that I was growing and chopped off the top when it looked like it was dying in my clay soil. I dug it up, plopped it into a container with compost and potting soil and it survived. That was many years ago. It is still in its planter pot and the trunk is quite thick and aged. All my other bonsai attempts are young and have nice little trunks. I like the little trunks too. I also have several Japanese maple trees thriving in my little backyard and giving lots of shade during the summer months.

Nicely done video, friend! I always enjoy seeing more of your trees. I'm really stuck on that Field Maple... I like it's style... The cut of its (Barry) Gibb. I have been training most of my Acers in (somewhat) that amalgamated method discussed on that last Deshojo. But there are a few that are aptly angled that I will be leaving the top on for a few years, and maintenance pruning and wiring the foundations of "the tree" within that first branch for a few years before removing the top. When, at either 3:49 or 8:49, you say, "This is an old Beech." I shouted "YOU'RE an old Beech!" 😂😂😂😂😂

Hi Stefano, would be happy to help. In the end it is not all that dificult, but for the first one or two trees it is nice to have someone walk you through the process & choices! Aim for taper, movement. Low branches thicker than higher branches. Shorter internodes over long internodes.

Great video Jelle....simple, concise, and common-sense. Question: I once saw a video where an older oriental man said - "You want thick trunk, use big pot! Big pot makes big roots which allows big trunk...." It stands to reason...everyone wants to get their tree into a tiny, shallow bonsai pot as soon as possible which surely inhibits trunk growth. The whole concept of bonsai is based in the idea that smaller containers reduce top growth and thus keep the bonsai with finer grow and smaller for longer. Bigger pots lead to better growth. Tooo big a pot however, can hamper growth because the substrate stays too wet. Maximum growing speed is had by uppootting as soon as the roots have filled the container, and going only one size container up

Its such a shame we live such short lives compared to our bonsai. You are still a young man and have years to enjoy their maturing. I'm 65 and well aware that I will never see my plants grow thick trunks with taper. But I continue on anyway. I daresay they will end up in the dumpster one day, along with most of my belongings, as I don't have anyone to pass them onto. But In the meantime I continue to water, fertilize, repot, and chop....what else is there? Thank you for the channel.

Dear Bary, time is relative. I focus on enjoying the now. I grow from seeds, cuttings, get big trunks and can be tempted to get a nico pot every once in a while. It may sound cheeky, but the journey is more important than the endgoal to me. So in my garden there will always be more projects than finished trees. I am sure you will see many of your projects grow bigger, more beautifull and enjoyable!

I built a soil box 3 ft deep, wide and 10ft long and planted a few of my Pre Bonsai in there instead of in the ground for 5 year's to thicken the trunks while maintaining the apex. works out nice and fast within 5 to 7 years there ready for a pot and 8 to 9 year's ready for root reduction. Keeping in with what you do on top but keeping the roots free to explore and grow to there heats content keeping pre bonsai in pot's will take forever stunt it's growth maybe never get past what you want in a lifetime! Yes we want a dwarf tree but there is a fine line from stunting a tree's growth like foot binding! Once there at a certain stage there locked to this till they get repotted into a bigger pot if still training the bonsai and not just maintaining a show tree! What we look for is simply root growth and lots of it at a young age, keeping them pruned every 2 to 3 year's for best results before a tree takes on a stunted growth period and slows right down! You may have experience this at some time in your hobby? Elms are particularly prone for taking on this, pushing out lots of new growth before it stops and stays in a frozen state with half grown out foliage from new buds! I seen this exact thing happen on fb the other day on a syberian elm! The trainer was very confused till I suggested a slip pot into a bigger pot and nice soil! Loose the Akadama for a growing season or 2

Great video. I would like to see you take a standard nursery tree and chop it, with explanations and future plans. Keep your videos coming. Can I chop the same tree each year? When can you chop a nursery tree for the fist time? Spring is usually mentioned, but to buy a tree at a nursery then, the trees have already pushed the new leaves. Do I buy it the previous year and wait? I find very little information on the details of this process. Yamadori are not available to me and the prices of mature specimens is too high, especially given all that can happen to them. This year we have had strong winds blow even tied down trees around, and my lawn service has managed to reek havoc on many of my trees. They even hit my low bench with their equipment, knocking several trees off without mentioning it to me. Yes, the answer should be to get a new lawn service, but they are all too busy in my area. I can't even get ones who will use a push mower. They all just want to sit and weed wack. I have extensive gardens of other flowering plants, trees (container grown Japanese Maples,) and shrubs, too. I have four trees that I have bought and cut down in spring, but I don't know if I'm doing it correctly. Thanks.

Hey Zantlo, lots going on for you I hear! Strange question.. Remove the lawn and let flowers grow? In any case, would love to do a video like that. In fact, I have done a mute video today working a maple. For you, right now: Pruning nursery trees, if healthy, can be done mid spring. I have never understood the obsession with the pruning before leaf-showing. Optimal response by the tree is when it is active, at the height of the growing season. That is when I do big chops! Will look into making one. Guess that means.. Nursery trip?
