Not bad result and the water treatment definitely helps to encourage roots. Cheers

Thanks for the long term development videos Jelle! I just attempted my first air layer with middling success. Got a few roots but also a partial callous bridge because I left too much cambium in. It’s very hard to judge how much to take off! This is the first time I’ve heard of letting the area dry a little before wrapping with plastic.

Normally the back and wood are very different in hardness. You do not need to get the wood off, just scratch it so you get the living cells off.

Excellent job, in my decades long association with tress and dozens if not hundreds of attempts to air layer, I've yet to have a success. It's nice to see that the process is not just a myth 😂😂😂
@GrowingBonsai Жыл бұрын
Wo, any idea why you were unsuccesfull?

@@GrowingBonsai Not a clue, lol . I don't waste my time with it any more, just stick to cuttings

I sometimes think of air layering as a preparation for growing a cutting. Instead of thinking of cuttings and air layers as distinct techniques I think of it more like a spectrum. Managing foliage at time of separation seems to help. The one tree I could not get to grow roots via air layer was my ilex serrata. I don’t know why it failed but I will take the top off as a cutting while dormant before bud break in the spring and see how it goes. Keep up the good work!!! Mats

To me they are fundamentally different, in that a layer is provided with water and nutrients for the duration of the rooting process, whereas a cutting needs to survive on whats there at the time of separation.

Hoi Jelle, volgens mij gebruik jij ook pumice in je mengsel. Ik heb grote cementbakken met grote dikke prebonsai. Is pumice ergens relatief goedkoop in grote zakken verkrijgbaar? Bedankt!

Bonsai Dusseldorf heeft het redelijk betaalbaar. En de website vulcastrat, zeg ik uit mijn hoofd.

Hi Jelle, could provide a link, whree you purchase the tall ziploc bags you use for cuttings? Can't seem to find the correct shape/size bags. Thanks

What substrate exactly did you use for the layer Jelle...?

to be honest, I do not recall. Normally I just use my regular substrate kzbin.info/www/bejne/n2LdoJlmqrmsjZI

Interesting that many ppl like yourself say to remove the cambian layer while others say not to remove it. Both seem to work though.
@GrowingBonsai Жыл бұрын
leaving the cambium is a risk. Those are the cells that are able to restore the bark. I cannot imagine why someone would recommend to not remove it.

Warum so ein langer gerader Stamm , soll er ein Hochstamm werden ?

Aim is to develop a tradional broome zelkova. That requires a straight trunk. It will be left to grow out for a few years to fatten up though.
