Net the cherry tree now if you want to save your future harvest from the birds! I've lost my cherries to the birds for last many years running because I never get around to putting the netting setup over my cherry trees before the birds have decided that the fruit are ready 😅

That horrible neighbour moved yesterday too out of the blue from underneath me and a new tenant moved in the same day, who's lovely, so I'm finally totally safe out there too. Looking forward to seeing how the garleek goes, does sound yummy 😋. The exact details are a bit fuzzy on them from what I've read. It's made to sound like they are a cross but I'm not entirely unconvinced that it isn't a garlicky tasting leek. Doesn't really matter either way 😅🌱👍

Hey Joe 👋 so interesting you mention that! On the tour of the site I did last week with the plot neighbours, I was eating raw three cornered leek and that was very garlicky, so I know those flavour combinations are already out there! Let's see if I can grow them first...the pot was looking a little crispy today from all the sunshine 😆 🫣

From my understanding the breeder chose out and bred the leeks that had a natural garlicy flavor to them. It took about 10 before they could bring it to market. It's quite fascinating.

Great update Laura, love the sound of Garleek and look forward to seeing your progress with it. Fingers crossed for a decent harvest with the left over potato🤞🏻. Have you considered carrots for spent compost too? I would think they could also do well, as they do better in poorer soil and the structure of compost seems to be ideal for their growing requirements. Really pleased to see your cherry tree doing well. I have failed miserably the last few years with masses of early blossom and poor pollination. I think most bees were still asleep at the time of flowering and then a battering of high winds here on the SE coast. So I can totally relate to how pleased you are. 😊

Hey Kaz 👋 I can't wait for the garlic flavours!! I didn't realise they liked poor soil! If I don't get any harvest of carrot this year I am going to do them all in square buckets with sand mixed it and I will take your idea of using the spent compost! Carrots are my total bug bear at the minute!! I have the same issue as you but with my plum tree, masses of gorgeous bloom but I think this is too early and I don't get any fruit! I was given a gardening book published back in the 70s and it has tips on fertilising trees that don't fruit so I am going to study that and see what I might learn!

@@thetinygarden_ Hey Laura🖐️. Hopefully you’ll find some tips in the gardening book and report back. I found carrots to be hit and miss in my raised beds, but put some last year in some spent compost in a large Elho black planter 😂 and was surprised by the results, as I didn’t amend the soil with anything. This year they’re back in a bed and keeping my fingers crossed, as Squash now in the planter🤞🏻.

My map for the garden is on track for the long patio raised beds, and pallet collars for the most part, I am just missing that early salad harvest due to the weather being so bad! Hey Susan 👋 it's not far it's about 15-20 min spin in the car but I had been looking after my neighbours plot so it would have saved me a job with the watering!

Oh no Jeannie 🥹 don't give up!! I have a terrible problem with them eating my carrots, I usually do a slug patrol after heavey rain 🚓 but there are so many tiny baby slugs I can't seem to find many this year. They eat the carrots but seem to leave everything else alone. They did have a go on my dahlias but I picked them off 🤦‍♀️😅 I do find planting things out that little bit bigger means they leave things alone it's only the smaller seedlings they are interested in...hence no carrots yet 😆 beer traps seem to be very good though, I haven't tried it yet half afraid Roo will tried and drink it 🤣
