Since i have two steam accounts i decided to start working on a realistic European city with stark contrasts to Kendrick. I will of course cover many of the differences between US and EU cities as far as urban planning, infrastructure etc etc. But also follow a different narrative this time around; one of success, wealth, constant demand & development.
In our first episode we start out small, building a central train station, the surrounding neighbourhood, and some basic initial infrastructure by rail and highway to get the city going.
As always suggestions are welcome :o)

Really like this new project!!! Things that you definitly need for a typical EU City: -An old/medieval city core -big parks -Trams and/or Subway -really big areas in the exact building style you used in this video -70s housing projects on the edges of the city -waterfront streets -A LOT of pedestrian walks and bycicle lanes

Well, people do go by car but yeah, buses and trams are much more used. But also there is less traffic because there isnt much skyscrapers and really tall buildings, at least not as much as in the US. But even then, traffic moves really slowly in the middle of the city

I think if you're going to add canals, it's essential that they either serve, or are designed in a way that shows they used to serve, industrial transportation within the city. Canals in the UK, the Netherlands and Belgium were essential for the transportation of goods, particularly in London and other major English port cities during the Industrial Revolution. Even if the canals in this city won't be used for industrial purposes, it would be cool if their designs showed an industrial past, even if they are being adapted for leisure use, like the canals in Liverpool today.

Historically canals were verry expensive to dig. Therefore they ended up to be the most expensive parts of town. They still are somewhat in major cities. At their time of the digging they were defenately build around or through the most expensive / most important part of the city.I don't know about the uk but in the NL they try to maintain the old bridges over canals. Which are pretty iconic for a city sometimes.

some canals in european cities are also old remnants of the old defensive inner walls of a town :) I don't know how they are called in english... But if you google the german word 'Akzisemauer' you'll get a grip of what i mean :)

Great to see your Euro project running Infra! A coupe of comments, one bad: You definitly have the touch, looking at a Euro city floor plan and converting it into Cities Skylines. One minor point, you connect all the buildings facing the street together. The fun part of some ofthese cities is the alleys in between, exploring them and suddenly discovering an oasis of quiet. Consider some paths between the buildings perhaps, or even just putting the buildings at varying distances from the road. The buildings are very convincing and the mix with open spaces looks very appealing. Courthouses, universities and city halls were common buildings of the officialdom. You are right on the highways too. I am not sure about the roadside parking. Maybe others can comment on that. I can imagine that in some cities, to make the historical centre look better, city councils do not allow for roadside parking. Parking spaces and parking garages, where visitors can be overcharged for taking the car into the center, should be considered. Now for the bad part, you put the cathedral and the central station next to one another. If I had to take a guess, you'll see this once in every 100 Euro cities with a medieval centre. I think this has to do with your statement that you found a city centre hard to pick from a map, compared to a US city. Let me (try to) explain. If you consider a city with a centre 500 years old, you would have to imagine what it would look like and what it would need. It probably has: A cathedral, or a large church A large market square and some municipal buildings next to it. (city hall, guild hall) It might have canals to move goods from and to the centre by water; but rememebr, they didn't have anything better than spades in those ages. Cities can have canals if they are on very level ground only. And it is enclosed by walls. City walls aren't just for defence, they also mark the juristiction (literally!) of the city council.Living within these walls exempts you from feudal service, for example. The safety and the city liberties made real estate within the walls of prime value, which is where the 5 storey buildings come from. There is no way to fit a 19the century station into this medieval centre unless: An autocratic regime levels part of the city and adds boulevards and a major train station. There is room to make an artifical island to put the staion on (Amsterdam Central Station) As for the fortifications, another time perhaps.. Hope this helps!
@Infrastructurist
@Infrastructurist 7 жыл бұрын
Nice observations, I've compromised by moving the cathedral back quite a bit and adding an open square in front of it! Fortifications, perhaps!
@molybdane7240
@molybdane7240 7 жыл бұрын
I mentioned fortifications because once fortifications are recognised on the map, spotting the oldest part of a city becomes easy, it's within the fortifications. You are right however that the oldest part of town is probabl;y not the functional city centre, that is probably the area around the central station. Maybe such a city has yet another centre, a financial centre like La defense or Canary warf. Maybe you can move the cathedral to one of the other islands and create a neighbourhood with really old buildings and narrow twisting streets? As for the fortifications themselves, you basically have 2 options: Medieval, big city walls, circle shaped, obivously within them is where medieval buildings can be found. Maybe these walls still stand, and the city council must have made a decisions about how they are used now. Park, museum, monument? Likewise for 17 century + fortifications, which are star shaped, to protect the city from cannons. If a city has such fortifications, the medieval walls are knocked down to use the precious room within the star fotresses. A likely decision that the city has made in the 19th century is that these star shaped fortifications and their moats are filled in and built up, however the layout of the streets still show the star shape. Consider the Dutch town of Naarden or Willemstad, the 17 century bastions can easily spotted with google maps. Now that you can recognise the shapes, look at Weesp. (Netherlands too) The east side still stands, but the west side is built over. However if you look carefully, you can still see the pinty shapes in the city streets. It's because of this that I am so icky about the station location. In the Netherlands (obviously not sure about the rest of Europe) the 19th century station is always built outside of the older (17 th century or medieval) parts of town for reasons I pointed out in my first comment. That's quite a lot of text and ccritisism and I am a little hesitant in doing this. However I learned a lot about US cities from your videos and I think I can help you along now that we're on the other side of the pond. I also know you have high standards for your project so the typing is likely worth it.

The thing is i don't plan on this cathedral to be the centerpiece of "the old spires", i have a much larger one in mind for that! But using a smaller island or perhaps even making an additional one and then wall it in and placing a monumental cathedral and the visually oldest buildings i have (a bunch of 2-3 story ones) is an awesome idea. I think my reasoning for the station was that it was relatively close to the canal i put down, so likewise as for the big hotel and the hospital, i imagine the areas used to contain some sort of industry. Coupled with the zoning rules of the city we get a mix of new and old more distinct than in other cities where WWII bombing runs are almost a requirement in order to find much modern development in the inner core.

I think that would be an art museum. It's was an art museum that was built in 1897 and during WW2 during bombing raids was slightly damaged, repairs were start a couple years after the war in 1947. Later a small section was loaned out to a bank until 1997 when it was bought out by Citi Bank and moved down the street. Just something that popped into my head. If someone has a story about how it's got its name(I couldn't think of a name) that would be great.

Infrastructurist There are actually European cities that have quite a lot of straight roads so don't curve them to much, they are usually found at weird angles more than curved. For blocks, it is typical to have smaller ones, like the ones you did (space in the back of the buildings is not so full of trees or is rather used for parking), but it's also common to have larger blocks with buildings inside the blocks, like schools, not accessible by car. Public spaces usually have a statue, planters are usually small and with a lot of benches, fountains are also surrounded with benches, but not right next to them. Trees are common on streets. Typical for a EU city is a big cathedral and lots of smaller churches throughout the city, big central park, old main core (fort or castle usually on a hill), a main square or more of them(depends on the size of the city) and trams, a lot of trams. I hope you read this and that it helps you.

Hey Infrastructurist, love the video! I am from the UK and have been to London on many occasions, but have also ventured to places like Lyon and Nantes. With regards to canals, they would represent a lot of EU cities if they weren't used too much (I know that London doesn't have very many); and with regards to the old landmark you placed, I believe that it would be too small as a UK Home Office or Foreign Office building - state buildings are much larger than that here! I would stick with a museum e.g. The Natural History Museum or The British Museum, or even something like Tate Modern. Cheers for all your amazing work! ;)

Well London had the Thames which served it's industrial areas quite nicely, Birmingham was more the hub of the UK's national canal network. Nice and central and being both highly industrial and lacking a navigable river it needed a ton of them anyway so made sense to link everything together there.

hello infrastructurist, I live in Milan and here there are some big parks outside the core of the city. I suggest you to also create a modern area in the city, not to far away from the centre. In the area there would be some glass skyscrapers (not too high skyscrapers). I suggest to have a look at the skyline of Milan or at the Frankfurt's one. The skyscrapers are not usually beside old buildings

Awesome new series Infrastructurist. I would love to see some canals, but they should be used sparingly around industrial sites, or where industry once was. Often the old industry is torn down in favour of mid-high end apartments, so if you have a modern redevelopment area. a couple of canals could work there. I also hope there might be an underground system, like the Tube in London or Paris' Metro (If you go for a Tube-style though, make sure there are some surface sections on the outskirts of the city, and possibly some cut-and-cover sections with exposed lengths hiding behind buildings)

Really enjoy your content. Subscribed. Btw, when you build a block don't be affraid to leave some empty space in the center of those old buidlings. There used to be other buildings there when these blocks were originally built, mostly for servants of front row houses and low income ppl. They were taken down after the first big wave of industrialisation was over and incomes rose dramatically.

But some ideas, you should maybe build more opera houses/theatres/small churches/... in some places, but like, also more small parks in between roads/city blocks/... where no cars are allowed but only pedestrians, most of European cities also have a zone where no cars are allowed in the "inner", busiest city... maybe some inspiration for future episodes? :)

Hey Infrastructurist, I have a suggestion of the tram and subway, In European Cities Trams like Amsterdam and Edinburgh. The terminus in the city center Begins with the tram going on the streets, As the tracks go more outside the city center, They go off the street And go on the terrain, And the terminus will be on terrain, And for subway the terminus in the city center Will be underground, And goes Overground when it's out the city center! You should look at these videos to see how to build the tramway I suggested! Please pick my suggestion! Keep up the good work!

I recommend you to have a look at Stockholm for inspiration, with lot of water and 18th century castle. The city was founded 1252 on a central island and by time expanded further out. Thanks to foreign policies, Sweden was kept out of the WWII and luckily not bombed like central Europe. By that most of the inner city is well preserved, except during 1950s and 1960s when some parts, such as Klara, went through an extensive urban renewal project with functionalism and offices as a theme.

Woah that looks cool you should do a realistic American city after this but not like the other one like an American city that isn't declining but thriving

your vids are great man. I play on xbox one. I really wish they had 2 lane roads without streetlights or sidewalks. That way making rural areas would be easier

The building can be the old town hall, before the city out grew it and move into a new town hall a few years back. The building was then renovated and opened as a mix of a national museum and historical center for the city, all the while holding the city's junior legislative Championships every year to help promote active participation among the younger demographics. 14:46.

In your last video you showed us some reactions from the video before and one of them were some airports you could take as an example to make your own airport in cities skylines. Well about that one extra tip use the runways and taxiways from Brussels airport. If you use them you use al the wind directions and I think you get more airplanes then.

You should make an embassy, a lot of large cities have them(at least in Croatia). Also tons of parks and churches.

You could maybe add some one way streets! No European metropole is complete without a system of one way streets which make getting around unnecesarily difficult

Such a rocking start for this new project (and glad to hear Kendrick will still live for now). I need to ask, where exactly do you think this city is settled in Europe - from the style so far, it can be Northwestern Europe. Maybe is the alternative capital of a EU region/county/land/department? or from an invented European nation? Excuse me if I may be insisting on this, but the geographical position may result essential from the future development. About the possible old town centre, the general position is essential for the foundation history: is a city found within the Roman Empire, or would be a town of Germanic foundation? if it is the former, the town centre would have a certain reticulate scheme, with two main perpendicular roads; the main plaza being often at the intersection, maybe with the main cathedral or the city hall (generally more the second building there). If it is a city founded by Germanic migrants, the road grid should be more like a web converging to a centre but with small squares there and here. Second issue: city walls yes or no? For the rest, my main suggestion is to place often between those houses small churches.

I also think that maybe some weapons from ww2 would be cool to have somewhere around the city maybe as a memorial to the war.

I think you need a decently sized WWII memorial somewhere central in your city for the soldiers (and maybe jews, but since your city seems quite English it would mostly be soldiers) who died in the war. As the city is thriving the history is very important to many citizens and it would be nice to have a central area for honoring the brave men who fought for their country.

Weird suggestion, but try looking for inspiration in Victoria in BC Canada. A very european-looking city. Im also currently doing a european city in CS, but more focus on the british theme. Looking forward to see what we do different or similar

For your next episode check out Zagreb in google earth! You would see the old city(upper city) across north of Sava rijeka and that the new city(city with a lots of condos) is south.Also you would see most suburbs on east and on a hill!😀

The building at 14:47 should be a government building. Maybe a legislative body. Also, you should make all the builds around it government buildings. There could be a whole complex of government functions in one area.
