Hello!! I am so doing that to some of my jades!! I had a jade plant that was a round 10" in diameter when I got it. I had it for about 10 years. It was a 5' round ball when I had it but one year it got super cold out. It used to stay outside until late Fall and then I would bring it inside and use it as a Christmas tree (super cute). When it got too big to bring inside I had no choice but to leave it outside. It survived several years even when it froze out. I lived in a condo so it was on my balcony and I would put a blanket on it and it did just fine until that one really super cold year that it killed it!! 👿😿I cried!! Now I have several that I am going to try semi-hydroponics but I think I bill attempt some Bonsai's. Thank you!!

Hello 👋. Question: What soil type did you plant the Jade Plant into?
@LetsDoBonsai Жыл бұрын
Hi Sylvia - this was a 50/50 mix of perlite and clay particles - if i was doing this again it would be 3 parts akadama/perlite/pumice, with a bit of organic thrown in from a bag of "bonsai mix" and some chopped up reptile bark.

Do Jades bloom?
@LetsDoBonsai3 жыл бұрын
Hi yes indeed you get some lovely small white flowers at different times of the year, but you may go periods without them flowering, if they do your doing a good job with them.
@pauljs754 жыл бұрын
That one looks really good given how big it got (thus needing the trim), but shouldn't the pots get turned every so many days if the sun comes from one direction so they don't get overly lopsided?

Hi Scott, do should you always prune to 2 nodes?

What kind of soil you have selected? Before it looked like normal soil, but after change only sand and stones?
@LetsDoBonsai4 жыл бұрын
The original soil was plain potting dirt, this mix was 50% perlite and 50% turface type absorabant material - we have now settled on 50% Perlite mixed with 50% potting mix, which seems to work best for me.

It appears to be thriving in real soil, why do you think it needs "bonsai soil" to make it thrive?
@LetsDoBonsai3 жыл бұрын
I can see why you would ask that, the repot would mean that it was going to be repotted into "bonsai soil" and i was hoping it would continue to do well and progress in the new airier soil, rather than the potting soil soil it had been in.
@Josef_R3 жыл бұрын
@@LetsDoBonsai Do you not know? It's been a year and a half now. My guess is you now have to water it more often since the water runs straight through and the plant gets about half a second to drink.
@LetsDoBonsai3 жыл бұрын
@@Josef_R sorry my answer was a bit cryptic as i was only referring to what i was saying in the last video, i will be doing an update on this and some other Jade trees very soon, but i am happy to report that it is in good shape although yes it does need watering more often due to the drainage your quite right, but i do give it plenty of water and feed and sometimes water in a container so it has plenty of time to take it up.
@Josef_R3 жыл бұрын
@@LetsDoBonsai Thanks. I'm trying to sift through all the nonsense that you get with people thinking there's a right way to do something, without considering why they're doing it. Potted plants seem to grow fine in real soil everywhere but in the bonsai community. There people seem to want to be doing something "mystical" or "zen" so then can call themselves purists when it does absolutely nothing particularly better than established horticulture. I guess the main benefit is to the people selling 2 quarts of gravel for $20.
@LetsDoBonsai3 жыл бұрын
@@Josef_R nailed it - for me there is no real right or wrong way apart from what the tree/plant wants for some of my trees i have reverted back to standard soil as the "bonsai soil" just didnt suit, you can find yourself getting caught up in the "rules" of Bonsai but for me they are more of a guideline and i will do what works for me and what i enjoy and how i enjoy the tree/plants and i would encourage everyone else to do the same. If its not broken then dont fixit.
