Grew mine from a cutting in my dorm room window. I thought it had died, so I threw it in the trash. I few days later, I saw roots sticking up and I pulled the cutting out, planted it, and 3 years later it's huge and in desperate need of pruning! Thanks for the vid.

Can you cut at the brown part on the stem. My jade is huge and hasn’t been trimmed in years. Has way to much weight and the branches are falling over
@EverythingPlants4 жыл бұрын
You can, but I would avoid cutting the main trunk or stem. I usually start pruning portions of drooping branches. You be surprised at how even taking a hand full of leaves off a stem will help with weight reduction. I cut the main stem once and although it did get new growth, it has been growing at a snails pace and looks ridiculous. Do your best with pruning.

As long as it is acclimated to full sun then you shouldn't have a problem. My plants are in a south window and remain green. I will water them about once every 2 weeks in the summer and about once a month in the winter. I always evaluate the soil and leaves before watering any plant.

Hello and I'm so sorry for the late reply. This video is from about two years ago and the plant would have been about 3 years old (since taking the cutting) I think because it has to establish new roots and growth the plant restarts. I have a few questions. My jade plant has lost all of its small branches over the years and now only has 2 small new branches growing out of the top. It's mostly just a tall stick at this point. I want to encourage new growth but hate to cut off the only two small branches it has, but it's also very tall (8") and will likely end up top heavy if I leave it be. Should I wait for the two branches to grow and then Prune each when they get bigger, or just shorten the plant and completely cut the top off? I had a small lower branch that recently got knocked off and still has a small bit of the node left at the trunk, maybe I can make a small cut on that to try and encourage growth there too? I realize now it's not getting enough light and severely needs repotted. It's been in poor soil for many years now. I'm going to repot and slowly move it into brighter light. Is it best to wait to prune after repotting? I hate to give up on this plant, it's quite old and was given to me by my mom.

I didnt mention: if you prune the leaves/shoots off and only leave the tips leaved.....it will substantually increase height growth. Meaning a more tree-like plant, faster. This also allows for a stronger a straighter trunk and leaders

Great video. My fault is not having a heavy enough hand with the pruning shears! I have a jade bonsai project going and so will try to be disciplined enough to keep pinching back. One thing I might ask...do you ever suggest cutting off some of the largest leaves right next to the stem? I suppose it depends on the overall look desired. I'm trying to go for as diminutive a look as I can - more like portulacaria - although with using crassula.
@EverythingPlants3 жыл бұрын
I have removed those larger leaves near the stem to reduce weight. If you really haven't pruned a jade before then start small and get comfortable with it. As a general rule for me, I will always snip off anything that grows downwards.

@EverythingPlants4 жыл бұрын
Hello and thanks. The thick stalks come from proper care and pruning. Also taking a jade outside in the summer can boost the rate of growth. Just be sure to acclimate it before you throw it in full sun and heat.

I have a jade thats just one tall stem about 5 inches, then it had a big mass of branches and fat leaves that spans out about 4 inches in all directions. It cannot stand up on its own. Is there a way I could get it to branch towards the bottom without cutting it and rerooting it? And would you suggest that I root the cutting in water first?

Have a 40 years one, planted by my late grandma, grows extremely slowly, not looking its age at all; I remember seeing them planted outside in New Zealand, they were huge, thick and profuse in flowers; I just trimmed mine mercilessly, I can see new growth but nothing over the top. Also changed its pot and soil, may it live on.

Do you have to root the pieces that you just pruned before planting ??
@EverythingPlants3 жыл бұрын
I let the ends callous over for a couple days and stick the unrooted cutting into soil. It should root fairly quick on its own. Water like you would a normal jade plant. The soil does not have to be wet for it to root. If it is consistently wet the cutting with just rot.
@Popedishsoap3 жыл бұрын
Does this also apply to Senecio Jacobsenii/kleinia petraea? As a brand new plant owner, I went in to a local plant shop asking for a crassula ovata jade plant, and was told that trailing jade was the same plant, just grown out more….. I know now that they’re completely different plants!!! The guy just wanted the sale, as the plant was a bunch of barely rooted cuttings, where half were already rotted 😥 The ones that survived are now the leggiest branches known to man…. 7+ inch long branches that are bare for the first 5…. Does anyone have any recommendations for encouraging branching (or just growth in general) on the clipped parts? I’m not worried about the cuttings, I’m just worried about where to cut & if taking cuttings in the winter will be detrimental to the plant!!

My jade is just a tall stem, but then on top is like 5 short like really short branches with big fat leaves. The thing can’t support itself it’s growing like a vine. How do I fix this. And how do I get it to support itself?
@EverythingPlants3 жыл бұрын
I had a larger Jade that did this as well....just flopped right over. I started by pruning some of the branches because of the weight and eventually it corrected itself and started to grow upright. That is kind of the rule that I use now....any branch growing downwards gets cut! Hope this helps. The only way to see what happens is to give it a try.

Very helpful to learn, thank you. I have a question though. My jade plant is years (10 or so) old, has never had too much sunlight up till now and has never been pruned, so it has many long single stems. Due to the increased sunlight it's now starting to shoot our branches everywhere, so all those stems are suddenly drooping from the weight. So how far back on the stem can I prune it? If I want to give it any structure to avoid the drooping then I'd have to cut 20cm or so from some stems. How much can it handle?
@EverythingPlants4 жыл бұрын
Hello and thanks for the question. I think as a general rule most say not to remove more then 20% of the foliage, but Jades are surprisingly forgiving. You can hack it to pieces and it will continue to grow. Cut it back as far as you think it needs to so the branches don't break. You'd be surprised though at how much those fat leaves weight. Personally I would start with cutting off a section with a few these and see how that goes. You can always cut off more, but you can't put it back if you cut too much. My general Jade pruning rule is I will cut back anything that is growing downward.

I got a big Jade plant from a friend I don’t know how old it is. Seems to be healthy and doing fine I have even seen some new lead growth on it in the past months but I have noticed a lot of roots as well at many of the leaf scars. Many of these roots are new. Is this a bad sign? Also could I propagate with those roots, cutting beneath them? I have seen a few of your videos on Jades and I haven’t noticed roots on their stems
@EverythingPlants4 жыл бұрын
My understanding of those aerial roots on stems is from lack of moisture. Either not watering enough (and in some cases too much) or maybe even root problems with the plant. Make sure it is in appropriate soil (quick draining mixture) and gets plenty of sunlight.

I have 2 Crassula Ovata plant, I am facing the growth of Crassula vertically , it's producing more leaves and becoming bushy instead of its height. And I am from India, Kolkata her e is not temparature 34 to 36 centrigade and I kept it morning sun but it's leaves and shrinked so I remove it from direct sun and place it indirect sun . Is it okay ? My crassula ovata leaves are not glossy , it's pale and fade green not glossy and shiny . What should I do for its vertical height and also it's glossy and more green leaves . It's producing more leaves and also thriving well in last 2 months. I purchased it online in Feb 2020 Please let me know ASAP. Thank you

Hello! If your plant is saggy or dropping over and you want it more vertical than you will have to do some pruning. Kind of the rule of thumb I use is that any branch growing in a downward fashion I will prune it off. This helps with the strength of the stem and will grow upwards. If you just purchased this plant then you will need to like it adjust and acclimate into full sun and heat. Place it in a shady area to start with and slowly bring it into more sunlight. Here is a video I made explaining it a bit more. Thanks for watching kzbin.info/www/bejne/mmmxi5SwpZanqrM
