Will 100% make a video about this in the near future...it was not a smooth road by any measure - lots of applying, interviewing, getting rejected, and trying again (for context, I applied to Google 5 times over the last year and was rejected every time except the 5th time).

This is sooo helpful! I’m interning in sales strategy & operations this summer for big tech and noticed a lot of my team have consulting backgrounds (I later realized that the consulting -> s&o pivot is quite common) but really enjoyed learning about google business model and your experience landing this role!

Hey John! Thanks for the comment - tbh I don’t think cover letters are useful in the application process. I may be biased but from my experience applying to many jobs + interviewing candidates, it is a low ROI activity. I did not apply to BCG or Google with cover letters - your resume is just far more important imo. Most hiring managers are reviewing hundreds of applications and are only going to skim a cover letter at best. Feel free to disagree with me of course - this is just my humble opinion!

Thanks Aaron! Appreciate you stopping by. My team is like 90% ex-MBB consultants and 10% ex-bankers, but my sample size is limited so don't take that as fact - on average though I'd say most people either come from consulting/finance or some similar S&O role at another company.

It’s pretty well documented that IB pays > Consulting, with tech comp varying depending on your role, but in my case it’s similar to consulting comp but skewed towards equity vs cash

worked on 1 tech project, but tbh consulting experience in general is enough to do the job - for S&O they care more about your ability to problem solve and manage different stakeholders

Only a few weeks in, but yes I expect WLB to be better in this position because (1) I'm no longer in client services, and (2) Google is a much slower moving company than BCG
