Years ago in another life, we had a rewire of a historic listed 1700's church house, the apprentice was asked to lift floor boards after chisling out the tongues. Big mistake it happened to be in part of the house with exposed beams downstairs. the bottom of the floorboards had been plastered and painted. Yep wasn't a good day, but not the apprentices fault.

Hard graft I’ve done this so many times lifting floorboards and getting my routes ready to run wires for sockects and lighting at the same time most of the time I do it by myself chasing the walls and setting all the metal back boxes in the wall

Do you find a lot of apprentices are unenthusiastic? They don't know how lucky they are. I'm starting level 2 as a 'mature student' and I'd do anything to get that kind of work experience.

@@AM-lf2iw I've had 8 of them since I started in the security industry 15 years ago. 1 turned out to be decent (he still works for us) 2 others had the makings of decent engineers but moved on for more money, the other 5 I wouldn't trust to run a bath. There genuinely seems to be a shortage of young people who are interested in learning a trade (even when they're the ones that applied for the job!)

@@AM-lf2iw I did an apprenticeship but I have seen other guys offer free labour. Some guys will jump at that, you dont want to work for them, but someone will like the enthusiasm and take you on. It's not impossible to get an apprenticeship as a mature student but you will probably have to force your way in a bit. The fact that you are already funding your own college tuition is a plus.

Advice to anyone who buys an older house, get it rewired and any kind of plumbing when the house is empty, it does make it easier for the tradesman and less of a headache for the customer as its customers responsibility to have all of their goods moves so the tradesman dosnt damage anything, plus dust gets everywhere no matter what type of vacume machine we use with our cutting tools.

As a plumber I'm not sure why I'm watching a rewire vid but great job nick, it's nice to see a spark who tidies up after himself, it's a rare phenomenon 🙂. I am disappointed in the plumber for not changing that little bit of lead coming off the metre though 😒. Adam seems a great apprentice and nice work making him wearing ear defenders, I wish I was forced when I was his age, I use them now but only because I have to.

There r no more TNS systems in the UK. It could look as TNS at the main income. But more likely supply cable been repaired somewhere before the house and they put piece of TNCS cable ergo the whole system become TNCS. John Ward explained this very well.

You can squeeze the oval conduit slightly and tuck it about 5mm into the backbox if you want to run cable through later. Just make sure you're filling the chase yourself so nobody's silly enough to pull it out and leave your box shy of a grommet...

Hi Nick. Bit late to this one. It struck me that with a radial it might have been easier to wire the ground floor sockets in a star configuration from a central JB. It would avoid the double drops tight in the conduit and probably even save some cable. Plus less risk of a loose connection in one socket affecting others . Any topology is acceptable on a radial. No need to use ring style configurations.

Hi Nick . As a sparky of 37 years with many of it in domestic and maintenance. I do have a few questions. We always used to start at the top of the house with the lights and work down. I dont understand why you marked sockets before removing carpets to see what way and where joists were. If using plastic conduit in the walls believe the regs say about using individual rcbo protection for rings. I love your chasing machine what a cracking tool that is. Nice to see someone taking care and doing a good job.

not all white twin was LSF, up until the 90`s i think, places like B&Q only sold white twin, that was how you knew any wiring had been done by a diyer, although white twin was also popular down south my college lecturer said. then at some point, presumably when LSF was manufactured, it all switched over to grey and white became the colour of LSF.

White PVC outer T+E was the norm Pre harmonisation. I don’t believe it was ever made with “new” conductor colours. Grey outer and “new” conductor colours appeared together when manufacturers switched to EN7671 compliant products. They even gave away mixed colour stickers to put on CU’s with larger reels of Grey T+E. The IEE was the lead for the EU on the writing of the EN. I’ve still got some of the ‘for comment” drafts somwhere in the loft.

All those cables directly under the bottom of the floor boards would be seriously sketchy in the US, someone drives a nail or screw to stop floor squeaks could start some serious issues. Ideally they would be down in the cavity passing through holes in the middle of the floor joist. We have small steel cable protector plates that get nailed over the wires on the top of each joist when this occurs in old work, stops nails or screws going into wiring. But it all depends on what their rules are where they are.

I might have misunderstood you but the way I heard it you're running quite a bit of extra cable. Take the bedroom above the lounge as an example. I guess I'd have put a 35 mm box in that inside corner, run one cable to the socket next to the window (and down to the lounge from that), one straight down to the other lounge socket and one through the wall into the next bedroom. Just some Wagos behind that socket and your're done. Daisy-chaining sockets as if they were on a ring just drives up your Zs.

ZS is not an issue in a small house like this, the lower the mcb the higher the zS can be, even when daisy chaining a radial I wouldn’t expect a zS much higher than 0.85

@@spencerwilton5831 Not if it's on a 20-amp MCB, then 2.5 is perfectly fine. There'd be a few wires, that's why I suggested a 35 or even 45 mm back box. 35 should be plenty though. Easier to figure out than criss-crossing all over the place I'd say. Zs might not be an issue but voltage drop on radials tends be get annoying pretty quickly.

Random question for the domestic sparks, how long does PVC cable last ? And when should a home owner call it a day and get a re-wire ? My house is a 1960’s build that was extended in 2003 ( loads of new sockets added to old part of the house and new consumer unit fitted so the house functions well and in my head the installation is safe ) I had a EICR done 2 years ago and it came back good apart from none earthed lights ( so I’m assuming this will be original wiring, I got around this issue by using double insulated lights and suitable switches ) all the cabling I’ve seen is PVC from what I can tell and no rubber anywhere.

Land of Oz here, with just that type of extreme temperature change that can cause deterioration. My experience is with Olex cables over 20 years old in a tiled house with non insulated flat tiles (no insulation below the tiles). Plus I had some of the Cu reacting with the insulation (green goo). The insulation check returns 2 MOhm and greater on all circuits. On very humid days, it drops to about 1.5 Mohm. So that should answer your question to some extent. Why dont you buy an insulation tester and do it yourself ? It's very easy if you understand electronics and electrical engineering.

If the consumer unit looks like that then it needs rewiring! Also look at the colours if it is red/black and not blue/brown it is pre 2004, also if they are rubber coated wires it will probably need rewiring.
