Eastway Electrical

Күн бұрын

In this video I carry out fault finding for an earth continuity issue on a ring circuit I discovered last time I was at the property.
Last time I was at the property putting in some power points for the kitchen and I discovered the issue. To resolve the issue I decide the best course of action is to check for loose connections or to split the ring into two radials on 16 Amp MCBs.
Once the earth continuity issue is resolved the customer asks me to take a look at two lights that aren't working in the kitchen. As the connections are above the ceiling, the customer has to remove the carpet and uplift the floorboards to grant access. When he does this it revealed that the the cables are floating in the void of the floor without a junction box.

You wanna say you don't know what your electrician is going to put in? You don't discuss beforehand how they're gonna route stuff and what's going to happen? Not everybody has such an "I don't care" attitude... Also, some people try and fix it themselves before calling an expert, and figure stuff like routing out as part of the debugging process.

@@timderks5960 I'm gonna tell you right now that 9.9 times out of 10 they do not give a shit about how you're gonna do it. Most of the time, all that is discussed is what they want done and where they want it done. Depending on the job or what they want done, I'll tell them what they're options are if I see there's a better way of going about it, or if there's some issue with doing it how the customer wants it. But beyond what they're gonna be using or staring at, they care about as much your average Customer cares about what a car mechanic needs to do beyond "Can you fix it?". If somebody happens to be curious and does want to know, then I'm happy to explain it to them. But it's rarely the case.

One thing I would do particularly if working along with other people in the house is fit temporary touch proof test points to exposed cables you're about to live up for testing, you can easily fit them with Wagos and prevents embarrassing accidents.

I used to live in a house owned by an electrician (who worked at a nearby power station) it had the original cotton insulated wires in it, some asbestos insulated wires and the new power points were all wired in around the new RCD with way too much wire in between. Australian wiring tends to be simpler than UK or US wiring but we had so much wire l couldn’t get radio in some areas

He told me that all the wiring was sloppily done and asked if I had done it myself, I had all the documents that the electricians give you, so I was able to show him proof an electrician had done the work. I had him check the otherthree fans, shower, kitchen etc, I went up into the loft to have a look. He was right, everything looked like a blind monkey had done it. We do tend to trust tradesmen.

@@RobertGarlinghouse OK, so a badly-tightened terminal block is more of a fire hazard than a badly-tightened junction box. Secondary safety. Fair enough. What about wagos, which auto-adjust pressure so are much less likely than a junction block to be loose? And then Americans use those little twist-cap things, and don't always put them in boxes, and have higher currents than us due to half the voltage, and have timber houses. So it could be worse :-)

I think the house owner is someone like myself. I worked as a chef and then did a law degree and have worked in welfare. I knew naff all about the standard trades such as electrician, it’s only since I’ve been forced into semi retirement through ill health that I’ve started learning bits of things. Even so I wouldn’t do anything more exciting than wiring a table lamp. I think Damian had a cowboy in and saw where things were put rather than do it himself. People like Damian and myself though good at what we do for a living are prime pickings for a fly guy. How many retired teachers etc fall for the: "I was just passing and saw a loose slate" con? The lights didn’t look good at all, personally I don’t like the idea but it also looks only half executed. Firetrap. The guy doesn't get it. The lessons are right in his face. If you don't use junction boxes, tracing and diagnostic is guess work and involves ripping things apart. Using the wrong cables, overloading MCBs having wires twisted around one another and sitting in a rat's nest are dangerous for allowing shorts overheating and fire. They guy's a maniac and needs to take a step back before he hurts someone. It's a lot neater and cleaner to use a trim around a lamp cord than it is to have it plastered into the ceiling, anyway. I guess part of the job is being tolerant of customers how are a few bricks short of a pallet

US electrician here. Is it legal to have hidden junctions in the UK? Here in the US, all wires must be junctioned in a device box that is accessible, and cannot be done in a floor space between floors unless the box is accessible, usually from a light fixture box or ceiling junction box, and less commonly in a floor box. Buried boxes and junctions are some of the most time consuming faults to find. That is a fire waiting to happen.

F**k me! Them lights with no cable support, chocblocks not even boxed or at least taped over and surface mounted plug boxes. That's got 'learn being a sparky on KZbin' written all over it. Wonder if Damien has done his boiler as well. 😮

This is what always blows my mind about construction in the UK. How hard would it be to provide a wiring diagram!?! and why are our electrical boxes so small!!!! nightmare!
@mikejose8966

I know you folks have ring mains which typically means fewer breakers, but I’ve never understood why the load center enclosures are so very small! If it’s a tight space, I could sympathize, but I’ve seen these mounted on walls that have plenty of extra space and they are always the same small size.

I am not a qualified electrician but i know my way around elecrics, an I'm not OTT either, BUT i would never do an installation like that, i couldn't sleep at night if had done that! I do have a feeling he did do it himself because i don't think even a cowboy electrician wouldn't of done that!

I am in SA. our regulations here require every earth termination with 2 or more earths need to be crimped to gather then terminated in box/switch/plug. If you lose a live, or neutral, your equipment will not work. Then requiring back checking to locate a fault. Loosing an earth, never, with great consequences can cause electric shock.
@ConstantlyDamaged
@ConstantlyDamaged 3 жыл бұрын
Oh, that lockout on the Earth Leakage switches. From what I heard, that was to stop idiots from using tape or wire to hold them in the on position. Even if held it on, and you pressed the test (or have a fault), it would still trip it and cut power (similar to how high-current commercial breakers work). This is why we can't have nice things.

Looks like a council direct labour job from 1970 with subsequent bodges by similar cowboys. Only things missing are all the 1930s and 1950s fittings and cable offcuts left under the floorboards. Almost exactly same as the filthy chaotic mess we found in my daughter's new maisonette. Took a week to sort it out and make it safe
