Slow roll, two start and ramp ups.
The first slow roll was to clear the cylinders of any liquid with the ports open.
First start is at 0:09
Ramp up at 1:39
Second start is at 2:17

I'm gonna build an off-grid place and have one of these for my generator. Then I'll start it up for maintenance reasons, way more often than I actually need to.

The slow roll is called "creepy crank" that if there is any fluid in the cylinder the engine will stop before any real damage is done then it will time out on PF or pion failure and somebody will have to check to see what happened. These units are set up to be remotely started and after about 5 minute idle in time they automatically rev up, synchronize, and close the breaker. There use to be a bunch of them in Gloucester, MA right down town on theater front. Another customer had some at the Jeppson lane substation just outside of Newport, RI. Long Island lighting also had some at East Hampton and Montauk at the end of Long Island. The newest ones would be 55 years old by now and all the switch gear relay logic controls are hopelessly out of date. This unit looks like it has a new governor. These units were originally equiped with Woodward LSG governors and for some reason they could only survive on EMD engines . Itcost less money to replace the entire control system than to get Woodward to rebuild a LSG.

Slow roll is supposed to be done with the cylinder cocks open to make sure there's no water in the cylinders.

I want to know if this is a 567D3 or a 567D3A and if it has 645 power assemblies or not.Also is the speed of the engine 835rpm or 900rpm since the 567D3A was governed at 900rpm rather than the 835rpm of the 567D2/D3
@inothome
@inothome Жыл бұрын
No idea of the exact model of engine, but it does run at 900 RPM. It HAS to run at 900 RPM to get 60Hz out of the alternator. Or if ti was a 50Hz machine it would run at 750 RPM. RPM is based on desired frequency and the number of poles.

Do we know what exact variant of the 567 this is? I can definitely hear a turbocharger, which as I recall at least up to the D2 they did not have them.
@inothome
@inothome Ай бұрын
Definitely had turbocharger and it may have been a D3, from 1962. I only have one nameplate pic from four of the V-16 EMDs, the name tag being from one of the 567s. Two gens were 567s and the other two were 645s. The nametag for the boxcar for one of them were in has a 1961 date on it.

Wait, a turbocharger? did emd 567 really have turbocharged version of it?
@inothome
@inothome 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, both turbos and superchargers were available. The turbo models have a gear drive to spin the turbo up when starting to allow for scavenging. Once the exhaust takes over and spins the turbo there is an overdrive clutch that allows turbo to spin faster than the gear drive. Interesting setup!

While EMDs are awesome, they need a train or boat for a proper home. Something a fair bit smaller would be better for the average person, I’m thinking…

Hello Sir. My name is John and I am looking to buy an old used Tug Boat that has a 567 V8 that is a rebuild with 500 hundred hours on it. It will not be used for any work load, other that to travel and cross the Atlantic Ocean, my question is what would be the gallons per hour consumed by this motor at 4.5 knots an hour, or roughly 5 miles per hour on a Tug Boat with no load outside of its own weight? Thank you John

The title say 567, so where did you get 710 and 645 from?
@TankCrusher210
@TankCrusher210 Жыл бұрын
@@inothome Sure sounds like a 710. Did someone swap a 710 turbo and gear train onto a 567-D crankcase or something? I know the 'D' turbos were notoriously troublesome. Lots of them were removed and replaced with blowers later on for ease of maintenance. The EMD crankcases themselves are largely the same from the 567-C onward. A 'C' or 'D' engine will even accept 645 power assemblies provided the fuel is turned down to maintain the engine's original power rating, so a 567 with a 710 turbo retrofitted onto it isn't inconceivable. Sounds like it's running at 900 RPM though, which is above the rev limit for a 567. That makes me more inclined to believe it's truly a genuine 710 through and through.
@inothome
@inothome Жыл бұрын
@@TankCrusher210 It definitely was a 567. We had two 567s, two 645s and two 710s. All ran at 900 and have to to put out 60Hz. Some locomotive applications were limited to 800 RPM, I think. But for 60Hz power generation these have to be 900 RPM. Maybe there's an oddball 720 RPM somewhere but that would be the exception.
@trainiax
@trainiax Жыл бұрын
@@TankCrusher210 567D3 and 645E3 turbos sound more or less the same. You would not be able to easily swap a 710 turbo because the dimensions, gear train and intended horsepower are all different. Even within a single engine series, EMD used different turbos specifically matched to the horsepower output and number of cylinders. The 567D turbos weren't that bad - they just weren't as good as the 645. The last iteration of the 567 used in the GP35 ran at 900 rpm; earlier versions ran at 800 or 835 rpm.

If we could colonize Mars and extend livable environments there, these E.M.D.s would be great for providing electricity 🔌 there to support humans but the question is,how could we ship engines this size to another planet. It would be a great solution though.
