It comes in handy if you get in a fight during a Japanese dinner party. ;)

one of the coach's at my school calls starting from the knees "the old man starting position" ...typically we start on the feet but occasionally we'll start from the knees in the fundamentals class.

At my academy, we always start standing and we have groups of 3. 2 people are training and 1 is always watching for safety. Then the group switches up. Maybe everyone gets 5 minutes to themselves or maybe it's whoever taps everyone stays in The we have positional sparring. Eg Kesa, guard, mount. Where the idea is escape if you're on bottom or submit/pass if you're on top

In my gym (an sbg mma gym ) one person starts on their back and the other on the feet and they we swap

This is actually good advice. I need to do this way more often. I’m only 145-150 lbs so I’m usually the nail. I need to ask if I can start in other positions since I don’t get there much.

I'm thinking it is like guard passing on the knee. I got much more from rolling when i stopped thinking it as a simulation of standing. I catch the leg to start passing or trying to get my hooks in to sweep or transition to single x guard. And by this mindset i'm practicing guard retention from time zero. And I'm not stalling time with on knee wrestling.

A scrabble during self defense when both hit the ground ..... butterfly sweep is great transition to side control, 90 degree angle on opponent, with their arms extended, very hard to counter attack from bottom side. And,...a 90 degree angle on oppontent. Lots of damage is done from top guard in street fights.

We do a lot of segmented training, sometimes we do takedown drilling where you both are going for takedowns and if one gets a takedown you stand back up, we also start one person from a bad spot and work to get up to standing, we start from knees at times, we put gloves on and go all out, or just all out without strikes. Depends on the nights focus. As the instructor there are times I just lay down and tell them to start from where ever they want.

Thank you! I’ve always had anxiety about this. I do have a hard time getting past this - grip breaking. I like the concept of positional drilling.

Suwari-waza is where traditional forms of jujutsu starts its curriculum. Also in Japan seiza is still a common way of sitting, so while it is irrelevant to none Japanese context it is still relevant to jiu-jitsu as a cultural expression and not exclusively as a method of fighting & self-defense.

Yeah that's why I always start from an open guard if the other guy is on his knees. Never knee wrestle.

Starting on the knees reduces potential injury in the long run.of course all fights/matched start standing. One person usually sits but I guess no grapplers ever kneeled during transitions ever...

And therein lies perhaps the biggest problem with training BJJ. Where I have trained, everyone starts from knees, because of crowded mat. It's total bs and creates bad habits, way to much fighting for top position, guard pulling. It's so stupid...

Takedowns can be injury prone for some ,thats why we usually start from the knees.

I think starting on the knees is more about the fact that often times there's just not enough space for everyone it's efficient because it prevents everyone from just wait for the majority of time.

A good saying is “roll with a goal”. It’s not a saying, I just made it up, but it makes sense to have a goal in sight to focus on for yourself and your partner.

Your videos are always great. Not this one. For the smaller, slower, older person, who gets smashed as soon as the roll starts, playing off that it's not a big deal is why so many people quit BJJ.

If you don't have ego problem getting taped really isn't a big deal and no that's not why most people quit at all
