As a whitebelt my favourites are a cheeky armdrag into a RNC or a surf pass. Our coach has shown us a very fun armbar, like a baby-flying-armbar, from the grips you're showing at 6:00. Fun to do, rarely effective

Great stuff as usual 🤙. The last armbar, i call the Rickson armbar. The amount of people i've watched ,especially in the 90's that walked straight into that trap, is staggering!. Keep up the good work Coach. Ur helping the silent majority more than you know and it's MUCH appreciated. I purchased a couple of your Series on your website to give back and was VERY pleasantly surprised to find excellent quality instruction for people who may want to have a deeper understanding or added effectiveness at very reasonable prices. Looking forward to getting some more as they definitely make Trap's & Pathway's to the Submission dotted around your game and once your opponent is on one of these Pathway's or Trap's, there's NO going back for them! 😑😁 ....

@glady97844 жыл бұрын
IMO that's usually the better idea. It's good to change things, sometimes you start standing, sometimes sitting. Later you both start from the top to practice wrestling etc. Variety = skill

Nice🤙 it's great when you get 2 heavy weight bulls that might as well be on their feet because they are driving one another across the mat on their knees taking out anyone or anything in their way haha. Love to start on the feet but as you said logistically it's not always the safest. Great topic

2:45 how do you prevent your opponent from getting a guillotine choke? I run in to this problem all the time with my brother, every oppertunity he gets he grabs my neck (guillotine) and from there it's rolling rolling but my fate is sealed.

Why start from the knees in general? I never understood this, since it's just not a natural starting position. Neither in competition nor in self defense.
@David-bs3rq5 жыл бұрын
It's definitely better to start from standing when space permits, but a lot more ground is covered when starting from standing, and with a full class, this is not always feasible. And since jui jitsu is mostly a ground game, take-downs are often skipped. Another reason for starting from the knees might be because this is where a lot of injuries occur, so for beginners it is better to learn the ground portion of grappling before attempting take-downs/take-down defense when rolling.
@blammblamm5 жыл бұрын
@@David-bs3rq I get that part. Would make more sense to start in guard, side control or any other position you may end up after a takedown in my opinion. I could imagine a start from the knees would enable people to do a modified form of double leg takedown, but I'm not sure.

I only start on the feet. We don't have a hugely popular gym, there's about 8 of us on rare occasions. Usually it's 4 of us, so starting on the feet is only logical. Especially since we're an mma gym.
@juntjoonunya92165 жыл бұрын
If not starting standing the only remotely realistic position before you engage in a jj exchange is one or both men on their butts. I always offer them the choice otherwise take butt and work for top position if that's what I want to do

to start in knees is saffer, is the sames principles has to start in standing but less dangerous is educacional how to put the other one down , when you says is a losing time because you do not put anyone down is not truth a lot of jujitsu competitions start up and no one can put the other one down so is a waste of time to start standing ? if you can not put your adversaire down how can you use all yours jujitsu thecniques . is what happen in ufc if the fighter do not go down your jujitsu is not usefull you have to think in a fighting way ,you pull guard ok if you do not close the guard i will try stand up breaking the grips and now how you to put me down again you have to get up a try to put me down again . in competition a lot of people just sit in there butt ,but in the street this is not the right thing to do . imagine you have trouble with some one and you sit in your butt and say start to figth come here so he will say stand up and now when you try to stand up he can strike you or you can stay in the ground and ask for a beer.

People say all the time that starting from the knee is a waste of time. Obviously they forgot that judo and Jiu-Jitsu are Japanese martial art systems and Japanese people eat and socialize sitting on the floor, many of the altercations in feudal Japan started from the knee position and no standing....

I can't get my head around the whole "sitting and pulling guard" that might be useful on the competition but in real life you'd get your face stomped. Even in the UFC you would but ground kicks are illegal. And Bjj gym that's doesn't have an instructor with at least brown belt in Judo is useless to me. Judo take down and continue bjj on the ground. Not sit on your ass and wait for opponent to walk up to you.
