On the acer, use your thumb nail to scrape the bark/stem at the bottom of the bush.If you see green then its still has a chance.if its brown then bin it, trim the dead wood back and take out of the tub put it in some water for a few days ,then repott.

Hi wrighty the pom pom bush you can buy metal frames for it to grow around in different shapes can be trimmed to your preference concerning the acer they like acidic soil and are vulnerable to the cold so you want see leaves till it warms up mine only justed started showing leaves it needs a bigger pot or planting out with some ericaceous composte and the ferns will die back in winter to small stumps they preffer shaded damp areas hope this helps (can you tell i manage a garden center 🤣🤣)

Hi Terry . I love this time of year , when everything is coming back to life . I know what you mean about the blossom trees , though . Our neighbour has a beautiful cherry blossom tree and I can guarantee you that come mid-April we`ll have a few days of Easterly winds which dumps the "pink snow" all over my garden - then about 3 weeks later (happening now) the wind turns to the South just in time to top up the "snow" from the hawthorns at the back of us 😊 Another job for the weekend ! - Speaking of which , you`ve got a job on with that blanket weed . Thats one disadvantage of the covers - you cant see it creeping up on you . Ive found over the years - you have to try and get it early , before it takes hold . I normally treat with a half dose in Feb - although it was later , this year . Good luck with it , and take care 👍

Hi mate, Algae is just one of the curses of pond keeping lol. I've not had to treat my pond for 2 or 3 years for algae, but it's back with a vengeance this year 😲😲not to worry, I'll get it sorted 👍👍The blossom is still landing in my pond here😡😡that's just another pain in the backside lol. Hi Terry I would put a bit of trellis behind the Pom Pom Bush and encourage the branches through trellis and let it grow to the hight you want it to grow then in the autumn trim it back at the top of the branches to encourage new growth next spring. Your Acer I think needs repotting I don't think it's dead, try repotting and giving it some feed and see how it goes. I hope this helps. Joss

I've noticed I always get blanket weed coming out of winter in to spring until the pond temp is above 10 after that I don't get it but I don't heat my pond. High buddy love your video as usual. I’m like you green fingers I haven’t got, but my mrs middle name is Perennial 😀 so here’s some advice. Pom-poms is a bush so take out the canes and cut to shape trim annually. Average will be fine best in ground but defo needs to be in bigger pot will be root bound in that tiny one, ferns need feeding with some feed and will revive, hope this helps. Fish look great.

Hi Terry...just a thought. I used blanket answer on the pond and was never happy that I had to switch the filters off for 24 hours for it to be effective then the pond was murky with the treatment for a couple of days. About 5 years ago I discovered Viresco Koi which is totally natural and consists of billions of microbes which get rid of nitrate and phosphates thereby starving the algae of its food source. It also makes for a healthier pond as it keeps the bad bacteria at bay. Its most effective over 10C so I use it in early April and have never had an issue with algae since. The fish are always in top condition also. Most in the reviews find it works well and those who don't mustn't be preparing it properly...it needs to go in a bucket of pond water and aerated during the day and put in the pond just before dark. Its one of those little gems that you come across every now and then.
@Wrighty
@Wrighty 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Keith, and thank you for the info mate, very much appreciated. I think my problem with it would be the plants in the pond and the bog filter I've just built. Clearing the nitrates in the pond would also kill them off. But thanks again for the info mate, I think it's always good to know what products are on the market. Take care and stay safe, Terry.

Good to see your season kicking off. You sound a bit more out of breath in this one. I hope that you are taking care! Put the maple in the ground. With the leaves gone, fight the urge to over water. Water will rot the roots. A garden tip for you is to make use of your filter backwash as it makes for a superb garden fertilizer.

Terry not knowing the variety of Acer? Most (not all) prefer partial shade, & especially a small tree needs protection from strong winds & scorching sun! & as mentioned check under the bark with a knife or strong fingernail, if it’s green keep it, again many Acer varieties, have “die back on twigs & small branches” prune back to healthy branches, but leave a stub of branch above a live leaf node! To allow a limited die back. Don’t let it dry out, but don’t stand it in a pot & tray that holds water, they generally hate having wet feet? Hoping this helps.

Get some good quality compost, and a bigger pot, put the tree in the new pot with the compost, and cover the soil with a thick layer of wood chips. And I advise you to cover the soil from all the other garden plants with wood chips as well. Whether they are planted in a pot or not. You will soon notice that the leafs from your plants will look much darker green, and they will be much healthier and resilient against pests and diseases.

@@Wrighty Get some wood chips and cover the soil from all your plants in the garden with the wood chips. You will be very pleased with the results. It will also protect the plants from water evaporation, but most importantly it is a perfect habitat for micro organisms. And they will help to keep your plants and the soil healthy in many different ways. Really, it is a night and day difference. You will see the most difference after a full season. The plants will start to develop a very dark green color, instead of the pale yellowish color.

@Wrighty
@Wrighty 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jerry, and thank you. There are several reasons I cover my pond in the winter. The main one is because I heat my pond, and keep it at 16c throughout the winter. If I didn't heat it, I would still have the covers on, because number 1, it stops big overnight temperature swings, which are not good for koi, and number 2, as you say, it keeps herons out. We do suffer from herons in this area. Hope this helps mate, Take care, Terry.

Hi Terry. Two ways to train the Pom Pom in my opinion.. First way, train it to grown up, rather than spread out. Create a taller frame for it to climb up, and snip off the longer stems. It will become thicker and bushier, but you can keep it taller and less wide that way. The second way is the opposite to the first to be honest.. if you snip the top stems back, it'll grow wider, as much as 8ft. Each time you snip off a stem, it'll produce 2 new stems. So, if you snip it off quite far in (not too far) 2 new stems will grow, and you can snip them to produce more stems. By doing that, you can end up with a nice bushy plant. It should be done after flowering, but not exclusively. You can also cut back random stems to ground level each year. Be warned though, if you don't control its growth, it can become a pain in the arse! lol

Hi mate, and thank you. I do try to get as much algae out as possible before a treatment, or you just end up with it dead in your filters. I think I got it sorted now 🤞🤞🤞 thanks for the info on the bush mate, much appreciated, take care, Terry.

I've got one of those Jet Sprays too Terry. Great bit of kit. You're right a lot of the deterrent is the noise it makes. I'd hold on to the Acer for a while. It might pick up and if it doesn't you haven't lost anything.

Hi Terry I was just wondering if you had ever thought of installing one of those upside down aquarium viewing towers on your pond?
@Wrighty
@Wrighty 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ray, I have thought about it mate, but the trouble is, most of my koi are getting quite big, so it would have to be quite a big tank for them to get in. Another thing is, my pond has a liner, and to put a lot of weight on that would be quite risky, so I thought better of it lol. Take care mate, Terry.
@raysharman7162
@raysharman7162 2 жыл бұрын
@@Wrighty Thanks for the reply Tel. I know what you mean re the liner, my pond is the same and I have the same concerns. That said, I'm not sure if you've seen, but Andy at Koipondlifestyle has recently installed a new one, and the rigid frame that he has designed looks very much like it sends all of the weight vertically onto the horizontal part of the surrounding wall. Anyway, just a thought and as always, good to talk mate.

Hey Terry. I hope you are well 😄 I’ve used Clover leaf and it killed off half my blanket weed. What was a good start. Unlike you, I left my RDF on what was probably not the best idea. How long do you turn yours off for in total. I know you put it back on in this vid. But do you turn it off again, say then next day? Keep the vids coming. I really enjoyed your pottering and DIY 😄👍🏼 Paul

@Wrighty 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, and thank you. I turned my RDF and filters off for about 1 1/2 hours, just to give some of it a chance to settle. I can't have them off for long, as my shower and moving bed need the water flow to keep the bacteria going. By the time I've left it overnight, the RDF has taken most of the Cloverleaf out lol. Thanks again mate, really appreciated, take care, Terry.

Hi Terry, Great to see the covers off! On another topic, you might remember that I mentioned I'm going to be replacing my 3 barrel midi system with a drum filter this year. After much consideration I've decided that I don't have your ability to build the one from the plans, I'm very much monkey see monkey do. Therefore, I was wondering if you'd consider maybe in your next vid putting up a very basic picture of an idiots guide to your set up. Just showing which pumps feed which parts and how it's all interconnected e.g. Baki, Fines filter, Drum filter, Skimmer etc etc. Feel free to tell me to sod off Tel as I know you've covered this extensively over the years with all the vids...... Best as always
