People say it on every episode, but it's probably my turn: These videos are more motivating than maybe anything else on youtube to just get the hell out of the house and shoot. It's so easy to stay locked into watching videos or reddit, and finding the discipline to consistently take photos is not easy. Watching these masters of the craft do their stuff and learning more about how they tick makes me want to be there in the street shooting again. Thanks dude!

There's quite a range in personalities and approaches, and it's well presented from what I've watched on this series so far. And then there's the undercurrent throughout which really resonates for me. I should head to a big town a few times to do some street, and see if I can take some things I experience/confidence to being able to do it more locally and smaller :)

I'm curious to know what Jorge meant by color film chemistry's supporting environment not being around and perhaps no longer around in 10 years. Why is that? What's the difference with b/w chemistry that it might make it be around for longer? If anyone has any insights they're welcome!
@lensaero
@lensaero Жыл бұрын
Colour chemistry will only disappear when the big features stop shooting film. It might evolve into more environmentally friendly solutions but it’s here until Hollywood stops using it.
@seanc5718
@seanc5718 Жыл бұрын
@@lensaero you're right regarding ecn2, but Hollywood isn't using c41.
@lensaero
@lensaero Жыл бұрын
@@seanc5718 If they're making film they'll be making chemicals. Kodak just took on 60 more people for the super 8 line alone. They can't keep up with demand, look at any of the film resellers in the US or Europe and you'll see 'awaiting stock' on a regular basis. It's just business, if the demand is there somebody will supply what's needed.

Can you only be a street photographer in NYC? Many folk here have said they moved to NYC to do street photography. What’s street like in other places?
@goopcat
@goopcat Жыл бұрын
I know the above is a dumb comment. But I think it’s important that other people love documenting where they live and don’t think the only way to be successful is to move to NYC. This series is great and interviews people in the NYC scene.
@williamlasl
@williamlasl Жыл бұрын
Definitely not. Some of the older videos feature Memphis, New Orleans, etc. Check out the works of Fred Herzog who mostly photographed his native Vancouver. Or Vivian Meier who photographed in Chicago. Cartier-Bresson who is mentioned has a lot of famous street photos he took in all parts of the world across many decades. New York offers more opportunities because it has such busy streets. But it also probably has more street photographers per square mile than anywhere else.

I see photographers fall into what I consider a trap of "meaning making" when analyzing their photos. As in 13:54 he's describing all this meaning he made out of his snapshot, their steps and even the little sign on the crosswalk, when it actually doesn't read that way. That particular photo reads as just a mix of people walking on the street. I notice other photographers doing that in this series, picking motifs out of their photos that are present upon inspection but not part of how the photo is really perceived. One theory of mine is that the elements that play into the perception of a photo, beyond the light and subject, are more tied to the divisions of the frame so to speak, proportions and symmetry and what not. Just to offer an alternative to the conversation instead of just ripping on it.

I don’t think anyone featured on walkie-talkies make a living at street photography. In fact about three episodes back there was Q&A where all the photographers said they do something else for money.

"whats the point if you don't print" I don't have the space for a MF darkroom bruh. But I got room on my desk for an 8200i and I decide what my jpgs look like, so like, chill, ok?

It takes a small bathroom, $50 travel enlarger or similar, and a couple trays. I set up my darkroom for about $85 not including chems. So rewarding though. It’s one of those things that is hard to ignore once you’ve seen it.
