You treated the subject gracefully although you didn't have to address this ❤ Asking someone when they are having babies is such an insensitive thing to ask someone. I once saw a woman on the bus ask another why she won't have kids already, given that she is so young, and the second woman answered "because I only wanted to have kids with the love of my life and he died last year". They way the first woman's face just DROPPED when she heard that. You never know what's behind the scenes and what struggles people have.

This healed something in me - as a mom of 1 and feeling content with just having 1, it was so refreshing to hear you say that you and Jeremy both enjoyed being only children. My biggest fear is my son feeling lonely or resenting us for not giving him a sibling (I mentally can't go through another pregnancy/newborn stage again) so thank you for sharing that ❤

Hi Lauren! I think it's SO amazing that you are being so open about your family planning and the role of fertility in that. I think it's becoming more commonplace, but I think a lot of people our age think about it as a later problem or no one thinks it will happen to them. Obviously, the fur meatballs would be amazing big brothers. I actually work in fertility - I'm not a doctor and obviously, even if I were, this is my two cents, not a replacement for speaking with YOUR doctor. This is the info that I would tell a girlfriend in your situation. Bare with me, I'm a nerd for this stuff so this is long - lol. The proportion of your eggs that are viable/unviable is 50/50 at 38 and then the proportion of viable eggs decreases from there - so, it's not just the number of eggs but the quality of those eggs that should be a consideration when thinking about freezing and that is directly related to age. They'll probably show you a graph on this. It's humbling. If you do opt for freezing, I would actually recommend freezing EMBRYOs over eggs - embryos are much more stable coming out of thawing than eggs. It may not be worth checking Jeremy out until you're ready, if you're not freezing embryos. Since sperm takes about 2 months to make, you could test him now and then they could look COMPLETELY different when you're ready - I have had patients this happened to. No HARM in testing him now, obviously, but you can't bank on it being the same in 5 years. Ultimately, he'll have to do the same process twice and you'll pay for it twice. If you're not ready to do the WHOLE thing right now, that is totally fair. You could definitely conceive naturally when you're ready. If you don't, you actually have more treatment options before going to egg retrieval/ivf that you don't have when you are doing it for fertility preservation. BUT, if you do end up going through IVF anyway your chances are better now than in 5 years for more viable embryos. It's great that you have people to talk to about egg retrievals - I have seen lots. The people who do the best are always the ones prepared for what they're going in for so soak up all the info you can if you end up going that route, I hope your appointment goes great and you get lots of information.

I’m 29 and just went through IVF. We were trying for over 3 years, did countless tests and still everything came back normal. We are one of the lovely unexplained cases. The first part of the process involved stim meds to try to get as many eggs as possible at retrieval and you get so heavy and can literally feel your ovaries haha but egg retrieval itself is an easy process. Next is waiting to see how many make it to embryos and then the next phase is getting ready to transfer an embryo. All of that was a 2 month process for me and happy to report that I am now pregnant!! So it worked for me. Wishing you all of the best and thanks for discussing this topic

I’m currently in my TTC journey. I was someone who was on birth control from 15-29. And at 30 was diagnosed with PCOS. I went undiagnosed due to the birth control hiding the symptoms. I am now taking medication to help me ovulate because my body doesn’t do it on its own consistently (cycles anywhere from 44 to 60+days long). So I strongly encourage fertility testing earlier if you know want kids. Because now that I’m 31 and still not pregnant after 18 months of trying, I look back and wish I had started trying sooner or figuring this out sooner. My husband is getting his sperms tested and we get the results next week. I wish you luck and don’t pray struggling to conceive on anyone 💕

I completely understand the "I can't believe there are two of them"! In 2020, we adopted a husky mix from a family on my husband's route (he's a mail carrier). My girlfriend convinced a few other friends of hers to adopt the other 2 girls from the litter (she was my husband's floater, so another carrier). When her sister had to move into an apartment (divorce 😢), we took in our dog's sister. She's a tripod, and so freaking adorable, but I look at the two girls and can barely remember when we only had our Kira. Now, we have a Nyla and Kira (and Red, but he's 2 years old than the girls), and I just can't believe how blessed I am!

My mom had me at 34 (I'm an only child). I'm the best of friends with her (even though I'm a teenager rn so it's not typical to be besties with ur mom) and getting older with her is very exciting. It's never too late to have kids (age doesn't necessarily affect having kids, depending on how you want to have kids - IVF, adoption or natural + when) so don't rush! My mom didn't want kids until 33 and I ended up coming along. Not a mom yet (hope not!) but other moms (even my own mom) tell me to make sure I'm ready and then I can plan depending on my situation/fertility. Freezing the eggs is probably going to ease your worries! Best of luck with family planning (I'm a huge fan, I grew up watching you!)

We were going to take our time with getting pregnant like you guys, but it’s after this test that we realised that it was now or never.

We have decided to move forward with an egg retrieval with the goal of freezing our embryos. I would HIGHLY recommend doing it sooner than later. This is refreshing! 💜 My husband and I got married last October and I'll be 30 this November. We aren't sure if we even want kids at all...but if we do, it'll be at LEAST 2-3 years down the road. I've been anxious about having kids after 30 and being an "old mom" and even trying to get pregnant after the prime 20s. I've only ever been on birth control for a year and a half and it was back when I was 24. Super easy, regular periods always. Curious about the fertility testing, but also anxious it'll make me feel rushed or something. Idk where I was going with this comment really 😂 I guess just thanks for giving a voice to us 30+ potential mommas! 🥰

Fellow 31-year-old who got married this year: don't let the LA doctors pressure you to do anything you're not ready for! It's still your body. You could always ask for when is the latest they'd recommend to freeze eggs, especially if you and Jeremy are both looking healthy! I have PCOS so I'm actively working on improving my health, but it's not only about fertility for me. I don't want to do anything invasive until it becomes absolutely necessary. Also, my mom had me at 37 the old fashioned way, and she gave birth 3 more times after that! With you only wanting (maybe) one kid, you have PLENTY of time. Don't rush into anything, dog mama ❤

Got married at 31 and when I first asked my OB/GYN then about testing they said don’t worry until you are 35 and you need to come off birth control to get accurate hormone testing anyway. I was also tight with my birth control and so nervous to go off of it due to acne and short periods. Decided to go off of it earlier and so glad I did because then I found out I have PCOS (which made so much sense upon reflection of my history). I don’t think it hurts to test his sperm now if you don’t mind paying for it to have a baseline to compare it to down the road. My husband had a low sperm count. Anyway now I am 34 and after about 18 months of TTC right before starting fertility treatments we got our first positive pregnancy test and I am now 15 weeks. Egg retrieval and fertility treatments are not for the faint of heart. Hoping it all goes well for you! 💕 P.S. Also an only child but I wouldn’t mind more than one. But either way will be happy with just one.

Hi Lauren! This title like one commentator has said, it’s crazy to think that you’re going to start your future family!!! ❤ ahhhh cannot wait! But, I was watching Adrienne Baillon-Houghton’s fertile journey and on her channel she’s explained her experience. I highly recommend watching her series called Faith and Familia on her channel. But, as far as I understood, when talked about you talking to your doctor, it’s just an ultrasound where your doctor makes sure that your uterus and follicles are healthy to ensure that an egg can attach healthily to your uterus. As well as I believe check your fallopian tubes to see if both or one of them are blocked or has a cyst that you don’t know about and get them removed. Then, I believe that’s when you guys will talk more about IVF and other forms. And to answer Jeremy’s question about finding out the gender of the eggs, you do get to know the genders because they go off to get tested on which is healthy and fertilized and the gender. I hope this information semi helps you girl! Again, please go watch Adrienne Baillon-Houghton’s journey on her fertility. Good luck to Jeremy and you! ❤

I started looking into egg freezing around age 32 and found out I have a very low egg count, and will probably never conceive naturally. After a miscarriage last year and no positive pregnancy test for 12 months, we decided to follow through with our IVF consultation. The consultation was a few days ago, and the news wasn’t good. Basically we need to do IVF with donor eggs and we live in a state that doesn’t require our insurance to cover the procedure so it’s 100% out-of-pocket. The cost is 25,000 to 40,000 with an 80% chance of starting a family. I’m 35 and probably don’t have that many years left. Money is tight and with a tight timeline the future looks bleak

Yeah, our jaws dropped as well 😅 It’s disappointing enough coming to the conclusion that I may never have biological children, but even considering adoption it’s around the same price! My husband and I had to do IVF. I love that you're starting early because literally anything can happen and fertility health can change or whatever. For me, we found my uterus was a heart shape versus an upside down pear shape so I had to get that fixed also, and it takes a minimum of 3 months for your own health habits to affect your fertility - so for months before our procedure I was on certain vitamins and supplements, and same for my husband. I think one of the hardest bits of the egg retrieval side was the shots. You end up getting bloated and uncomfortable and nothing but stretchy pants or dresses fit me towards the last couple days.

I did IUI to have my baby in February and because of that I had to my blood drawn to check my genetic markers to see if I was a carrier of any genetic diseases and to check other baby making labs lol, an xray of my uterus, and an ultrasound of my ovaries. My gynecologist referred me to a fertility specialist who was super knowledgeable and nice. All that to say it took a few months to check everything but it wasn’t too unpleasant. Good luck you both!

My husband and I were trying to conceive for a full year before getting pregnant the first time( I was 25!) and I unfortunately it ended in miscarriage. We had our rainbow baby about one year ago, he is beautiful and healthy! I’m almost 29 now so I just wanted to say it may take longer than you might think to get pregnant and get to delivery ❤ good luck on your journey!

Whatever your fertility results are, don’t take it personally. I wish someone had said that to me! My situation is different having severe PCOS, but I think it’s good advice in general. We have little control over what our bodies are or aren’t doing on that deep chemical level and it’s not a reflection of your value. ❤❤❤

Recent egg donor and daughter of an obgyn here: I’m 22 and have been on birth control for 5 years. I was completely fine going off of birth control (including my skin), except for the period after the egg retrieval surgery. That period was more painful than usual for me and came with a heavier flow most likely because my body had prepared more eggs than usual, but I was able to start my birth control back up at the start of that period, which helped it end faster. But obviously, every body is different! Also, just a heads up, the ultrasound will most likely be an internal ultrasound, which feels a bit weird. Hope this helps and best of luck!

Similar to you, we weren’t ready to start a family immediately after getting married. I think after 4ish years something just clicked and we were like heyy why not start legit trying. Fast forward to 3 years later (we’re both in our early 30s) and no babies yet 😅 I honestly wish we did fertility testing earlier to avoid the unnecessary stress of not knowing if xyz would be a problem. I think after a while of getting the family comments constantly about having kids they eventually left us alone about it lol I SO appreciate you normalizing waiting but also getting testing just to know and be able to plan for the future ❤

So as someone going through her own fertility journey right now, I just had a consultation with my gyno last week and they had me do some tests with bloodwork and my husband will do some testing also through the same office, so you may not have to find a different doctor for Jeremy! My husband actually went to his GP to ask and they said male fertility is often just through the woman’s gyno now

I did ivf and found out after 2 miscarriages that 1 of mine and hubbs genes are expressed the same way so i would need immuno suppression as my body sees the embryo as foreign. I still have yet to decide if i want to do that, but the big take away is not just if you're both fertile but also fertility genetic testing ❤ it can save a lot of heartbreak in the long run

Just a heads up, this is just my experience, but when I saw my GYN and booked an appt to directly discuss fertility, it was only a pre-conception counseling appt where we talked about my period history, medications I’m on, potential risks, etc. My GYN was not willing to do any referral to fertility specialist until 1 full year of failed TTC. It’s important have those conversations and your experience may differ, but just be prepared that you may get pushback on fertility testing this early. You may also need to book with fertility specialists independently and pay out of pocket while not actively TTC. Best of luck!

I think your early thirties is a good time to start looking at how your fertility is. If I could talk to my early thirties self I would have done this, but I didn’t even think about it because I wasn’t in a relationship, but regardless your relationship status. You should check!- now I’m older and my husband and I are planning for IVF and it sucks for lack of better words. It’s just a process that is so difficult to go through and prepping for it is hard too. If you know you want children and you have the money for it. FREEZE YOUR EGGS. I feel it’s a good investment for the future. I wish I looked into it when I could. I know it’s expensive but it’s something to consider, especially now if you’re younger and you know for sure you and your partner want children but want to wait. Your fertility can change so fast!

I don’t know how/if your insurance would cover it, but I’d see if you can ask about imaging/dye contrast on your uterus to check shape and any potential obstruction. It took us 6 years and 2 miscarriages to convince someone that something was wrong other than my weight and it turns out I had a septum in my uterus that was denying blood flow and preventing our babies from growing and I had to get it fixed.

I want your opinion on Credence by Penelope Douglas! I’m an only child mama and I go back and forth. I wish my son had a sibling to have that built in friend and support system for when we’re gone but I also am grateful that we never had to split our time with him and another. We’ve been at every event, program, or game he’s ever had. We also enjoyed being able to focus all our resources and finances on only him. He graduated high school 2 months ago and I like to think he’s pretty happy!
