I have never been more motivated to paint an egg. Genuinely. People always say „draw from life“ and „do studies“, but how?! Thank you for this, this helps me to get an idea how to THINK and LOOK while drawing/painting. And it‘s so relaxing to watch, too. No anxiety about doing it quickly, or perfect, no pressure to improve. Just calmness and an open mind for learning. Invaluable, really.

THIS by far and by no means I am exaggerating, the best Digital Coloring exercise, tutorial and method I have come across. I was getting no where in my digital color application with all these 1000s of brushes I downloaded. The limitation of only 3 brushes really pushed me to actually gain INSIGHT into color interaction and play with the medium and light which I hitherto lacked. The edges were a bit challenging after the use of Mixer brush. Kudos 10/10 😄😄👍👍

This was so good. The explanation is great and seeing you doing it real time makes it feel more attainable. Also when you mentioned that the perspective isn't right, that the egg shape wasn't quite there and the shadow being hard. All of that were things I was seeing and this realisation that it's not a big deal is so refreshing. Always had this idea that people like you just did perfect paintings so every mistake I made I saw it as a big red flag. This video was therapeutic.

I'm so very glad you found this helpful Daniela! Yup, perfectionism is a big art killer, as well as the idea that you have to get everything right on the first try. This is the most useful painting study I have found by far! And exactly what I was looking for. I used to draw by copying and color-picking. Then I gave up, and now, 10 years later I’m back to digital painting. Though it seems that I’m no good at all. So I wanted to really learn to paint by simplifying and getting the overall impression, colors and light. Because I only know how to copy details. Whenever I tried to draw or paint from a poor quality of blurry reference, I failed, because I didn’t know how to handle it. So thank you for giving the guidance. This video made it all so clear for me. I never knew it could be so easy to paint a quick sketch of such an egg. I went on trying and practicing with other things. Yeah, it’s challenging, but it’s much easier than I thought it would be.

Honestly, I was hoping you would do the banana so I was like "Nooooooo," when you choose the egg- BUT... this is the most intriguing egg painting demo ever! I've never been to art school so I'm learning by watching mostly KZbin videos and reading books. I've been looking for advanced in- depth studies on lighting and color and I've found it! KUDOS to you and thank you! It all makes sense now. Your diagram on lighting is fantastic! I now understand terms like ambient occlusion and specular lighting and where they are located on an object. I've seen these terms with my 3D software programs but didn't know exactly what they meant. I just focused on what I thought looked good when lighting a character. Now I know and will apply this to not only my digital work but also my works on canvas and paper.

Here I am, thinking. How do I apply this to traditional mediums. Coloring pencils are a super slow medium, but drawing in a small size should cut down the time spent significantly. Watercolors are a bit trickier as I can't really go back and forth, but a smaller monochrome (think in terms of sort of a thumbnail) as a start. To map in the lights and shadows. Then identifying the colors I can see in the photo, planning out a layered approach with those colors, and bringing it all together in a final piece. The theory will be the same, but the approach needing to be done differently. Depending upon what medium one picks. I do got access to digital painting tools, and also have a love hate relationship with adobes subscription model. lol. But currently in a phase in my life where traditional is a ton more appealing. Great tutorial by the way, felt like I learnt some things by merely watching it.

Any painting media other than watercolor will work great for doing this in non digital media.
@LightingMentor2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I think I should make a video just about traditional mediums. The concepts of light and color will apply to any art your create, but the processes will vary wildly. Watercolor cannot use this method, but oil paints and acrylics can. The concepts of color and light apply to all mediums, but the processes to mimic that light in different mediums varies wildly. I have not taken the time to master many other mediums so I stick with digital. I've dabbled in oil painting. Great comment. Thanks for writing :)
@Telindra2 жыл бұрын
@@LightingMentor it would be quite interesting to see you approach panting light, in some traditional mediums. I believe guache would work well too, with the method you showed. But watercolor is an entirely different beast, it definitely requires a lot more careful planning - and color and light knowledge too I believe. Specific to watercolors. However, problems are there to be solved. And deliberate practice do eventually make perfect.

I can't thank you enough for this tutorial! It helped me with so many things including lighting and color as well as noticing subtle details. You also made this look achievable! I can't say it looks "easy," but by your very detailed and easy instruction, I think I could actually do something like this. Thanks so much.

I love the simplicity of this tutorial, I'm an artist having the knowledge & experience in Core draw & Paint, Corelpainter & Adobe CC, but sincerely you wiped off me the overwhelming force that weighs me down in Corelpainter, I always want to use multiple brushes at the same time 😀, thanks greatly. 💪👍👍

It's so easy to get lost in the tools and lose sight of the art itself. I'm so glad you found this helpful. Keep creating my friend!

Thank you so much for this walk through, I really appreciate you picked something simple and easy to understand. I use to try still life photos that required way too much thinking but this is neat and clear.

This is super helpful! Also the mixer brush, I didn't even know that existed D: I appreciate that you started at square one with your photoshop setup video + the brushes, and showed the exact tools and process you were using in this video, without speeding it up or skipping steps. I tried to follow along on my own canvas :)

This was fantastic. I have been doing value studies and I am starting to understand that, but colour is overwhelming. This has helped a lot!

Painting along to you is a great help! I think I did pretty good with my egg on my own, but hearing your thought process on where more darker, more saturated colors should go provides great hints! :) Thank you for these videos, super cool!

I always have the question of 'is drawing what you see actually useful?' like i just gonna try to see and copy colours but what you said about intuition really helps me understand! thanks

This is such a good tutorial, I finally feel like I can understand how to actually paint digitally and that I understand how to use a real life picture to study. Unfortunately I only have a mouse at the moment so I can’t really use pressure to differentiate the different strokes of painting like you do, but the shapes and colours still work the same way.

I could tell his egg was off in proportion but when you’re busy with the painting it’s a whole other game

As someone who wanted to paint “really awesome concept art” Im so glad these videos to really hone in on the fundamentals. Even more stylized work benefits from this. Thanks for putting these out here for free, means a lot!!!

Jeremy, thank you so much for making and sharing your knowledge with us. I'm good when it comes to shading with a pencil, but have struggled with learning how to paint and blend with color. The way you teach makes it easy to understand and inspires others and myself. I hope you are doing well and thank you again. :D

Thank you Justin! I'm so glad this was helpful. I felt the same way years ago when I was comfortable with pencil and black and white but color eluded me, so I feel compelled to share as much as I can of my discoveries over the years. I'm so glad you found it helpful. Keep creating!
