I shot a gun down range the first time in my life today. Was some kind of Glock iteration, that was handed to me by the instructor. Im in germany so its not so easy to go shooting and this workshop had cost me 160 euros for 2 hrs. I was with a friend though, who had some hunting experience and had shot some thousand rounds already, in his life, but long time ago. We both had fun but the hit picture was very different. I had hit most of the shots in the black circle, but sometimes right, sometimes left, so not all of them together. I tried to experiemnt a bit with my grip and sight picture though, so all in all im happy for the frist time. His shots were "grouped" The first ones out of the black but all together. And after he got used to the long trigger pull he hit alsmost bullseye in the last 5 shots of 30. Mine werent so grouped but it still was an amazing experience and id really like to do this more often to get better at it just for the sake of it. :)

I just took the plunge and entered my very first competition exposure-- a steel match! No practice don't know what to expect but all the while my thoughts were hung up on safety and not to trip on the move! All that you were explaining was evident specially the mental stuff not being allowed to rapid fire. I just joined without any thought of winning to just know how it feels like. I was very slow when I reviewed footage asking a person to take a video of me-- at least I have an idea now of what I need! ...just hard to get to a range that allows that stuff. funny, i just did a video with this training incorporated in it as well. i train it as using your sights vs instinctive shooting. basically, reactive vs instinctive. very similar to how you are explaining it. the issue is, instinctive (or predictive as you call it) shooting is very perishable and requires lots of practice and reps to get good and remain good at it. for most people, they cant/dont train enough to acquire the muscle memory required for instinctive shooting. its good to make that clear... a slow hit is better than a fast miss.

Speaking off crazzy gun setups, I have muzzle brake on a 300blkout SBR, exclusively with a suppressor over it. Tried shooting it without the can once and never again. The concussive blast to my face is obnoxious. And overly distracting. Iv seen compensators do similar things. People trying to “cheat” by building something to have less recoil is not always a good answer either. Can actually make it worse. If 308 guns have 16+ inch barrels I think brakes are good, but it’s something to watch out for. Flash hiders still seem to reduce concussive blast to the shooters face the best. Suppressors are cool, but the weight makes it much more difficult to shoot well and fast. And this is coming from a guy who benches over 400 so it’s not a “hit the gym thing”

For the sake of saving money (and ammunition), how effective is training with a .22 LR pistol and rifle setup instead of using 5.56 and 9mm?
@rilesmattix5217Ай бұрын
Every caliber and rifle combo reacts differently to recoil. To save money, getting the basics down with 22lr is totally fine, but to get the major fundamentals (holds at longer ranges, recoil impulse, follow up shots) down with your fighting rifle requires you to shoot your fighting caliber out of it.
@namniagАй бұрын
.22 LR serves essentially the same purpose as dry fire. Weapons function, draw/shouldering, target acquisition, etc. The only benefit over dry fire is being able to train accuracy of a first round impact, which you can do with a laser in dry fire. With a completely different recoil impulse, training multiple round shooting will not only NOT prepare you for shooting larger calibers, it could potentially build poor habits if you aren’t used to or prepared for the recoil of those calibers. Not to mention, the cost of buying a 22LR pistol could be spent on buying 1-2k 9mm rounds, which will give you much more training benefit, and the same goes for a 22LR rifle. 22 definitely serves its open purpose, and you SHOULD train with it on occasion (or just for fun… shooting 22 is a blast and it’s cheap) but it shouldn’t be used as a replacement for 5.56 or 9mm.

“Predictive shooting” is just shooting slop up close. Reactive shooting can be done really fast. Fast enough to say “yea that’s a hit” that it feels like a reaction. Bubble burst time, if you aren’t shooting inside of the constraints “reactive” confirmation of sights on target or what is an “acceptable sight picture” you’re just sending rounds down range. Accuracy > speed. As all skills shooting fast is learned. Go buy ammo ;)
@tropicalpines4585Ай бұрын
I disagree. At a bare minimum it’s a very good way to train grip/trigger/vision (by shooting doubles or a bill drill). At best, it’s training to shoot at a pace you may need to if you’re ever in a gunfight at close range. Accuracy is greater than speed, but why not have both? If you look at most videos of police involved shootings, you’ll see they frequently involve the officer drawing and firing as fast as they can. If that’s a common condition in defensive shootings, why not train to be good at it?
