The Sixty is just incredible. This is what Caterpillar means to me. You must see one in person to understand what it does for people! That engine is huge.

The only "safety-sheilds" in those days was the training and how well you learned it. Plenty of folks learned the hard way, and some even survived. It took a lot of skill, respect and raw-nerves to work with these old timers.

You know, I think I remember seeing an advertisement from back in the day that sold a large piece of oiled canvas that could be attached to the hood of a tractor, and it had a hole to put your neck through, so that the warmth from the engine would be contained under the canvas for your body and arms, while the head was able to poke through so he could keep operating. I guess a tractor poncho... 😎👍👍

gasoline engine here, compression release valves let you turn the engine. When it fires, its under very little compression. You then close the compression valves before it will pull much. With them open, the engine runs but lots of pressure comes out the open valves. Timing is retarded but it has a spring cocking and release mechanism which quickly fires or snaps and gives velocity to the coils to provide a strong spark even with engine turning very slow. Once engine is up to minimum speed, the cocking no longer occurs and spark runs normally. At that time, spark can be adjusted to give strong power. Kinda neat units!! Thanks

Yeah, I would think that a person couldn't overcome the compression pressure fast enough to rotate the engine to start it. It appears that the valves let out just enough pressure that a person can turn it over, but not too much that it can't start.
