Anecdote on caffeine addiction: I know a guy was in a car crash with a lorry, in a coma in hospital after it. Injuries stabilised, but wouldn't come out of a coma. Doctors couldn't work out why. A friend came to visit, saw all the tubes and wires and joked "Which one of these is the caffeine drip?" Luckily one of the doctors heard, and on realising that their patient drank coffee as if it was water, they gave him IV caffeine. He stabilised and came out of his coma that day. That's a pretty serious withdrawal effect, IMHO.

Its much more complicated than Dopamine. There are 4 Adenosine receptors 2 of which caffeine effects. These receptors are responsible for transmission of Glutamate, GABA, and Dopamine. You are disrupting multiple neurotransmitters when you consume caffeine. I say this as I sit here drinking coffee.

Thomas, please do us a favor. When you start talking about a study, the FIRST thing you should inform your audience is who PAID for the study, so that we have a context as to whether or not it can be trusted. And I am sure you have also noticed, that these study reports try their best to hide information on who funded the study, rather than explicitly stating it at the beginning of the report. Thanks. p.s. Some of the worst studies, in other words, paid off "so called scientists", come from Harvard Medical school - they are consistently bought to produce results that the company funding them wants.

Interesting video. I think we all need to listen to our own bodies. I recently started waiting 45 minutes in the morning instead of drinking coffee right away and have noticed for me that I don't get the nervous jitters and shaking hands, and my blood pressure doesn't spike nearly as high. So for me, I feel it's beneficial to wait that small amount of time before having coffee. Also I have been surprised to see how awake I feel first thing after waking, and how fast that 45 minutes goes by, so it hasn't been an issue for me, and has been a good thing for me personally. So debunked or not, I say pay attention to, and listen to your own body and not what the "latest new study" has to say, because there will always be another latest new study, or "expert" that says something different. Interesting indeed. Thanks!

Some even noted that they didn't experience any significant difference when they quit caffeine for a while. However, others feel that caffeine induces anxiety, impacts their sleep, and leads to physical dependence or withdrawal symptoms when they try to quit. They report feeling better after quitting caffeine or switching to decaf. They also express concerns about the potential influence of the coffee industry on studies about coffee's health effects. A few people also pointed out that the effects of caffeine could vary based on individual factors.

The part about cortisol levels and coffee always introducing a 30% spike making it insignificant is misleading, and you should have noticed it. If a 30% spike in cortisol occurs no matter what, then it is obvious that a 30% increase in your cortisol levels when they are at their morning peak is greater than when you wait 1-2 hours for them to fall. Cortisol is the "stress" hormone, so to ignore this obvious difference in the net result cortisol based on the timing of caffeine consumption is a major flaw.

I'm 40 years old. I have noticed without doubt over recent years that coffee makes me gain weight (even black coffee) when compared to having only water- now I understand this is due to cortisol spikes which will lay down fat tissue when calories do eventually enter the body. Makes complete sense. Best way to lose weight is to keep cortisol low with keeping insulin low( I.e. fasting, I.e. water fasting is seemingly the King). Only issue is this- I'm addicted to coffee for work.

Suddenly I realize it's hours later and somehow that work all got done, I barely even remember doing it, the time just flew by. When I'm decaffeinated that same work is a bit more painful to finish. I realize I could do the work no matter what, but the coffee makes the time fly and it's *working*. I'm not taking any drugs or doing unhealthy stuff. I'm not experimenting with nootropics that could destabilize or have adverse affects. I just keep doing the same thing over and over drinking the coffee because it's working. I'm lucky that something is working for me. It's easy for things to go wrong in so many ways in life, so I can't see a reason to disrupt the one thing that is working for me.

I used to do the same. I used to come home from school, sit on the couch and drink coffee until I had a caffeine high and then I got up and started doing stuff. Difficult homework? Just drink a bunch of coffee and boom I'm doing it. Almost 12 cups a day, I counted one day. Now, years later, I'm diagnosed ADHD and drink 3 cups most. Just... uh... ya'know... a hint ;) If you're a smoker, nicotine has the same effect as caffeine which has the same effects as ADHD-medication.

I quit instant coffee for 7 months. I had zero withdrawals and no apparent benefits from giving it up. I started drinking decaf once a day. It didn't have good flavour (the only reason I drink it), so I went back to normal good instant coffee and still have no apparent issues from it. Sleep is good. If I miss it occasionally then I have no withdrawal type issues. It's my only 'vice' (no alcohol or drugs) and I'm comfortable with continuing to drink it. I'm probably not getting a huge amount of caffeine from 3 cups of instant coffee a day.

On addiction, it isn't addictive. I had 7 - 10 double shots of coffee in the day for more than two years, and then stopped drinking it with no ill effect's. It satisfied more than tea but I am 3 months down this road and still on tea but would prefer coffee.. I gave it up because coffee on an empty stomach damages the stomach lining.

@@inca3370 Most of the harm of "drugs" is from legal status and the very special place it holds in the real economy. Coffee industry is rife with slavery conditions, a great way to keep poor nations poor. Additionally, on the whole, caffeine is much more harmful healthwise not only because of the scale on which it is employed, but because of the way the processed food industry harnesses it's clearly addictive powers, in parallel with sugars, fats, and salts to exploit the same pathways in the brain as coke/heroin/etc. You may have noticed a health crisis? Also, people overdose on caffeine and die so... Now to the environmental impact of a billion or so sh1t-water guzzling addicts...

My understanding is that low caffeine metabolisers have a lower tolerance for caffeine, as it has a stronger effect on them. High caffeine metabolisers process it more quickly and so can take higher doses. In my family all the low metabolisers are tea drinkers and the high are coffee drinkers. I personally love the smell of coffee but can’t drink it. I did have however a massive coca cola addiction for many years, and random headaches. My GP advised quitting the Coke for 3 months and I really did not think it would work but decided to humour him. The headaches vanished. Caffeine may not be addictive, but there is something going on. Maybe withdrawal symptoms. Maybe dehydration. I was just as hooked on the diet stuff so I don’t think it is the sugar.

I started drinking regular coffee when I was 15, but now 10 ounces are as much as my system can handle. Beyond that I get tinnitus that often goes back and forth between my ears. I have a new primary and when the nurse took my blood pressure and so on it was normal. By the time the nurse practitioner came in U had to listen more carefully because the sound of my heart was beating in my left ear. So now that I do not drink caffeine regularly it seems to be only when I have regular coffee knowing it is going to be a busy day. My next appointment with my dietician is in August and I am going to see if she has any suggestions, but the endo she works with said it was unlikely to have anything to do with my sodium levels being below normal range. So it is possible that caffeine may be confusing my thyroid. It still has some function, but if I were to go off of synthroid I would gain 20 pounds in a week and my A1C would climb to 7.2. The thyroid does not have to be completely dead for caffeine to be a problem when someone has hypothyroidism.
