Yeah the way the Terran Empires government and culture functions is really archaic and cartoonishly evil, everyone apparently murdering their COs to ascend the ranks and all. This confederation of earth seems like a more believable take on what a militaristic expansionist federation would look like. It's an authoritarian militaristic state but sort of like the UCF from starship troopers there appears to be some sort of pseudo democracy (where only humans can vote and the system is largely rigged in favor of accomplished military officers like alternate Picard). It's not all about the title of emperor that constantly changes hands due to civil war like Rome but a fairly stable government with a population that is mostly sold on the idea of humanity conquering the galaxy.

Different Universe. The Mirror Universe was at least that. A mirror universe the opposite of the prime but different enough that its own timeline was the opposite of yours. Especially since they do the militarized version of Starfleet better than the Terrans IMO. Terrans are supposed to be more war-minded and bloodthirsty than the Federation, but all their ships look like Fed ships with a bit of (admittedly nice looking) paint on them and a different emblem. The painting of the Galaxy class here clearly is chock-full of weapons everywhere and the secondary hull looking like it could unleash a swarm of fighters or invasion troops. A militarized Starfleet wouldn't make identical ships, they would optimize them for pure destruction in the most efficient way possible. No hotels for civvie families here, sir, just the storage and generators for the 8 additional torp launchers under redundant thick armor.

The ISS Enterprise-D in that book was described as having sharper and more savage angles with a weapons loadout that would have easily destroyed the USS Enterprise-D. I'd like to think that's where the showrunners took the inspiration, but I'm not sure any of them actually read.

So this is what Q was referring to in the Farpoint encounter when he kept showing the crew examples of humanities savage past. I liked the references to Yesterday's Empire and A Mirror Darkly. The Continuum had already seen examples of humanities savagery looking at the Terran empire. Could this also be why Q put humanity in first contact with the Borg a lot sooner than intended. When you think about it the Borg also demonstrate a polar opposite to this form of savagery. On one side the human race seek to dominate the whole galaxy, killing all who oppose them and enslaving those who surrender to them. On the other side you have the Borg who seek to assimilate the entire galaxy, assimilating all and their infrastructure for the benefit of the collective.

It stands to reason that they may have sought help from alternate timelines in the past as well, but might prefer the Prime timeline. This is conjecture of course, but I think it rationalises things?

By this point the Terran empire had collapsed and Humanity ruled by the Klingon and Cardassians. Could this be the new threat? A new competent non cartoonish terrain empire? Maybe even one of the players during the temporal war. Personally I don't think the war was between races but different versions of the Federation.

Think of the holodeck or Admiral Marcus' table displaying a rotating hologram of a torpedo in Into Darkness. Holographic screens, consoles, etc would be awesome in Trek, if they made them the way holodeck holograms are instead of following the trend in other sci fi media. I would love a holographic tv screens that just pops into existence and looks like a real scren.

It's a common failing in sci-fi; in the Voyager finale Janeway uses a monitor that is also transparent, because it's "futuristic" (supposed to be a holographic image but in the 90s, it was a bit harder to pull off)....why would you want everybody behind your monitor to see what you're looking at? Even if we do get holograms in the future, most day to day tasks will still be on screens with a opaque back to them, for practicality alone.

The Terran Empire was just barbarians in space. No discipline, all rules were merely just suggestions, etc... it was a universe of chaos. True authoritarian regimes stamp out division at the slightest drop of a hat, enforce absolute order and disobedience towards authority is generally met with execution. I don't think there would be an Enterprise D in the mirror universe. The NX Enterprise had a rather dismal end, and I don't think there was an Enterprise when the Mirror Universe was introduced.

The Borg a cybernetic race that has genocides countless species, destroyed. The Klingons, enemies of Humanity that has a empire of enslaved races, destroyed. The Cardassians who started a Galactic wide war brutalized the Bojorans and brought the Dominion to the Alpha Quadrant., destroyed. So other than the "Confederation" not tolerating bullshit, what makes them so bad exactly? The Federation allowed a lot of injustics to happen and let truely evil species like the Borg to survive and destroy more races to satisfy "muh principles" than the Confeds. This Season seems to make more arguments FOR a strong Humanity First country than against.

Q went back in the prime universe's timeline and changed something. Dominoes fell, confederation rose, Picard wound up evil, then he swapped them all out with their original variants. All this to teach Picard a lesson about acting out of fear and grudge. Q has been there with the borg as long as with humanity. He chose them to introduce Picard to. Them to by the catalyst to push him past his inner ape and into something bigger. It pissed him off a great deal that Picard chose in a moment of duress to act on instinct and eradicate them.
