From what I've read, Hemmer was intended from the beginning to die in Season One, since his overall purpose was to help Uhura choose to stay with Starfleet. Mission accomplished. Still, I miss the big lug.

3:34 "Do not weep for me. I had a good life. It's time for me to go." That is a very powerful line. Something similar I told myself when my grandfather died of cancer at 86 years old. He had a long, fullfill life, full of joy. It ending was sad, but rather than weep because it ends, celebrate it's positives.

How many people noticed the reference to Captain Oates who said 'I'm just going outside now.'? That was during the doomed Captain Scott expedition to the South Pole in 1912 and he went outside in a blizzard to certain death to give a better chance for survival to the rest of the expedition.

There are a lot of references to Alien3 in this episode. Newborn gorns are very similar to the chestburster that emerges from the dog. Or in both, the characters used themselves as live bait, running down corridors to lure the monster into a room and then destroy it with ice gas or hot lead. But Hemmer's death is the most serious. He dies in almost the same way as Ripley. He commits suicide, throwing himself backwards into the abyss before the killer monster hatches out of him. Hemmer sacrificed himself for his friends, Ripley for humanity.

Well he’s from Andoria. He is of the cold, a deep part of Andorias caves. Perhaps he goes into a hibernation mode and the gorn within him die. He may be back, just maybe.. I hate he’s dead.I hate it.

I don't know if this is intentional, but the overall theme for Pike and his inevitable fate is true for the whole crew. We all know who makes it to the start of TOS, and so there is this feeling of dread for those who don't.

I'd like to thing it is an intentional parallel. Sometimes Interquel and prequel characters can make it out and even get new stories in the present*, but if your story demands the drama of death or a special dark fate, the established characters are off limits, so you work with what's available.

If they had more time, the growing Gorn within Hemmer could've been extracted. Sadly, there wasn't any time left. Hemmer knew this, and so did La'an. Rather than risk anyone else getting killed by the Gorn that would've violently come from his body, Hemmer made the choice to sacrifice himself. His parting advice to Uhura would help shape her decisions while the Vulcan farewell to Spock showed deep respect to his crewmate. Hemmer died with a smile on his face with good memories of home going through his mind. His sacrifice would motivate Chapel to find a way to extract Gorn from the unfortunate host at the end of season 2.

Some things about this episode just don't make sense. Like how a newly hatched Gorn can get so big in a matter of hours. It takes time to eat, metabolized food, and grow. And you have to have something to eat. ALIEN also suffered from this same impossible scenario. Body mass does not come from nowhere and growth is not instantaneous.

in alien, the xenomorph could supposedly digest ore/ metal apart from host nutrand it got big by eating the store ore in nostromo after all it was bio engineered. the gorn in SNE was a cheap knockoff without any detailed insight into their biology

This was such a loss to Strange New Worlds. A major issue with all Star Trek series is how completely human they end up feeling. A character that feels so alien with blindness and telepathic traits was so interesting. Not to mention how well his personality rounded off the crew while still feeling like a part of the family.

I like what he says Hammer says and voice to to text keeps spilling everything I say wrong I wanted to say this and that is he says what anyone who knows they're going to die but gets to choose the when which is something so few get a chance to do these days, like what he says " Do not weep for me I've had a good life, it's time for me to go..." He also gives very good advice to Uhura and she doesn't forget him which is what anyone who is alone can hope for that somehow your life will have enough meaning that somebody will remember you. He also has the blessing of a memory when he says as he's about to do the only thing he can do which is fall off the Enterprise and that is, how much like Andora it is.

He's not dead. The Andorians thrive, in the cold ; ridiculous agonizing cold to most huminoid species a brisk fall day for Andorians. The Gorn, not so much. Furthermore, as stated in the episode the eggs gestate at different speeds in different species. The fall may not have killed Hemmer if he fell at all. If it didnt the extreme cold may make the eggs dormant or kill them outright. Hemmer on the other hand will probably be running naked purging himself and using mental / telepathic discipline to maintain control. He'll be back.

Who came to the insane idea to let him make a sacrifice, which really kills him. Could he just not have gotten in winter sleep and only the Gorn killed? No, he had to fall from the clip. Hope they show that there was something on which he fell and their sensors did just not detect it, so he can come back. On the other side, he cannot come back, at least not in this position, because they have to introduce Scott sooner or later.
