People might wonder "Why is she so scared of emotions?". But then you remember that Vulcan greed, anger, jealousy, vengeance, and wrath nearly rendered their world uninhabitable and their species functionally extinct. In the Next Generation, when Picard tried to contain the emotions Sarek funneled into him through a mind-meld (at Picard's request, so that Sarek could complete one last mission even though he was suffering from a neural condition that eroded his emotional control), Picard flat *could not* hold any of it in. It wasn't that Picard isn't self-disciplined and in control of himself. It's just that Vulcan emotions are far more intense than human emotions, and just beyond any normal human's ability to contain.
@purplefood1
@purplefood1 6 ай бұрын
@@woodrobin Yeah Vulcan emotional control is absolute because it has to be which explains why they were somewhat worried about humans as we can sometimes run real hot but that's generally more a spike in emotion rather than a general baseline.

Sadily the actress herself was also part of why the Tri'pol storyline wasn't taken where originally intended, she became rather adamant about the idea of a Vulcan not having emotions or being in a love arc, apparently she wanted to play a "normal" vulcan as up to that point pretty much all main character vulcans shown to express emotions for one reason or another. Personally I don't think she ever caught onto the fact that vulcans do in fact have and experience emotions they just have a very tight control on how they show them or let them influence their throught prosses.

I originally thought Jolene was brough on as eye candy, (ex model I think) and vulcans don't show emotion so less acting required, but she was far better than I expected. Subtle repressed emotions and silent expressions of her inner thoughts were very good. She was great at Tpol in the series plus she did look beautiful too.
@blackrock1961

Less acting. Do you think Leonard Nimoy got away with less acting when he played Mr. Spock? I would think it would be harder to give a convincing performance when you can't express a large range of emotions.
@antonyeastham4564
@antonyeastham4564 5 ай бұрын
@@blackrock1961 Which is what I said. Facepalm. She was an ex model so wasn't expected to show emotion, less acting experience, like yknow, acting, but her subtle reactions through the series showed how good she became at that character. The figure hugging uniform was the first noticeable thing but she showed she was more than that by the end of the series run. And yes, Nimoy did less acting with only a couple of scenes in episodes where his emotions surfaced. He filmed less episodes than JB and in the feature films, he did what was expected. JB played a more interesting character than LN, but I like them both. Objectively JB did a better acting job than LN. She got better storylines.

This is a sad episode indeed. T'Pol meeting her older self and actually talking about emotion. On Vulcan, a conversation of that "intimacy" would be considered crass and often offending to all but very close members. But the elder T'Pol when she discussed Tripp, you could feel in her voice an insatiable sorrow. A loss as even if Tripp had lived a normal life and married her, she would have lost him to sheer age. A human of their time can live about 120 or a little more max in that time. But a healthy Vulcan, can potentially live up to 300 years. Zakal the Terrible in the time of Surak, lived 276 years and that was in the past. And it was obvious T'Pol loved Tripp very much. So the loss to T'Pol would stay with her for over a century and since Vulcans have eidetic memory, she would remember their times.

I think it would’ve been the most powerful scene in the episode.

Not exactly. It was shown that as a teen he had rejected his Vulcan upbringing and was saved (so to speak) by a Vulcan Master. He also suffered from a parasite that lived in his subconscious mind, he mindmelded with Lon Suder and almost went mad, he was attacked by an alien who left him semi-amnesiac and without any emotional restraint (and he didn't want go back to his usual being), he went through pon-farr and, on top of that, he was suffering from a neurodegenerative disease that, if Voyager had not returned home soon enough, would have incapacitated him. It wouldn't do much good. As soon as you reached the past, every quantum event in the universe from that point on would be completely indeterminate again. You could give them your opinions on things, your thoughts and feelings. You could provide them with permanent information like teach them how to code, or something. But knowledge of any events or anything would be completely worthless. None of the future you remember would happen...pretty much at all. Also, you'd have to be a clone of yourself before you go back, because if you try to send your "original" body back, then you'll be "missing" as time rewinds, and that is going to fuck up a LOT of shit along the way. And as a result, there'd be no younger "you" to meet at all.

That never happened. Riker and Troi once again were using a typically malfunctioning holodeck on the Enterprise D. Their "history" was misinformed and there's nothing noncanon about that. Trip lived a long life. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Why does T'pol look so old? Vulcans live to 400 years old, and she was only in her sixties when she entered the expanse. The old T'pol should barely be middle-aged in this scene.

A lot of people think Star Trek Enterprise was not a very good show and that's why it got canceled after four seasons. I don't agree. I think there was Star Trek fatigue after having Star Trek shows run simultaneously from 1987 all the way through 2005. What I liked about Enterprise not only did I think it was a cool concept of going roughly a century before Captain Kirk Star Trek to see what the Federation was like they were just figuring things out and turns of traversing the alpha quadrant, but Trip and Tpol having a romance together. That makes sense. It never made sense to me in Star Trek next Generation that you have all these women and men who are in the prime of their lives and they're not hooking up. Riker should have been hooking up with the end of Troy from the get-go, the card with crusher, and Worf with Natasha Yar.

It was cancelled because the channel big wigs put it up against, if I remember correctly, Battlestar Galactica in the same time slot, which resulted in disappointing ratings, which is to be expected, any person with half a brain could have predicted that, putting 2 shows with the same niche audience up against each other would obviously not result in improved ratings. Also pretty much every Star Trek series needs 2 or 3 seasons for them to get good, the writers and actors are still feeling out the characters etc. most other Star Trek series got 6+ seasons, Enterprise only got 4 so it got canceled just after it had hit it's stride and was getting really good.

If I had a nickel for every time a Star Trek series cast a woman purely for eye candy, only for her to actually be a good actor and one of the top characters of their series, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice in a row.
