I reeeaally like that this guy showed a lot of the un-fun parts of rescuing a stray -- the bath thing, the injuries, the new and unexpected vet bills, issues with existing pets, the pooping in random places... It makes you appreciate his efforts even more, as well as those of other rescuers and of shelter workers. It's not always pretty or convenient to help an animal, usually far from it. But those who go ahead and do it anyway, I think, have special access to the meaning of life. You're awesome, James!

@Friskies Catfood I really don't get why people don't think cats and dogs are cute when they're grown up. Dogs can be so adorable and loving once they get out of the 'chew everything to bits' stage. And they're loyal to you. Cats are just cute whatever age they are. I have 2 cats, around 6-7 years old I believe not entirely sure. One is the most fuss dependant cats ever, you touch him and he turns into a cat puddle. The other is opinionated and talks back at you. They are my beautiful fuzzballs and I wouldn't have it any other way.

@@1jazzyphae ABsolutely...and he has those wonderful extra (polydactyl) toes. Makes him special --years ago I took in two siblings from a feral mother - red and white just like this poor guy. Both with the extra toes. HE came in later than the female did, since she was already pregnant and I had to have her babies placed with a good no-kill shelter and then have her spayed, so he stayed outside (in the Summer and on our deck with plenty of food, water and shelter) while I took care of her and our house full of other cats. He could shinny up and down trees and our shed like a monkey with those extra 'thumbs' of his. Unfortunately, in that brief space of time he also, somehow, contracted FELV, so this wonderful boy who became my shadow and would sleep wrapped around my neck had his life cut short at 6-l/2 while his sister lived to 11. Topaz and Amber. His name was a play on 'toe-pads'. :) Nowadays, all of my original feral but brought in and raised by me kitties live into their 20's. My longest lived was JenniPurr who passed two years ago at 23. Not a record, but close to it. Others of her litter made it to 20 and 21. Good food, good vet care, cuddling with each other and me, watching the world and our birdfeeder through a big window and lots of love does wonders for cats' longevity. I rarely attempt bathing one, though - although I have used baby wipes on messy butts here and there. James is a marvel.

Watching this took me back because this is exactly how I first got my cat a couple of years ago, she just started turning up at my doorstep, scratching at the door to get in, so I started letting her in, feeding her, etc. She was very small and thin and she’d always be waiting on my doorstep for me same time everyday, when I got home from work on a morning. After a couple of months of her coming and going every day I noticed she was pregnant and found she was living in a rubbish tip area near by, so I decided to take her in full time. I remember the pooing and peeing everywhere, it was very frustrating at the time, I have laminate flooring but she’d always find the worst possible place to do it, where it’s hardest to clean up, like on the rug or on the bedding, one time early on she had diahroea and rolled in it, that was a particular nightmare, as I had to bathe her which she absolutely hated. Fortunately after a lot of work, she eventually started using her litter tray. The work you put in is paid back 1000 fold, once they’re happy and healthy, now she follows me around the house everywhere, always excitedly runs to greet me when I get home, sleeps on my lap or on the end of my bed when I’m asleep and has become an irreplaceable part of the family. Can’t imagine life without her. 😸
@87PLS3 жыл бұрын
@Jody Lien your way too kind, It really was my pleasure. I’m just incredibly grateful of all places she found my door to scratch at, as she would almost certainly not be alive right now if she hadn’t. About a month after I took her in she went into Labour, right whilst sitting on my lap, which I thought was crazy as I’d read online about how cats like to give birth somewhere quiet and secluded, so I picked her up, put her into a birthing box I’d prepared for her in the bedroom and thought I’d leave her to it. Amazingly she followed me back to the living room and kept meowing at me till I stood up, and then she started walking back to the bedroom, occasionally stopping and looking back whilst meowing to make sure I was following her. She then jumped on my bed, which I understood as that was where she’d chosen to give birth, so I laid some towels and blankets down for her and sat with her on the bed, trying to comfort her. Every time I tried to leave the room she would follow me. So I ended up having to sit with her on the bed for the best part of 3 days. 😄 After the first day had passed without any kittens I rang the vets and asked for their advice, but they told me it can take up to 3 days so not to worry and keep monitoring her. On the morning of day 3 I was getting really worried as she still hadn’t birthed any kittens and she had just started bleeding and a really foul smell was coming from her, so I immediately rushed her into the vets. They told me she had a very nasty uterus infection called pyometra, which is basically where the uterus fills up with puss, it sounded incredibly painful, yet she must have been incredibly brave as she had shown absolutely no signs of being in pain, even through her Labour she’d been so quiet. The vet also said she was miscarrying her kittens but because of the infection she couldn’t birth them so they would need to rush her into surgery. So unfortunately she did lose all of her kittens, the vet told me there were 4 of them but they weren’t properly developed. I was absolutely heart broken, but the vet did tell me when they opened her up they couldn’t believe how bad the infection was, she said she could still smell it hours after the surgery and she said she almost certainly would have died if she was left on the streets and no one had brought her in, so despite the big vet bills I now had to pay, I was very happy that she was going to be ok and I got to take her home again that same evening. She’s an amazing cat and I’m so glad she turned up at my door when she did, she was worth every penny I’ve had to spend on her. I’m just sorry I couldn’t also save her unborn kittens.😔

If every stray cat gets TNR, then there'd be no future strays

@@zoeydeu2261 If people didn't let their pet cats out to breed or abandoning them. Otherwise TNR would be working by now and it's not obviously.

@Vladimir Olegovich People have to spay/neuter their cats and dogs. Then, there will not be so many homeless animals trying to survive..
@zoeydeu22613 жыл бұрын
@@elizabethklein7073 most responsible owners neuter their pets, or adopt them from shelters or breeders/pet shops that neuter the pets before adopting/selling them. And yes those who abandon un-neutered pets or let them out to breed are the source of new strays. That's why I think veterinary schools should do an annual free spaying service for owners who can't afford it, and pet rescue groups should do a mobile service that go to collect pets to take to shelters if owners no longer want them. And have a register for pet owners, so the ones who keep buying and dumping animals are banned from buying more pets. That said TNR does work to stop existing stray colonies from growing. It might not stop the problem, but it prevents the problem from getting worse

I feel so saddened by the indifference and cruelty exhibited towards animal in human life on this beautiful planet we inhabit. But the compassion and care given by these guys to this absolute darling little cat is antidote to the negativity I see around me. Thanks to them and each and every person who selflessly gives their time, energy and money to make any animals' lives better. God bless you and your fur babies :)
