In Rogue One Mon Mothma is a leader of the Rebel Alliance, but how did she attain that position?
In the final days of the Clone Wars, she pressed the Senate to remove Supreme Chancellor Palpatine’s executive powers. So it is not surprising charges were filed against her for colluding with the Jedi Order. Openly declaring her loyalty to the Empire, the charges were dropped.
Steeping herself in the Senate, she worked to bring change and reform from the inside. Working closely with Bail Organa, she became a political tutor to Princess Leia. True to her belief and hope that she can affect change from within, she rallies many to her cause against the looming autocracy until two years before the Battle of Yavin.
Finding herself at the top of the Empire’s Most Wanted list, she broadcasts a message across the HoloNet. Resigning from the Senate, she declares she will be fighting on the front lines against the Empire, asking if anyone would join her. That day the Alliance to Restore the Republic was born and the Galactic Civil War began.

What I like about new canon is the scattered Rebel groups finally uniting behind a common leader like Mothma. And with Andor showing how difficult it was to go down that path, it makes her as the Rebel leader even more impressive.

Old canon: there was many feared people, who actually wanted to fight the Empire. They thought, no one would support them (because of fear or propaganda and actual problems, that republic had before becoming empire), but after years of repressions they came up with resources, people and realization, that time of diplomacy have passed away and the empire must be stopped. New canon: one person said "kick the Emperor" and everyone agreed, except white middle aged guys with brittish accent
