American here, I never say "panties". I agree, it IS a cringy word . Everyone I know says mostly, " underwear" or "undies" or the old fashioned "bloomers" (if being silly). I do love your use of "knickers". "Pants" are a general term for full length jeans or trousers. Use your word, "knickers". I've heard the word many times so know what it means, I think most Americans do. If they don't, I think they can figure it out from the context of your video. Thank you for your video, I'm concerned with the way things are in the world that we might not be able to get elastic (and other things) or afford it at some point. So good to know different ways of making necessities. ❤

Agreed. Literally no one I've every met uses that word. They are undies or underwear. I do not know who coined the word or where it is being used, but it isn't by actual American women.

Only thing I struggled with was the "grading" of the gusset part - could you possibly show this in more detail please if you do another underwear video? Low rise boy shorts, or bikini briefs would be ace! PS thank you also for including the captions option.
@LizGrylls4 жыл бұрын
Hi Anne. The grading just means that I cut into the seam allowance layers of the gusset seam at varying widths. One layer was cut about ⅜", one about ¼" and one about ½" just to stop the seam being super bulky. You could overlock that seam if you wanted but I find it's better straight stitched and graded.

Lovely video, thank you. Sewing Bee has encouraged me to learn to sew. I have a sewing machine but it seems a lot of projects would benefit from having an over locker - is it worth getting one and are they easy enough to use? Thank you
@LizGrylls4 жыл бұрын
Honestly if you ask anyone who bought an Overlocker they will tell you it will take your sewing to the next level, especially on stretch fabrics. They're not hard to use, it's just worth noting that overlocked seams are a bit more irritating to unpick and impossible to correct if something is too small (they chop the seam allowance off)

@denisedavies35752 жыл бұрын
What if you don't have an overlocker, what stitch would be best to use please?
@LizGrylls2 жыл бұрын
It depends for which part of the construction you're referring to. If side seams/connecting the gusset pieces i would favour a triple straight stitch which is stretchy and won't pop. If your machine doesn't have that stitch you could try a really shallow zig zag or lightning stitch.

I call them undies. That way they are either for girls boys or other👍 I an a Mumma of two daughters and one son. One of the under garment patterns has two pieces for the gusset. And the seam is sandwiched in so there isn't a raw edge. It is a brilliant way. It is a little fiddly but once you understand how it works, it is 'why didn't I think of that!' Kind of situation!😆😊❤️👍

Since I do not have a coverstitch machine yet, Is there any way to make these with 100% serger. I could whip out the sewing machine and do it. I am working on a few lycra projects now.
@LizGrylls3 жыл бұрын
You'd still need a way of hemming them around the legs and waist. There is a way with the serger in theory. You can either make a mock "band" by folding the hem up and then back on itself and serging (overlocking) the edge. Or there is a way to get a flat lock which involves loosening the tension on the left needle and doing as above with the mock band but do not cut the edge. When you flatten the hem back out you get vertical stitches on the right side and overlocking on the back. I'd consider both of these methods "hacks" though and your sewing machine might give a neater finish. If you're up for the experiment though it could be interesting!
