State of Emergency Will NEVER be Remade *MATURE*

State of Emergency is a beat-em-up riot simulator developed by VIS Entertainment and published by Rockstar Games in 2002 for the PlayStation 2. An Xbox and Windows port were released in 2003.
In this mostly-peaceful review, I'll break down this forgotten gem. It's not perfect, it's not even that great, but it was a big deal for a hot minute.
Suffice it to say, the subject matter is pretty sensitive in the year of our lord and it's doubtful that a company would bring this game back to life any time soon. At least we have the memories.
ATTENTION: None of this is meant to be a political statement. I think politics is a big game that we are slaves to; Right, left, red, blue...I hate all of it equally. This is simply meant to be an education on game development and the creative capabilities of technical artists, especially within the confines of outdated hardware. If YOU want to make this a political argument to make yourself feel better...then I'm just kind of sorry for you.

The first State of Emergency to me always had a slight cartoonish feel to it, with the vibrant colors and somewhat goofy animations. If I can’t mimic the Fear Effect style, then it’s probably gonna be anime inspired instead, I know that sounds a bit cheesy, but that’s mainly what I’m good at.

This game just like Manhunt was released with an MA15+ rating here and then later had to be taken off store shelves. Unlike Manhunt though it got censored and re-released. The ability to decapitate people and use their head as a weapon had to be removed.

But that meant that some games got released with a lower rating than they should. Manhunt shouldn't have been rated MA15+ in the 1st place. Thankfully we got the R18+ rating over 15 years ago.

Manhunt 2 just never got submitted for classification and MK9 got refused classification because of 1 or 2 fatalities. But not too long after MK9 was refused classification we got the R18+ rating and the game was resubmitted for classification and got the R18+ rating and was released uncensored.

I couldn’t disagree any stronger about Mario games being so much better as I always found hem to be annoying boring rubbish. 5e babyish noises Mario makes just wanted me to pull ngers and hair out every time. I will admit I like the Luigi haunted mansion series though. As far as Stare of Emergency goes, I managed to get a near mint copy for the original Xbox. It looks like it was never even opened. Back in the day we could only hire out the PS2 version on weekends as nobody here I was could afford the $100 price tag to buy this game here in Australia. This game was thankfully from a time before social media intruded into people’s lives in such a terrible and intrusive way too. You could just switch off your brain and have fun with this game and many others such as Soldier of a fortune 2 without fear of judgement from strangers. I often go days now where I just switch the phone off for days on end and sit back on the couch and just play games is era and have fun. I have managed to get quite a good collection of original Xbox and some 360 games such as The Punisher, State of Emergency, Jericho - which is a brilliant squad based shooter by the way, Buffy and Buffy Chaos Bleeds, Wreckless 2 - Double Steal, all the brilliant James Bond games, the True crimes games. There is very little reason to bother with anything past the 360 time frame unless you are into multi player.

This game had a sticker on it demanding that customers show ID to buy it. I was a teen at that time and tried lying about my age to buy it but one of my local stores refused to sell it to me. I thought I'll finally find out that the game I've played the shit out of as a kid with ~0 knowledge of the English has a great story or satire. I guess I didn't lose much back then. Still, had a lot of fun. One of those games, that comes back to you in flashes every couple of years, and nobody else knows what are you talking about. You can play the Dreamcast version of Unreal Tournament with the mouse and keyboard for that system. Kiss Psycho Circus doesn't support it lol. There was a PS2 port for UT 1 as well. Shame they never ported Unreal 1/Gold to consoles.

Something like State of Emergency is a lot less hard to believe in the wake of 2020 and 2021 having weirdly made something like the game’s premise a lot more believable. However, I would like to stress that the news media have gotten so good at spinning reality into narratives…if the events of the game actually happened? It would be spun into something mostly peaceful or some sort of insurrection depending on the “why” of things 🤷🏽‍♂️

I remember this was supposed to be Rockstars version of a SOR type of title. Game was straight cheeks. I might still have this somewhere in the game chest, but man I was so disappointed by this game. It was hyped quite a bit for the time. I don't even think I beat it. Might have got half way through it and I couldn't do it anymore.

I had one friend that would just grind away at it to the point where I couldn’t be bothered to try it. But now, I think the animations and chaos on screen look rad. oh yeah, not sure if you played it, but the game narc was pretty controversial too. that game let you be a undecover cop and take drugs. And even overdose if you kept doing it and you would wake up without alot of your resources lol. That game was pretty controversial too back then. Thanks for reminding me of this game though. hard disagree about the direct comparison to dynamite cop and fighting force. those are actual traditional beatemups. this is just a closed gta game. generic third person ARCADE action often times shooter or at least mostly reliant on weapon pickups vs a fleshed out unique moveset and critical stat variation among characters
