State of Texas: TxTag Troubles

Matt Grant is back with an up date into our TxTag Troubles project. He found a total of 1.4 million accounts - or 60% of TxTag account holders - weren't transferred over to Harris County Toll Road Authority because they were inactive for a year prior or had a negative balance, according to TxDOT. In addition, the transition left behind millions of dollars in positive balances in customer accounts that TxDOT will be trying to return soon.

But I don’t owe the money. I didn’t drive on their tollway and I’ve never been anywhere near Dallas in 40 years. I am not working for their company for hours and hours arguing and getting hung up on day after day trying to resolve their company’s criminal bills when I never used their tollway. They refused to resolve the matter and stop it from happening again. I do not work for their company and they are not compensating me hourly for the frustration of trying to resolve the billing problem over and over again. The only way I made the bills stop is by not paying them so that that person who has stolen my license plate cannot get through the tollway now. The gate won’t open for them so they cannot run up bills on my license plate number. That’s the only way I had to stop them because Texas tag would not stop them.

Honestly, I am okay with toll roads because its not paid by all tax payers. It is paid by people who actually use the road. The maintenance of the road is paid by ongoing tolls. Now, do these tolls need a continuous income of a billion dollars per year? No. And toll roads that were supposed to have tolls removed should do as planned.

Toll roads were not built with taxpayer funds. Toll roads are paid for by the tolls you pay. My objection is that, once the bonds are retired, the tolls continue to be assessed to allegedly pay for maintenance, but the toll amounts are not reduced. So where does this extra money go?

I despise toll roads. In addition to that at age 71 I have never used one. I live in Cen Tx. and have not been to, or through Dallas, Ft. Worth in over 20 years. And yet, last year after buying a used car, I was charged over $300.00 in "toll fees." My temporary tags were used on a vehicle similar to mine. I explained all this to the toll company. I had to jump through hoops to have it straightened out. And guess what? they have recently begun billing me AGAIN! Absolutely lunacy!!

They did the same thing to me. I sold a car, filed it as sold with all the proper documentation, and was still getting toll bills for two years after. I called 5 times, and after repeatedly submitting the same information and documentation all 5 times, I finally got them to remove the fees from my account. It was like a clown show.

Same here but it’s not a temporary tag. Someone has stole my license plate number and they keep using Dallas tollway and I live over 300 miles away. I spent hours and hours days and days trying to get it resolved and it happened again. I spent hours and hours and days and days of working for their company trying to resolve it and it happened again. Then I realized if I don’t pay the toll and it becomes late than the person cannot keep using the tollway because the gate won’t open for them. So the only way I could stop a criminal who stole my tags and stop receiving a bill for what they’re doing. Is to stop paying the bill. It’s been going on for three years.

I worked with HCTRA as a law-enforcement officer over a period of seven years and use HCTRA roads every day. I also worked for Harris County for 15 years. They are a decent county department, and they always seem to put a big emphasis on customers, which is shocking for a government agency. The only thing I did not care for was their violation fees, which were about $33 per toll. If a person‘s card expired and they missed a few tolls, they would find themselves owing way more than just the toll amount then if they couldn’t or didn’t pay, their vehicle would become prohibited. When I worked there, they were really big on taking people to jail for operating motor vehicle on toll road when prohibited. I thought this was pretty tyrannical considering it’s a slippery slope for some people who are not as financially well off as others. I understand we have to ensure people pay their tolls to fund new roads, supposedly, but people don’t need to be put in exorbitant debt or have their liberties taken away for missing a few tolls

They will not file that someone is criminally using another person‘s tag. They just keep billing the wrong people. They’ve done it to me for three years and I just stopped paying my bills, and I noticed that the criminal no longer uses my tag to go through the tollway. I assumed it’s because the gate won’t open for them because the bill is late and someone told me that that’s not the case but it apparently works for me. I tried getting it resolved for months and it just kept happening over and over again. I guess I’m gonna have to save up to get some personalized license plates.

Im a 100% disabled vet and "owe" $3700 to the toll roads from years ago, after they claimed on their website that disabled vets with proper tags could travel those roads for free. I didn't get a bill for an entire year, then they remove that statement from their website and slap me with a massive bill for a years worth of tolls. My vehicle registration still says 2021 because they have blocked it. Mind you, these toll roads are owned by a Spanish company. Why can't the state run under one tag. Every other state uses one system for all their toll roads. Florida has Sunpass and has had it for years. Sunpass works from Key Largo to Jacksonville to Pensacola. It's not rocket science.

My wife and I had to travel through Houston in June of 2016 on the way to Galveston when we were forced onto a toll road due to severe flooding. I knew we had incurred a toll, through no fault of our own, and contacted the local toll authority within two weeks. It was about $12 for traveling about 3.5 miles and the bill said it was a FINE, not a toll. 😡 Welcome to texass, Drive Friendly! Give me a break! 🙄

Had a HCTRA tag for years and never had any problems with them. I now have a NTTA tag and have never had any problem with them. All my toll problems have been with TexTag roads not reading my tag on some of their equipment. And they did not bill timely!

I am having this kind of problem with Reliant Centerpoint electricity. They had to come out to find out why so much electricity was being used and then they said something was definitely wrong but they were sure what, needed to send more advanced technicians out. In the meantime they sent me $900 bill. And I refused to pay it. I had to dispute it with them for months, eventually they said they'd send for investigation. A company investigating themselves- not a conflict of interest at all right? Of course they determined I owed them 100% of the bill- what a shock. I still refused and they sent it to collections. Now I'm dealing with that.. these companies are so corrupt!

It's terrible, my ex wife sold a truck she was given in our divorce. The person that bought the truck never transferred it into his name and started driving on the toll roads. It took 3-4 years to get all that mess straight and it's caused me to avoid driving on a toll road. We basically had to protest each and every time the truck was driven on a toll road.

Their billing is straight out fraud! I just paid not only $26 for original toll but their new debt collector charged me $30 for the toll and $80 for the fees. I do not use tolls but let my friend borrow my car and he didn’t let me know he used the tolls. I also paid one they have been chasing down for my dead Fathers toll which my Dad was actually owed a credit of the same amount. I paid it as well. If I ever get another bill I am hiring a lawyer.

So how come this hasn’t come before a judge and that judge hasn’t asked the attorney appearing before the judge to explain, if they can’t then ask for the president of the corporation to appear before the judge and advise your client to bring their toothbrush. “We pride ourselves on accuracy” yea I live in Iowa, I haven’t been in Texas for 30 years why am I getting payment demands from TXTAG? If the state legislature wants to “fix” this don’t cap late fees, that will protect the guilty as well as the innocent. Make the system work, make the resolution accessible to all and provide that the agency can only suspend registrations and licenses and block renewals only with a court verdict and write it into the bill that if the agency or the court gets it wrong they face criminal charges. This wronged individual should of been able to appear before a court, state his case, show the applicable statutes and had the case dismissed dimissed with prejudice and the toll authorities given a fine of at least 10 times the balance they were chasing and the real possibility of criminal charges should they not comply with the court’s verdict.

These crooks keep sending me false bills for 3 years. I live 300 miles from Dallas and I’ve never used the tollway system in Texas. At first, I tried to resolve it, but it became where I am employed by their company for hours and hours every month getting hung up on and yelled at and spending days trying to resolve this false bill and I’m not getting an hourly wage from their company to resolve their matters as an employee. You cannot force a person to work for your company to resolve your billing problems for hours and hours every month and not compensate them. So I ignore the bills and they have late fees piling up, and I just throw them in the trash. If I ever see a hit on my credit, I will sue them. They need to report someone stealing my tag if that’s the case and if it’s the case that they’re OCR on their camera system cannot read license plates, accurately they need to shut down their business. Either way it’s not my problem. I don’t owe the money and I don’t work for a company for free. They can kiss my grits

HCTRA transactions drop off from visibility on a rolling 3 month basis. One needs to check it every month for inaccuracies. Even with DV (Disabled Veteran) plates, I found erroneous charges for a semi-truck passing through tolls(when the plates are for a SUV) in a location that this particular vehicle had never been. When presenting this information to HCTRA, there was very little communication or transparency on their part. However, after 4-6 weeks, HCTRA did refund the erroneous charges.

The north texas toll has done billing for tx tag the past few years. What a mess they were. I hope it gets better.

My account has been disabled since the pandemic and I didn't owe them anything. When they upgraded their website before the migration I couldn't get in and now I can get in but my account doesn't work. I was one of the people that they double billed going both ways on the Beltway North near the Hardy Tollroad.

I can't believe this is all still going on this has been going on since 2001 they've had issues with the toll roads for a good while now whether it's the Mopac Expressway the 183 Expressway any toll road that was built in Austin has had troubles since it's been built to the point where a judge had waived all of the bills and told them start over some of the companies got audited three different times and yet they're still having problems make sure wonder where is all that money been going but this is started when they even built the toll roads from the beginning this is not new news this is old news and it's a shame it's still going on

IMO, all TX toll roads should honor the TXTAG and this would end all confusion.
