I just want to thank you for this video, my YT feed as of late has been full of absolute trash clickbait Starfield drama videos or ones that claim to have secret info reveals and its 2 month old news repackaged etc. This is the first Starfield content, REAL CONTENT, i've encountered since the damn demo months ago. Project Orion was a research project persued by the US Government in the 1950s and 60s into Nuclear Pulse Propulsion for Spacecraft. In short, you'd built a Spaceship on top of a giant shock absorber on top of a massive steel plate. Small atomic bombs would be shot out the backside of this craft and would detonate behind the pusher plate, accelerating the ship forward. The benefit of this system was that it would require a lot less fuel to get a payload into orbit than with a chemical rocket. The downside is that it involve setting off hundreds of small nukes to get a payload into orbit. It was cancelled due to Salt, which was probably for the better.

While mostly correct, that part of Project Orion was quickly abandoned and most of the focus was on use in space but that was nixed by the 1963 Test Ban treaty which prohibited using nukes in space.

That's one thing I really love about such games, the lore, figuring out the story and politics behind the factions and places, what shaped them into what they are. Fx. in Skyrim I think i've read every book, just to see if there's something useful in them, but mainly to get some more lore info.

I'll do you one better. we use the advanced technology we encounter with Constellation to undo the damage that has been wrought on Earth. Bring Earth back to the garden world it once was. To borrow a phrase from Mass Effect.

They clearly nuked Earth so as to avoid having to make any real content for it, because that's a whole Pandora's box and they evidently had no mandate to produce such content. It's the lazy approach to world building a space colonial near-future, honestly, but I can't blame them. Other games have gotten around it by treating Earth as a background set piece and sticking you on stations or entirely different planets, they obviously felt the best approach was to just literally nuke Earth so as to render all questions about Earth-content null and void: it's a radioactive wasteland, or whatever, you have no reason to go there, and we have no reason to make content that includes Earth in any meaningful way, because Earth's death is in the distant past so it doesn't need to be relevant to the current story or narrative at all either.

@@RosscoAW I don't see it as lazy tbh. Especially considering they are probably pushing these consoles to the limit (and the creation engine) I think it was a good idea to "blank slate" Earth and focus on the frontier. Otherwise you'd have to toss in tons of resources to create 300 years in the future advanced earth. Now they can just dump in some wrecked landmarks and call it a day. Although the thought of a terraforming quest is cool especially considering Earth by the lore video sits relatively in the middle of Human space still.

@@RosscoAW I feel like they already put so much into the lore and 300yr future-history of Starfield, that adding in guesswork for the future politics of Earth, Moon, and Mars for that same period is largely pointless. Not to mention that there's a lot of societal and political baggage that comes with involving Earth, which IMO from a creative POV kinda drags the fictitious lore down unnecessarily to reality. I've had a couple story ideas myself and I do find myself wanting to avoid making it about our Earth as it doesn't give me the blank slate I want to tell the story that I want. They probably already felt that other works like The Expanse have done that area of space and time and don't want to accidentally intrude nor copy.

Would you guys ever consider covering the Domination of the Draka? They’re an interesting(if unsettling)civilization from an alternate timeline where the British captured the dutch cape colony during the Revolutionary War, leading to it being renamed “Drakia” after Sir Francis Drake. It becomes a hotbed of slavery, hedonism, and wanton cruelty where men are used like cattle. It’s a dark timeline, but as said before, an interesting one.

Thank you for all the effort you put into making this video! I enjoyed it quite a bit. Okay, so let me say this up front. The video actually got me a bit excited for starfield although I think that might be because of the Templin institute masterful video making. And I really hope this game is good and it is a big success. But after I finished the video and started really thinking about the setting and factions described I started to feel like they were all kind of familiar and generic. Like there was so much more room for creativity but they basically went with safe options ripped straight out of popular scifi. Am I the only one that felt like that?
