Oh Peter.. The Coral List forum would be out for your blood haha. I do monitoring work and impact assessment work up in Papua New Guinea (actually referenced some of your work from long ago) and aside from where they have trashed their reefs with dynamite and drag trawling etc, their reefs in the locations I've worked are in good condition too, and despite NOAA inferred heat maps based on...questionable...data showing the whole area is on fire. Appreciate you sticking your head above the trenches for us marine ecologists that don't think the sky is about to fall.

@@reefrebels indeed, it's appreciated. The hive mind regarding climate change amongst many otherwise educated and well intentioned coral experts concerns me. Obviously some issues are important and some areas have been harmed by various mechanisms, but this idea that the whole concept of a coral ecosystem is about to disappear due to mass bleaching is crazy, especially when compared to current real life conditions.

That's funny, I thought climate denial was doing that, it's the mining sector that pumps out the most CO2, after war, and they certainly aren't getting poorer. In fact, they deliberately keep the rest of us poor, by evading taxes, using their leverage to get concessions on the massive amounts of water they use and pollute at our expense, and on a regular basis, have disastrous environmental accidents, leaving governments (meaning us, the people who actually have to pay taxes) to clean up the mess. Or close up and do the same thing, knowing that it costs to much to take them to court, and the longer they fight, the more chance whoever was effected will give up, and in the case of class actions, the more people will die, reducing any payout

Sure I read a comment from Valerie Taylor, probably a decade ago now, in which she said the reef was the same as it was when she started diving in the 1960s. Also saw somewhere that bleaching happened when sea levels where low due to which ever nino pushes the water back east. IF water temps were to rise would the reef not be expected to extend further south into currently too cool ares?

Coral reefs and all life has adapted to all kinds of change over millions of years of evolution. During glaciations sea level drops up to 130 meters, and 20,000 years ago the great barrier reef was much further out to sea as the present location was high and dry. These sea level changes are normal for coral.

I guess I wanted to explain just how incredibly beautiful the reef was at Green Island in the early 1960’s before the Crown of Thorns. I do not know what the tourist numbers are now but in 1962-63 there were 650 to 700 every day. Richard.

I lived on, and worked, Green Island, off Cairns, for a year in 1962. The huge coral reef around Green Island was totally brilliant colour, no dead coral, and the water was so clear that you could count the grains of sand at the bottom of 6 metres of water. There were thousands of fish swimming around the jetty on Green Island, mostly Trevally. Murray Views photographed my wife amongst brilliant coloured coral for a postcard that sold for the next 20 years. I went back to Green Island after the Crown of Thorns went through the Barrier Reef. There was dead coral everywhere. I was then a professional photographer and I could not find any live coral to photograph. I walked nearly half a kilometre through the coral reef to the North end of Green Island, during a King low tide, and there was not one piece of live coral. The sea had a visibility of about one and a half metres and there were no fish.I will admit that I have not been back since about 1978 and the reef could have regenerated since then.Please get your facts right, Peter.

Good to know you were a photographer there back in the day. Admittedly, the reef at Green island has deteriorated. Largely because it is the most accessible destination for tourists to the reef. It is the cheapest option and the majority of reef tourists go to Green island. The number of tourists has also increased since 60s, bigger boats, higher frequency etc. However, it is imperative to acknowledge 1. there were bouts of COTS outbreak and also recovery that followed, the reef is a highly dynamic ecosystem that is constantly changing. There are too many reef examples of low coral cover during COTS outbreak and it always recover to and many times above the baseline level. 2. GBR is about the size of Victoria, it's the size of the entire Germany. composed of over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands . You cannot base the health of the entire GBR on Green island. - we would suggest you to go on a LOB dive trip to the outer reefs and ribbon reefs . You can dive at least a few reefs in one trip and that would give you a gauge of how GBR is doing.

In 2016, the surveys show 93% of the reefs are affected by bleaching and the various 'devastating' bleaching events that followed BUT yet in 2022/23 AIMS very own data reveals that there is a record high coral cover . the record high coral cover in 2022/23 is about double the amount of coral in 2012. the sea temperature is not rising in an alarming rate , in any case corals grow faster in higher temperatures as observed in similar coral species in the coral triangle. I was gob smacked when I read that a group of "scientists" has issued a grave warning to the same area that I used to work. Same area, same time frame but totally different views. They were full of BS back then....

Sadly i don`t have the time to see the video now, but based on the headline i just have to ask a question based on facts. Since CO2 is the main building block for coral reefs, maybe we should get a little bit more CO2 in the air? That would also be good for trees, forests and all plants. At the same time it would be good for most animals with shell, like snails and so. Maybe even fabrics that can prove that they have put out more CO2 then they did the year before should get some kind of bonus? Meanwhile in the clown world people think CO2 taxation is a great thing.. lol I took the time to see the video, and had to give you a like.) 🙂
