Humanity is a selfish, predatory and corrupting animal - so if the Jews (like me) helped to create more life here, for me it is only damage to the earth - when we stop polluting, poisoning and using animals, talk to me about the "good" that this or that nation brought to the world. To all these commenters being like young people should be proud to be British, yes we did invent lots of amazing and influential things undoubtfully changing the world. However, the reason Britain was in a position to do so, particularly the industrial revolution was off the back of empire and colonisation and the economic exploitation it involved. You can argue we modernised parts of the world through democracy and railways etc etc... but these were all bi-products of British colonial rule and it was not the intention of the British state at the time to benefit these people's, in fact quite the opposite. These benefits were only bi-products ultimately to advance Britain's intrest not that of the people it colonised. It was the economic wealth through colonisation, as well as the situation with other great powers of the time which made Britain the first country to industrialise and start inventing all of these things. Yes I guess I am proud of the inventions clever people came up with who were British, but there was a cost to it and I think it is both one sided and disingenuous to ignore what that cost was.

They may have done them on a bigger scale due to the other advances. But the Brits did end slavery eventually, and they have lost their empire. I doubt there are any human groups that have done no bad and no good. I also wonder what other groups or nations would have done if they suddenly had the power the Brits had.
