Note: @16:30 in the video I say that you need to install the Charge Station Pro on a dedicated 100-amp circuit. That was the information we had at the time. Since then, I learned that you could de-rate the unit, all the way down to about 24-amps if you don't have the full 100-amp circuit to spare.

Tom, I have been looking for more detailed install info on the Charge Station Pro since I’m in Non-SunRun serviced State. I’m working with my electrician so I can future-proof my install should I want to add the SunRun HIS at a later date. There is very little information out there…no detailed Charge Station Pro install manual from Ford, only a reference to DC conductors (no conductor size info) in the online wiring schematic available via SunRun’s sales partner, and no response from SunRun’s Tech Support. I finally got a hold of Delta’s (the HIS manufacturer) and they confirmed the need for a #8 copper pair for the DC return. Any chance you could do an in-depth helpful install video for us who have to figure out our install w/o SunRun? I know Ford listens to you and I feel they need to know there customers in non-SunRun states have angst over the lack of info that SunRun shares with those who are not going to be there customers….. 😎

OK well you say not at my house but why can't I just use an AC to DC battery charger ? Really. You already know. I'm on that level 3 A/C to D/C charging from my own house using a standard battarie charger that I buy from Harbor Freight from under 100 buks probably. Level 3 stuff. So? I've explained this process to many peoples so it definatly will work. That's it done. All you do is use a battery charger for this. Now you on a level 3 charging from your house so simple. Oh and if you have solar panels at your house that makes it even easier. Dont have to convert the energy. Already comes in naturally as D/C

You're going to need the correct main line disconnect but I don't see how it can't be set up to be automatic and be current sensing on the grid side to see if power has returned. I don't think it would be instantaneous because you would need to disconnect power from the grid before turning on power from the truck.

A third party solar company has to install a grid-tie inverter system between the Ford 80 amp evse and you're house. It will transfer automatically when utility power is lost and resume charging when utility power is restored. And you can set a lower battery limit so it doesn't completely drain the truck battery.

the system could only allow for one truck to back it up. How the system works is that it would not back feed on the 100amp circuit it comes back in on another line so if you had two chargers they would be separated from the backup and the one truck wouldn't power the other one.

Good morning, Tom. Could you, potentially, use the Ford mobile connector to charge a non Ford BEV from the Lightning's Pro Power Onboard 240V outlet? For example, if an ID4 ran out of battery, could you charge the battery using the F150 Pro Power and the Ford Level 2 plug since the ID4 only comes with a Level 1 mobile charger?

@@JohnGeorgeBauerBuis Although technically feasible, the reality at this time is that the charging time for level 2 would make your rescue stay a bit long - possibly a few hours depending on EV and distance to another charging station. And putting enough juice into something like another truck will take awhile (as per Tom's video and the Ford info). More fast charging stations are needed - nothing close to the coverage we have with gas stations just yet.

Wow excellent video. I wish I had access to this video when I purchased my 3 three years ago. The F150 Lightning will be an excellent product. If Ford can deliver a quality and reliable product. The back up power that 99% of the Lightning buyers will never use is amazing. The fact that the lighting has so many Ac outlets makes it massively useful. Ford had to make some Serious compromises to get the Lightning to market in a timely fashion. This is a first generation product from Ford. The Charging speed is borderline obsolete. In 2022 you should be able to charge from 10% to 80%. In under 1/2 hour Dc fast charge and 8 hours on 240 volts. I do not believe Ford engineered in more capacity to charge. Now most people will feel the need to upgrade on the next generation 3 to 4 years from now. Ford is also not competitive with its gas trucks when it comes to towing and high mileage days. For the Next 2 years Ford will have the only mass produced electric pick up. It will take at least till late 2023 for Chevy and Tesla to get up to speed. Both the Cybertruck and the Silverado seem to have much more to offer at a similar price point. The Rivian is a smaller Truck and it will take a few years for them to put out trucks in any real numbers.

I use my 1994 F-150 for lawn service. The taller truck would blow my knees out pretty quick. And that 8 foot bed would mean I could bid on jobs that a 6 foot bed just can't do.

I think a big weakness of the Lightning is the charging speed. It could really have benefitted from 300kw charging.

I agree, Ford has a much larger battery due to the higher usage needed because of its size, then has a slower charge rate/speed than almost everyone else. Hopefully this will be corrected in the next model year.

Tom, great video! I am wiring now our new net zero energy home for the 80amp charger and home integration system. (day 2 Lightning reservation) However, our solar installer and electrician have zero info on these two Ford components. Do you have any details, specs etc. on the 80am Charge Station Pro and the Ford Home backup system? thanks!

This is a very useful video for the general consumer Tom. Great job. But as per tradition I have to nitpick you about tesla. You sort of praise ford for having that plug and play DCFC ability and mark it as an industry first. Only a half truth. Tesla was the first to do it but just with their stations. I think these truck OEM's should not be supplying 8kW rated cables with these cars. Ford, GM, Tesla should all supply at least 10kW rated cables and preferably 16kW like the old model S. These are huge batteries and the consumption of a truck is going to be around double the average EV. I understand that all standard outlets are limited to 10kW at most (nema 14-50r and 6-50r) but they could still over build the cable and limit unless the 16kW "hard wired" adapter is detected.

Thanks, Larry, I think we discussed this before - I can't remember. The distinction that I make is Tesla does not use "Plug&Charge" - it's a different technology. Yes, Tesla, has a similar tech that allows Tesla to use Tesla's proprietary network hassle-free - I love it with my Tesla. But that ONLY works on the Tesla network. Plug&Charge is designed to work across any network - so EV drivers don't need to use a specific network, as Tesla owners do. Yes, it's similar, but it IS different - Tesla does not use Plug&Charge.

@@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney if we are being honest, tesla has the majority share of DCFC stalls so although you say any network to imply more chargers, tesla still has more than the rag tag networks combined. I would call it the same idea, different name and network

Hey Tom, thanks for much for doing these videos, lots of great info. I have a really stupid question, have you ever put an amp meter on the feed side of the Pro charger and if you have what is the actual current draw at max charge. I am guessing it is not the full 80amps, but I am guessing I am wrong. Thanks again for the video

Ford’s spec sheet for the higher-end Charging Station Pro indicates the output can be adjusted to match the capacity of the home circuit. Why would you need to buy the Connect Charger at $799 if the Charging Station Pro output can be adjusted? My house only has 100 amp service so this is an important question for me.

Great compendium on EV Charging as so much of this applies to all EVs. After 4+ years of EV charging, I found it best to get the highest power equipment your home and budget will allow. Overnight charging works great and there’s no need to charge every day when driving under 50 miles each day. But you may have a change in plans with only a few hours to charge and appreciate charging at 30 miles per hr vs 15.

As usual, a very thorough technically detailed video from Tom. Nice to see that Ford has addressed all these different charging needs with a well thought selection of accessories to fit individual needs and electrical panel limitations. I think they will do very well with this electric F150, for both contractors and individual homeowners. Ford should link to this video on their Lightning web site; I don’t think their manual writers could do any better at explaining how to get the best charging setup for a new F150.

This is awesome Tom! Been following evs out on the tundra of S Dakota since early days of Tesla (sadly ddnt invest!). Anyhow, I'm first wave invite for f150 pro (I build a bit and have rental property) and actually know a fair bit about electricity! but just thought i'd figure it out when the truck gets, now I know thanks to you! The ev community seems to be full of really cool/interesting people, as my son and I were in Austin tx just before Covid got real for the fully charged live at the race track. I got really hooked there as have a few olde cars that would like to convert to ele when batteries get solid state levels of energy density and safety. Also love seeing you with the guys on inside evs (esp when Kyle isn"t interrupting ). Keep it up/ get healthy(hope that isn't long covid) and hope you are as jazzed for lightning as I. I think that truck will sell even more cybertrucks as ford will normalize lekky trucks. I'm ~ 500,000 on tesla list for 3 motor ct. ~ roger

Is the 80A Ford Charge Station Pro certified by UL or ETL or other recognized agency yet (and listed on one of their websites)? I would like to know the standards being met if the CCS connector will be used in the production version, as Sunrun says the product will have a J1772 connector that is compatible with all EVs, and the connector shown in the video does not work with Nissan Leaf / ChaDeMo vehicles.

I second all the comments - This is a great video. I have lots of experience charging my Tesla at home and on the road. Just curious, why do you think Ford uses 15%-100% for charge times for the mobile charge and Charge Station Pro? I believe that 15%-80% is a far more common measurement; most manufacturers recommend daily charging to only 80%; and that's usually the best performing part of the power curve. Are we just going to have to wait until there are Lightnings "in the wild" before we know what that 15-80 time is?
@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney
@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney 2 жыл бұрын
Many OEMs actually give the 0-100% for L1 & L2 charging because it's fairly linear until the final 5% or so. We REALLY need to get a standard that everybody uses when they describe L1, L@ and DC fast charge, so it's easier to compare EV to EV. But getting all the manufacturers to do that will be like herding cats.

as for solar panels ( 650w salara brand ) and inverters im leaning to enphase gen-8 system ( as a battery isn't needed for it to work offgrid at 10-100% load ) @ max-15to20kw size so the sunrun co /string inverter thing probably isn't for me but adding a home battery isn't decided on yet as the enphase LIF 10kw ( is i think the right size for a fixed part as the truck does the most work ) isn't happy in my garage as it gets to cold and hot for it to work correctly and i don't want to climate control it for now as for ATS/safety well that part is being a real challenge for me and isn't setup yet as the ideal layout is a 400A mains/400A or RV 30-60A generator head/plug + solar + f150+maybe small scale wind? in some combination of power

There should be a charging port inside the vehicle as well. That way you can use a battery pack to charge your vehicle even while driving or not even being in it. Can be at any location, put a battery pack on, lock and leave while it charges. Selling and re-selling charged battery packs should be a thing.
