What an honest appraisal of this car - I for one cannot understand all the hate for EVs they are just cars powered in a different way. They offer some awesome benefits but they also have their drawbacks. Let’s stop politicising the issue - if it does the job better then buy it after you try it. If not then don’t- it’s as simple as that - keep up the good work 👍

I also bought the Ford Maintenance Package from Flood Ford and with 8 years, 100k mileage it cost a little over $800 dollars just as you explained in your oil change example. Impressive numbers Mitchell. When the lightning pro debuted for $39,995 I was very excited for the truck. (Not that you could actually get one at that price). The thing that turned me off was the fact that when the govt announced the $7,500 tax credit on these trucks Ford jacked up the price so high it completely negated the tax credit benefit for the consumer. I will stick with gas until it's no longer an option. Ford doesn't care about their customers, but I think that's true of all corporations these days.
@PianoBoy99 Жыл бұрын
Have corporations ever done anything where they care about their customers more than shareholders? Ford raised the prices because they had significant demand (you know. That free market thing), and because the costs of producing it rose significant throughout the pandemic. As more production flows and the initial demand wave subsides, I guarantee you that they will lower the prices. Don't "not buy" something because a company raises the prices. You need to "not buy" it because the price/value isn't there anymore. If you would buy an electric car at 40k with a 7.5k rebate, would you buy it at 50k? 60k? Are you buying your gas truck for 32k? (or less if you factor in fuel costs).? Sticking with "gas until it is no longer an option" sounds like a political statement, not a consumer one. That's your choice of course, but don't pretend it isn't anything other than that.
@liamfirebird6922 Жыл бұрын
@PianoBoy99 my current gas truck I paid $32,498 for. I bought it new. 2wd (I don't get that much snow where I live) and it does great. Also no I won't spend 50k on any vehicle electric, gas or otherwise.
@PianoBoy99 Жыл бұрын
@@liamfirebird6922 Then that is good. You are waiting for the low-cost trucks to come on the market. Which will happen after the higher end is saturated first. No problem. Or perhaps when the used market kicks up. And that 60k lightening with 70k miles goes for 25k in the used market. That will happen eventually as well. The market just isn't where you need it to be yet. That's not a problem. I just hope it plays out the way you want it to. One thing I'm worried about is that between covid and electric vehicle transition auto makers will no longer make low-cost vehicles. They will just refuse to do it. In which case consumers like you will be in the lurch. That won't be fair, and I hope it doesn't happen.
@liamfirebird6922 Жыл бұрын
@PianoBoy99 I hope so. Charging would be much cheaper than gas! I really was psyched for the Lightning. I'm an admin worker in a factory so I get the costs going up. But Ford literally announced their price increase the same week the tax credit hit. That just rubbed me the wrong way I guess.

Excellent video. I have had my XLT Lightning since last year. 2 weeks after I got it, I took my daughter to college in Florida (from Michigan), so the cross-country thing done right away. Even the infrastructure has really improved since then, but looking forward to the Tesla network in 2024. Most of my charging is at home with my Ford Charging Station Pro that DTE helped me get hooked up. I really cannot tell if there is an increase in my electric bill. Feels like the charging cost is a wash, especially with the time-of-day plan they have me on now. I have the extended range battery and can see that I should get over 300 miles on a charge, but simply not reasonable. One thing I like that GM has done is give the expected range with something reasonable like 2.1 mi/kWh rather than expecting folks to drive so slowly (they estimated this on their Silverado EV). If you drive 500 miles of some city and some highway, you could come out to 2.0 or 2.1, but no way you're getting much better if you drive it like you stole it. I hope a standard is set like that and future vehicles get measured against it, instead of promising massive range, etc. I got the tax credit on mine last year, but that being said, comparing the loan remaining for me and the value of the truck on KBB, I am upside down a little on the loan to value after a year and a month. I don't have Blue Cruise, but I wish I did. Looks like you're enjoying it. The acceleration of the Lightning is my favorite thing. It's a rocket. I love it.

This is a great video and very informative. As a Rivian owner, I really like the extra outlets in the frunk and the fold-flat work surface. However the thumbnail and the "am I gonna sell it blah blah" are click-baitey and trite. A shame to turn away viewers so early in an otherwise informative video. Edit: on a personal note, where I live electricity is .05 cents per kWh. So I pay around $60/mo. to charge. Prior to that I was paying $200-$300 or more per month for gas. It's a huge savings, but most importantly being able to charge at home means less time driving to gas stations, waiting in line and pumping gas, which ultimately means being able to spend more time at home with my family. That is the ultimate value of an EV to me. 🙂

Personally, I cannot buy one because of range anxiety living in an apartment complex and don’t have free charging at work. Same for most people. But I understand how it works perfectly in your case since you can charge at your job all day long. Fair to say , but it remains to be seen how these things will pan out as the years roll on , the range is only fair when the vehicle is brand new , how much will the range diminish in say 4 or 5 years , or 10 or 12: years , and if the range does get too bad , how much is that gigantic battery going to cost to replace ? And as we see these units , they are either very new or not old , and I don’t see any accessories on them like roll bars , driving lights , a winch , big chunky rims and tyres , etc. All these things where very common on conventional pick ups , how is the range going to when people stop using them like precious toys.

Gas would have to cost $5.38/gal to just get 25 mpge. Consequently, I wouldn't have purchased my lightning if I had to use public chargers. The only plus would've been little to no maintenance. So bottom line. If you only drive locally and only charge at home this is a great vehicle. Someone who lives in town and only drives in town it would be even better anywhere from 3-5 mpk.
@kld7011 ай бұрын
Is little to no maintenance really the reality? Seems to me, you are saving your maintenance costs to pay them, times 3, when you replace that battery at the 8 year mark to the tune of $25,000…….,if you’re lucky enough to be able to find a replacement. In my opinion, the cost of battery replacement alone dissolves any savings on gas and maintenance. Instead of paying use and upkeep charges incrementally, like occurs with gas fill up and oil changes/maintenance, you pay them all at once when the battery reaches its end of life. In other words, the monetary savings are illusionary. Consider this: the dealer offers a gas-powered vehicle at a 30% markup but offers to pay for gas use (reasonable average) and cover all maintenance for the first 8 years (a warranty) BUT you MUST pay to have a new engine put in at that time with NO GUARNTEE as to the marked-up cost of that engine OR IF YOU WOULD EVEN BE ABLE TO FIND A REPLACEMENT ENGINE AT THAT TIME. If they want to sell these, they need to sell a replacement battery warranty plan, that guarantees you only have to pay a certain amount to replace your battery within a certain time frame. Then the consumer could make a wise, informed decision. With gasoline-powered vehicles, owners know that if they perform good maintenance on the vehicle, they can prevent most costly repairs. Unfortunately , there is no way to keep the battery from reaching its end of life. It’s a chemical component in a sealed container. There is nothing the owner can do to prevent that costly repair. In fact, normal use in cold climates will hasten end of battery life. Lithium does not like cold temperatures. Even if it’s garage-kept, there’s still times in the winter that you’re going to need to use your vehicle for commuting. And then it’s sitting in your employer’s parking lot for over eight hours. Nothing you can do about that. Lastly, I’ll add this real life antidote. I went out four summers ago and bought an electric lawnmower. I bought the top-of-the-line brand for $650, at about $200 MORE than the comparable gas-powered model. It worked fantastic for the first two seasons. By the third season, it would only hold a charge of about 40%. This last season, it wouldn’t even last 5 minutes. Meaning, at first I could mow my entire lawn in one hour on one charge. By the third season, I could only mow about 20 minutes at a time (a third of my half acre) and then I’d have to charge the battery for about an hour to an hour and a half. Not convenient. BY this season, the fourth one, the battery would only last about 5 minutes. Two swipes and done. Totally unusable. So I was forced to buy a new battery and bought at the lowest price I could find….$399. When I bought my mower, replacement batteries were selling for $149. How much was my same model mower WITH the new battery selling for? $599. Yep. Less than I paid for it four years ago, despite the inflated price on the BATTERY……Because they know they’re going to get you on the sale price of the future batteries. Or you throw out the entire mower and buy a new one. And yes, I did everything the manual said to preserve my batteries’ life expectancy. The charger was placed in my climate-controlled dining room (not particularly attractive but where I had a open outlet to keep it plugged in and also under cool conditions) and both charger and battery were stored off-season in a cabinet in that room. In other words, the only time my battery was subjected to anything but a 70% degrees ambient temperature was while actually mowing the lawn. And yet it barely lasted 4 years. If I add my initial purchase cost of $650 to the battery replacement cost of $399, I can expected to get 8 years use for just over $1000. My old Craftsman (approximately $300) gas mower lasted 15 years with routine maintenance and about 6 gallons of gas per season. So the savings to change to electric, if any, were minimal. The only viable reasons to go electric-powered anything is pollution reduction and ease of use. Financial, it’s a wash or small loss. If they truly want it the electrical conversion of power in this country to be readily accepted by the consumer and therefore a success, the government could step in and require these manufacturers to guarantee battery replacements at a cost relative to what they were when the consumer purchased the product. Gas prices fluctuate, but not more than double in a four year period. Consumers want dependability and stability in the products they purchase. Provide that, then adoption of electrical vehicles will be much slower.

Correction: **Fail to provide that, and the adoption of electric vehicles will be much slower.

True. These vehicles certainly aren't for everyone. I'm actually happy about that because our electrical grid simply isn't ready for that. And if I hadn't had 2 vehicles to trade in on my lightning platinum, I probably wouldn't have been able to afford it. Being 74 and single my lightning replaces my 2018 prius that I normally drove and my 2014 F150 that I need to haul and tow things. Those 2 got my price down to about $50k and didn't have to pay sales tax on the trades. Perfect truck for me local use only charge at home only. Beats the 10 mpg I got with my F150 and even beats the 50+ mpg I got with my prius. I have no complaints about range ever.

Great video! Like you, once I experienced an EV, it’s like you’d have to be crazy to go back to a gas vehicle. It’s actually MORE convenient than having a gas car/truck because you leave your house every day with a full tank and hardly ever have to stop to fill up (only on road trips), and hardly ANY maintenance. I’ve been driving Tesla’s for 10 years now. Once the F-150 Lightning comes with the NACS charger built-in, I’ll be buying one. Also, it would be nice to know what the rear, lockable, tonneau (?) cover costs? One other thing: when is there going to be a convertible EV? Ford should make either a Mustang or Thunderbird convertible EV. That’s one thing I miss, having had a 2-door Mercedes hard-top convertible awhile back. It was turbo-charged, too, so it would leave most cars in the dust. Man, I loved that car, especially driving around in the country in the summertime!

So a short synapses of what I have to say is that in upstate New York it's way too cold and electricity rates are way too high. We pay about 38 cents a kilo watch would basically put that vehicle on par and mean that it's so cold up here. We would actually be getting worse. Electric mileage than a gasoline bid. You're right, not every vehicle is right for every single person. But for the most part, fifty percent of the country would find that vehicle a boat anchor

Did you factor in all the costs of mining all the materials it takes to build the truck? What about factoring in the cost of the environmental impact of the battery after it dies? Or how about the cost of replacing the battery with a fresh one? What about the cost to charge the battery if everyone owned one? Since the grid couldn't handle such demand, I'm sure the price to charge would be MUCH higher.

My advice if you do a lot of long-distance diving is to buy the extended range battery as you will run into a lot of broken chargers. It will be great once the Tesla chargers are available to non Tesla's as I believe their network is better cared for and therefore more reliable. Other than that, it's a great truck. Does 0-60mph in 4 sec. Also has lots of power to pull out vehicles icing a charger. Just make sure you carry a good tow rope because there are plenty of brain-damaged people out there who think they need to be idiots on a daily basis.

I understand when people are saying you save so much money on gas and oil however you’re gonna feel the cost when you’ve had that truck for a couple of years and then the battery starts failing once you have to start replacing the cells in the truck now that’s gonna shoot up the cost on top of it. You need to go to a specific Technician that is trained in electrical vehicles so you know that your truck is going to come out of the shop in one piece. Another thing is yes you’re saving a bunch of money in gas. However, these electrical vehicles that are pushed on us are very expensive upfront as well. What they should do is make an electrical vehicle that is The cost of an regular sedan so that people can try it out and once they see how useful it is, and how affordable it is, and how much money they’re saving then once the car crap out they can go and possibly buy a more expensive model of an electrical vehicle. Most of us don’t spend on vehicle that we don’t even know if we’re gonna like it as much with all the footage pushed around about EV cars catching on fire EV cars bringing a house on fire cars locking their family inside updating. it’s a very expensive mistake.
