UPDATE: GM had originally told me all Bolt EVs and EUVs would need the update to be Supercharger compatible. However, they just reached out to tell me that was incorrect. Tom, congratulations on earning this well-deserved scoop. It shows your hard-earned influence in the world of charging. With that in mind, it would be a real service if you could do a demo video to show ways not to block two charging spots at SCs, eg.: park (if possible) to the right of the last right-most stall; use one of the side-mounted stalls even if you stick out a little; and 3 choose a stall next to another non-Tesla vehicle. It is interesting to note that Tesla owners tend to choose every other stall as they fill up (this goes back to the early days with v2 sites that halved the charging power of occupied adjacent stalls). If six Teslas are parked in a 12-stall site and leaving one space between each, no vehicle with a port in the “wrong” position will be able to charge. It’s going to be an interesting new world out there.

I stopped to use an electrify America charger once thinking it was a free charger, but was shocked to see how expensive they were for how slow the charging was. $0.59/kwh for 150W is a joke, like I know that it's a monthly subscription for non-Tesla owners to use the superchargers, but it's hard to beat the $0.35/kwh charging at up to 250W. The abundant amount of superchargers is a huge plus too if you need them. I'm fortunate enough to have charging accessible at home, so I've only used a supercharger 4 times. Thanks Tom, it is sad that GM is charging for the adapter, at least I used my GM Rewards points to pay for it, so it cost me eighteen dollars in taxes only. I will pick from the dealer this week, I need to do the first-year service anyway to rotate tires on my Blazer EV, it is hard to believe it is a year old already.

Awesome video Tom. Thanks for the step-by-step. You order the adapter to the app. Not the website. Otherwise, flawless

Great news Tom, but my assumption is that your Equinox should charge to its max as Tesla does not have that low maximum current that EA has on the 150KW dispensers, would make interesting video for GM owners, especially Chev Silverado EV.

Its about time!!! One question: Why doesn't GM have Plug 'n Charge like Ford and Rivian have? What did GM/Tesla screw up? And if no Plug 'n Charge, why did GM take this long? I would have thought the Plug 'n Charge would have been the long pole in gaining access.
@theflew2 ай бұрын
GM has Plug'n charge with other charging companies. Remember, GM has a lot more EVs on the road than Ford and Rivian, given the Bolt is also included. So this might have been more of a logistics issue with 300k+ vehicles being added. At the very least, it's integrated into the GM's app, so there's no need to give Tesla any information directly.

I can confirm that Tesla supercharger stations are showing up directly on the myCadillac app, I expect it is the same for other GM cars.
@junehanzawa51652 ай бұрын
@theflew Logistics is correct. The concern has been with the large amount of slow charging GM's out there, such as the 55kW max Bolts. There are no Fords or Rivians that charge below 150kW at their maximum speeds. Which is why they got the access so much sooner. With SC providing the full 500amps, the Equinox should charge at it's 150kW max rather than that 110kW max it's been getting on the 150Kw chargers due to it's unbelievably low voltage. That was another delay, Tesla getting GM to at least have the Equinox accept the full 500amps before they gave out their access.

@benroberts22222 ай бұрын
As a former software developer I suspect a lot of the delay was GM wanting to control the front end charging experience through infotainment and their apps. Requires a lot of new code and interfacing with Tesla's charger control and payment backends, all of which needs extensive testing for edge cases. Other manufacturers let the Tesla app handle the charge session (which it already did for every Tesla owner), so the only new work was for Tesla to identify the vehicle connected to the charger. It may require a web service call back to the manufacturer for authorization but that would be the hardest part, a lot fewer things to go wrong there

Can I just say that manual door on the Equinox is so much better than the obnoxious motorized one on the Blazer EV?

I got mine and $60 cheaper than at Amazon because of the code and no sales tax. (A2Z Typhoon Pro)

Was funny seeing this video during my lunch break after I'd seen the splash page info about this on the GM internal homepage. We have an Equinox EV and I'm hoping to pickup my Model 3 in a few days, so having this adapter will be great. It is $225 and the part number is 85090442 and looks like the one from Tesla in the video.

To be clear, only 60% of the Tesla network SITES support NACS. It is not just the V2s that are Tesla only, even 40% of the brand new sites are reserved for Tesla only, even on the new hardware. Connector count is a spec used to exaggerate the amount of the network that is open. It is critical to check the Tesla app when route planning to ensure that you don't get stranded at one of the Tesla only sites. ABRP also allows you to filter for NACS. independent of Tesla. This confusion has stranded many EV drivers.

GM's app (garbage that it is...) allows you to search for compatible nacs locations.

I know I am not thinking if you bought a Tesla you wouldn't have had to wait and can charge any superchargers. Welcome to the network.

The sites need to have clear and obvious signage.
@chriswestenskow52022 ай бұрын
@@cypvh74 I don’t disagree, but in many places, by the time you’ve arrived at a charger planning to charge, it’s way too late to find out it is not compatible. I think Tesla also likes to be able to make changes to NACS support without physically changing signage at the site

Hi Tom, Your reviews are great and fun. Can you also review EV charger pedestal stands?
@oleandrummer10 күн бұрын
Very important note. GM makes it abundantly clear when you set up your Tesla charging on the my Chevy app that if you use a 3rd party adapter you VOID your battery warranty. Stick with the official adapter

V2 chargers have the silver ring on the cable near the connector. Primm NV and Baker CA still has both. Make sure you drive through the lot and find the chargers with no silver ring.

We just got some V4 Superchargers opened up in Rockaway (not the mall), if you wanted to see what kind of charging speeds you can pull from the latest units. (We also just got some in Harrison/Kearny but idk if they’re live yet)

Tom, you didn't record or talk about the most important aspects. What kw charging speed is the supercharger delivering to the Equinox?? Is the 10% to 80% charging time faster in Supercharger vs Electrify America? Does the car and the app shows the charging speed in kw? Does the car screen show the charging cost, or is it only on the app? ($ per kwh, and total cost)
