What I love about horror games with a retro-style is that it's really up to your imagination to interpret what the textures would realistically look like. Just looking at realistic gore and viscera for a long time just gets dull, but something that makes you think of what it could actually be is much more horrifying. The scariest things in life can be those that you think of yourself.

David Rodríguez Rodríguez: This. Never understood people's obsession with the playable teaser.
@cole59535 жыл бұрын
@David Rodríguez Rodríguez I feel like neither of you understood it then. PT was just a creative horror game that lead to a tease for a new silent Hill game in the works. They even said the actual game (silent hills) wouldn't play like PT as it was just a fun creative project the team made to promote the game. The game didnt "flop" pt was massively popular and the hype was real, the game was cancelled because konami has gone insane and would rather invest in gambling machines.
@cole59535 жыл бұрын
@David Rodríguez Rodríguez that isn't true. Silent hills was a hype machine, especially after having kojima on the project. Silent hill had a loyal and large enough audience to keep the series around. The problem was konami "trying new things" by changing the formula and making shitty games. Most of the passionate team members of team silent left after silent hill 3. After that, it became a shit show of western dev's trying to appease broader nonexistent audiences at the behest of konami. If you keep betraying your audience, you eventually won't have one.

In the apocalypse, you should keep the lights off (if the grid is down and you are off grid) as any light, however small, can serve as a beacon to attract unwanted people. Such light can be seen from 20+ miles away on a clear night and unobstructed landscape. If the grid is still up and working, keep the lights in its initial state - don't switch it on or off - people can spot this change and know someone is there. If the light flickers then let it flicker. In both cases - either the power grid is up or down - you should remain quiet, the name of the game is to not let your presence known.

I can't even begin to stress how perfectly brilliant this game's simple, but concise introduction is! It encapsulates everything there is to know about this game, in tone and mood. "From up here, the world looks almost normal." And it really does too, but that single word 'almost' cuts through any human expectation/desire of normality. Just the fact that the protagonist would insist oddities, when the world appears so plain, makes us weary. So the seeds of fear have been planted, and the game's world already begins to make you feel a tad uneasy. "But it's not safe to go out there anymore." Well...why isn't it safe to go out anymore? This sentence builds up intrigue in what the circumstances are, as questions start forming. The quick change in atmosphere from the previous line really puts you into a state of urgency. Now, things aren't just off...you're in perpetual danger. "And I only have 6 bullets left." The perfect conclusion. Why does the protagonist tell us this, so immediately? We didn't even get clarification of a gun, beforehand. It's sharp, it instantly communicates the sense of survival, and appropriately supports the previous sentence. All 3 sentences come together at this point to heighten the tension, one building off the other. It is a gloriously devious set up that pulled me in *immediately.* It also really helps that the intro is a story in itself, entailing basically everything about the game while just being a haunting poem.

I personally interpret this game as being about social isolation and alienation from a world that - as time goes on - changes more and more as time goes on until it stops bearing any resemblance to what you once knew it as. This change doesn't necessarily have to be bad though. The protagonist perceives it as negative and scary, but ultimately succumbs to it and embraces it, ending the game. The world changes, that's just a fact of life. Trying to cling to one place is ultimately fruitless and it's through moving forward that we can actually make a difference, whether that'd be in our lives or in the world as a whole. I feel it could've delved a bit more into those ideas though. Most of that analysis I made is kinda sub-textual, the imagery is broad enough for a lot of different interpretations to be made. Some stuff in particular like the static-y TV or the featureless human shape have become pretty overused in horror media(though it's not like their use here is out of place or anything). Maybe more stuff could've happened in the apartment. For example, the protagonist's reflection in the mirror could have started becoming more and more grotesque-looking as even he is invariably influenced by the invisible "corrupting" forces. Someone in the comments suggested adding the ability to use the gun on yourself, that could be a possible alternative ending to the assimilation with the new world. Overall, it's a pretty neat-looking game that could've maybe used some more time in the oven. Not that developers always have the time/resources/patience to see every project they embark on polished to perfection, of course. Good luck to the devs in their future endeavors.
@mutantfreak485 жыл бұрын
Also, some notes on the more technical aspects. Visually the game does a decent enough job at emulating a retro low-poly look, which contributes to the atmosphere of dissociation with reality quite well, but some stuff like the lighting are maybe a bit too advanced and could take a person out of the mood a bit(might be just me though). The inability to look up and down is a bit odd. That feature(or lack thereof) comes from early FPS games like Doom, Duke Nukem and so on, which come from an era close to the one this game is trying to evoke. However, those games worked that way because they weren't actually 3D - they still used 2D sprites and were designed to give a sense of a fully-rendered 3-dimensional space when it was all actually a glorified top-down shooter. This game is quite clearly 3D though, so I'm not sure why it's here. Thematically it could be said that it adds to the sense that the changes happening in the world being so grand and out-of-scope for the player character to comprehend that they literally can't even fully perceive the environment around them and that, along with the clunky controls, it adds to the alienation but on a pure mechanical level it's just kinda odd(It might just also be a quirk of the engine. The game was apparently made with Godot and I've never actually heard of this engine before.). Also the sound design is really good. No criticism there, it works perfectly with the rest of the game. Quite creepy sounding and fits with the lo-fi vibe very well.

I've seen this video when it first came out, and this game has been in the back of my mind ever since. I did not catch the PS1 era (they were pretty much obsolete by the time I was 3-4), so it's not that seeing these retro, pixelated, repulsive graphics strikes a nostalgic chord in me. But it has to do with its atmosphere, and the PS1 graphics do a great job at complementing the fever dream-like world and state of the protagonist. Such a short experience, yet one I still think about 4 years later, while some of the more 'polished' video games of recent times (most AAAs, specifically) fail to make a day-long impression on me. To still be in my mind after 4 years, to me this game has reached the pinnacle of what a game, a story, a piece of media should be. For this reason, I got the game for myself a few days ago and donated a small sum to its developer, who should be immensely proud of themselves and their creation.

I love the atmosphere in this as well as the setting: a hopeless young man who's the only living person left, and is slowly being tempted to come out of his apartment and join everyone else in the growing structure (this is implied by how he says "I can see the truth now" at the end). I love it. Edit: initially wrote "live" instead of "love" at the start, corrected now.

The game gives you a gun but there’s never a time where you’re actually ‘supposed’ to use it. It’s like, “You’re so fucking powerless, here, take this, for all the good it will do you [none!]”.

Wow. This one really got me. I just love the vibe so much. You know, you really feel like it's the end of the world. No light outside, no music, almost no sound. Everything seems so empty and depressing. Do you guys know movies or games like this ?

Pretty cool. I love how the decay on surfaces looks. I've seen something like that before but I don't remember where. The structure and entities remind me of the Interface youtube series, was any inspiration taken from there?

Very cool how you're constantly dragged towards the front door, the urge to go outside becoming more and more irresistible.
@reginaldcz63325 жыл бұрын
By the way did anybody try to resist the urge in the end of game to go out, when the protagonist starts slowly going towards exit door , if there anything more happens? Because at least in gaming log that phase is called "Endgame".

I think I finally pieced together the meaning of the game. I definitely think its an expression of how television and computers have helped replace human interaction to the point even if one wishes to break out of it for a more based lifestyle...everyone else is still controlled by the machine therefore it basically infects you. You have no choice. Also maybe something to do with spying and orweillan stuff with the television. I mean.. The descriptions of the plants and how the protag looks, also the giant growth being some tv growing out like a vine plant into every home... Scary.

I hate the fact that you can't close the doors or windows after you opened it. Other than that he has a nice apartment to live. A bedroom, a bathroom, a kitchen, a living room and 2 hallways. Edit: nvm, you can... at least that gave me comfort and privacy. Edit2: why does the rooms and hallways get dark sometimes (e.g. 0:01:53) and gets slightly brighter at other times (e.g. 0:06:15)? This could lead to a new video game concept: survival horror that includes prepping (food, water, ammo) as well as creepy elements. Basically Subnautica meets Resident Evil.

This reminds me of the one movie The pulse, The scene where that one dude had himself locked in his apartment using red tape to block all cracks that could be entry’s etc.
