A quick guide on building a static grass applicator.
This is part one, the body. In part one I’ll show you exactly how I make the main structure of the static grass applicator and in part two I’ll go through the specific wiring to complete the final product.
This applicator work very well on all the static grass brands I've tested, woodland scenics works very well and mininature grasses also perform quite well. It’s great for adding realism to your model railroad or if you do any other sorts of scenery like war gaming, you will find this static grass applicator very useful. And it’s not very expensive! In total I spent about $35 on the materials.
If you’re interested in going to part two click on the following link or you can click the link at the end of the video.
• Static Grass Applicato...
Here is a list of materials:
50mm PVC pipe
50mm PVC pipe coupler
Container with press on or clip on lid
Small piece of pine wood (About 3cm wide)
Black wire 18 gauge
Red wire 18 gauge
DPDT switch
Alligator clip
Small wood screws
Metal wire mesh (from sifter)
Small connector plugs
Shrink tube
Negative ion generator (I got mine from Oatley Electronics)
And here are tools used in the construction:
Drill and various drill bits
Soldering iron and solder
Two part epoxy
PVC primer and glue
Scissors
Hobby knife
Pen and marker
Sand paper
Screwdriver
Ruler
Saw or circular power saw
Thanks for watching, hope you found some useful information. Feel free to share the video and if you’re not already feel free to subscribe and comment.
Happy railroading,
Cheers

I made one of these a couple of years ago. I use it all the time, and its still going strong. Luke's instructions were easy to follow with no waffling on about things you don't need to know as many others do.so much cheaper than comecialy available units,and fun to make.

I've already commented in the "Electronics" video section, but I just wanted to say again that this is the best tutorial and best constructed home built static grass applicator I've seen yet... For those that live in the US and would like to build this unit... The Negative Ion Generator that Luke uses from Oatley Electronics is the most powerful 12VDC unit I've found to date and Oatley has no problem shipping to the US ($14AUD). On our end, there's not issues with Customs at all. I've ordered 6 of the generators (2 at a time, X 3) with no issues at all... Again... Great tutorial Luke. The next time I build one for a friend, I'll be using your techniques.

Scissors - omg when I was a kid I remember my mum going out of her mind if she saw me with her scissors and paper!!!! Now I’m 43 and have been a sewing machinist since I was 17 ... I get why she went so mental ! My children have heard the same all their lives now too! Having said that tho I have a LOT of scissors for different job.... also I reckon I’d pinch the hubby’s tin snips and try those on the metal mesh 😂 😂

Doyle Souders ,, thanks mate, yeah I probably should've mentioned that in the video. I'm about to release an updated version of making the static grass applicator in about 2 weeks, the main differences are I used a slightly smaller container (same brand) and I added a dual power supply so it can be powered with a 9 volt battery or the wall socket. Having a battery makes it great for the hard to reach jobs. Cheers Luke

I am just about to start making mine, but I have a query. In your list of materials you state 50mm PVC pipe and coupler, yet on the video at the start where you have all material, tools, etc, lined up, the pipe is 40mm, and you also mention 50mm when marking the container for hole cutting. I think the 40mm is easier for handling, so I take it size doesn't matter. Also what was the size of the timber for mounting the negative ion generator. I have a piece that is 30mm x 12mm. Hoping to hear from you soon. ...... Ian

Hello, it looks great and does the work perfect. I have built grass applicator from rechargeable "bug zapper" but it doesn't work good. I would like to built another one similar to yours, but I need your advice. I have checked ebay and I can buy only 12V Negative ion generator that gives 9000V. It is less than IONB2 with 15kV. Do you think 9kV will be eought? or I should look for higher voltage?
@LukeTowan
@LukeTowan 8 жыл бұрын
+Robert D I think 9000V will be ok, I got a message from someone who made a similar one with a negative ion generator from China, I really like the one from Oatley Electronics because it's made specifically for making a static grass applicator. However the bug zapper ones will be a similar voltage to 9000V so it might not be a whole lot better? If it was me I'd get the higher voltage one. Hope that helps, if you have the money and time it might be worth experimenting and giving the 9000v one a go. Cheers Luke

Great video Luke, But I have a Question about the size of PVC pipe. You said in the video 50mm pipe which here in the states would be 2 inches. But the pipe in the video looked like it was marked 40mm. that would be 1-1/2 inches here. I don't want to have something too big if I can help it. So... 40mm or 50mm? Thanks again for a great video!
@LukeTowan
@LukeTowan 7 жыл бұрын
Just went and measured it and it's definitely 50mm however I have since made other static grass applicators and on the newer model I use 43mm pipe and the negative ion generator fit snugly. Any size can be used as long as the generator that you use can fit inside the pipe. Cheers 😀

Thanks for the quick reply Luke! But one another question about the output of the power supply. In the video I noticed the following of the power supply Input is 100-240v - 50/60 Hz 0.4a output is 12v=1.5a On the output side.. can it be higher? say 2.a or 3a? I don't want to fry this thing. I am not good in electronics but I can follow instructions! which is what I am doing in your video! So I don't want to mess this thing up. IONB2 negative ion generator module is on its way from oatley electronics.
@LukeTowan
@LukeTowan 7 жыл бұрын
They only thing you need to look out for is voltage, as long as you don't go over 12 volts you'll be fine. The amps can be anything, I've used they grass applicator with a .4 amp supply ad well as a2 amp supply... if the rated amperage of the power supply is too low then you'll burn out the power supply first before it damages the ion generator. Cheers 😉

@LukeTowan
@LukeTowan 8 жыл бұрын
+Ellison Wonderland Films I find epoxy to be stronger and more durable, you could probably get away with regular construction glue but I'm not sure how long lasting it would be? Silicon might work as well and would be durable as well as flexible. Cheers Luke.

+Luke Towan, I enjoy your videos and have tried some of your projects. I use flex track to mask my tracks. Flip the track over and use 1", 1-1/2", and 2" masking tape on the bottom, with the track upside down, lay it over the existing track, offsetting it to "interlock" the 2 tracks. I vary the tape width for different coverages or use 2 overlapped tape strips for wider coverage. It would be easier if I had a video, BUT, I don't do videos.

Reading through the comments, there's a lot of questions about the negative ion generator. If you live in the United States and have concerns about ordering from Australia (you shouldn't), there's a retailer in New Hampshire that sells higher power Negative Ion generators. Here's a link to the 30KV unit: www.amazing1.com/products/negative-ion-generator-12vdc-input-30kv-output.html Commercial Flocking units use upwards of 40-75kV, so there shouldn't be any major concern about safety with a 30kV unit. These units are not cheap, but they are the highest power units that I can find this side of complete commercial units. I purchased 5 of them in one shot to get bulk pricing, as I build these for modeling friends from time to time. Canisters, similar to what Luke uses for his unit can be purchased at Bed, Bath and Beyond. It's made by Sistema and are about $7 each. I prefer these over others like them, because the clips that keep the top on the canister are separate items, which will not fatigue and break off over time. Again, Great videos Luke... Very informative and if you follow along, step by step, you get pretty close to the same results! Jeff

Some people have used the ones from eBay (China) but I haven't tried them?

Beware of the costs involved. I went to my local hardware store and asked for 18" of PVC thinking it would cost about $5, not realizing that it was $14.49 per foot. The pipe and the coupler cost me $24 USD. An actual flocking machine cup like the one shown in this video costs $55 USD on ebay.

Seriously?! Something isn't right there. Try a different store. Here in Australia (where everything is more expensive than the US) 2" PVC is $2.15 per foot and the coupler to suit is $1.40. Google tells me that's US$2.50 at current exchange rates.

I may not be understanding electricity enough, but I wonder if an applicator could be made from a cheap torch? It has a switch already built in.

Hello, I am from Germany. I've searched on ebay by negative ion generator , but I find just one with four cables , is that right? Excuse my english.👍thx
@LukeTowan

+DaviRelli Channel The four wire ones should work but I'm not sure if they are as good, I haven't personally tried them and apparently you can chop off the extra high voltage output wire? The one I bought from Oatley Electronics is specifically designed for making static grass applicators and you will definitely get great results with that one. Hope that helps a little. Cheers Luke.

+DaviRelli Channel Hi, check my question to Luke. I have found 3 wires generator, but the one with maximum 9kV output. IONB2 generates 15kV so, much higher voltage. It looks IONB2 is not possible to buy, or have you managed to?

What the most asked question here is the unit is called : IONB2 NEGATIVE ION GENERATOR MODULE . Go to oatleyelectronics.com//product_info.php?products_id=915 They are In NSW ( new state of weirdos ) They Sell $14 AUD , ship for another $12AUD which equals about $19USD depending on the exchange rate And I would recommend drilling the holes @ 6.15min ,in the pipe before fitting the container . Stormwater PVC can fracture easier than Electrical or communications 50mm the diameter is stronger when drilling into it . To get them try an electrical trade shop

I'm not sure what components you're using but if you are using a cheap negative ion generator from china then your applicator won't work as good as the one I show in the video. I used a high quality negative ion generator from Oatley Electronics specifically designed for making grass applicators.
