When the press told Blue Beetle they hadn't seen him in awhile, they're confusing him with the previous Blue Beetle, Ted Kord. No one knows Ted is dead, just that he hasn't been around. Meanwhile, Jaime has been on the covert team. This is his coming out party, so to speak. And as you can see, it's because of Reach influence. BTW, they referenced this in an earlier episode, when Beetle and Superboy fought Ugly Manheim's reanimated titan.

And now you’ve met the Super Friends. With the exception of Static Shock, the kids are modern versions the original characters created for Super Friends. Tye is Apache Chief Ed Dorado is El Dorado Asami is Samurai Static replaces Black Vulcan in the lineup This show loves to reference the Super Friends, which is pretty cool

Probably something that Greg Weismann conceived for events between seasons; the comic tie-in was canned so a lot of things weren’t shown that could’ve been.
