I read that Static creator Dwayne McDuffie was invited to a comic convention in Brazil a few years back. When he arrived, he saw more cosplayers of Static than anyone else. Tickets were sold out to hear him talk about his creation. He was so shocked and overwhelmed to find out how huge the fan base was for his work he broke down and cried.

Hearing about great shows like Static and I think Teen Titans getting canceled originally because of the lack of toy sales really make me angry. I remember being a kid back then and I looked for Static toys and never saw them in the store to buy. If they even made toys for some of the shows back then they weren't readily available for purchase. Honestly I don't even remember commercials for Static toys.

@speake77777773 күн бұрын
There was actually a video game that got scrapped before release. Beta versions of the ROM used to exist online
@MadameTamma3 күн бұрын
The reason for their cancellation is a lot dumber than just toy sales if you believe what Paul Dini had to say about it in that IGN article that came out a few years ago. According to what he said in the article, a lot of Superhero cartoons get cancelled too early often when the studios run analytics and discover that the ratio between boy viewers and girl viewers swings more in the direction of a girl fan base. They want girls to watch their shows, but only if there's MORE boys than girls in the audience. This is because toys made for boys (think action figures), and toys made for girls (things like Plushies) are different, so if they're banking on having a more boys audience then the marketing team will focus on making more boys toys from the get go. If it's discovered that there are more girls who like it, then they would feel like they'd have to scrap their current toy line and marketing all together and do a shift towards girls, and don't think it's worth the trouble to do so. Also shows made for girls come with a stigma, and there are some writers that don't want that. So they'd rather not continue at all rather than have to make what would then be marketed as a "girls show", even if the shows themselves come across as pretty gender neutral.
@BaithNa3 күн бұрын
You're thinking of Young Justice. Teen Titans had like 5 seasons and the toys sales were so good it got a spin off that has lasted 15+ years now.

Taken in context we can assume it wasn't that children and parents weren't buying static shock merchandise, it was just that manufacturers and toy stores weren't. I think the reason one may find this show refreshing now is that while it does contain a little bit of naivete due to being a kids show it contains a very real lesson about always lending a hand to help others regardless of belief. An original character that preaches and embodies the neccesity of community in a world where the most vocal and the media is insistent on people placing themselves in silos when in truth that is the last thing most want in this world.
@Grizabeebles4 күн бұрын
In some ways it feels like the Arrowverse in general (but especially Flash and Black Lightning) were pushing back against the optimism of Static Shock decades later. The idea of Virgil's mom recieving a direct warning the night she dies and then going out anyway *because its the right thing to do* seems to only come up as a tragic flaw rather than a high ideal.
@leithaziz27163 күн бұрын
I think the lesson we struggle the most to believe in is that there's worth in ideals and integrity. The world doesn't have to reward you for your kindness (nowadays, people might even demean you or call you stupid), but you are not wrong to stick to how you value life. I think this is why characters like Superman and Batman have kept their appeal for so long. A story might not be realistic, but maybe there's still wisdom to be found in it if you perceive it as an ideal of how things should be. Technically none of this is real, but it leaves an impact, and that's gotta count for something.

Sooo a couple things - it's so interesting how the mom stuff turned out. When i was a kid in the early 2000s ,dwayne mcduffie was online alot. I got his aim name and i used to message him after school online while i was drawing. He was super accessible and open. He regretted killing the mom off, since she was alive in the comics. I also think he regretted it because of the stereotype of single parent black families. But as a kid that was shocking to me to hear but as an adult..i totally get why he felt that way now. - its funny how much of a positive light static and Virgil was in people's lives in the cartoon, in the comics he wasnt as positive. They always dealt with hard issues but that's not always how Virgil dealt with them. In the comics Richie was gay and static at first couldn't understand. Him and his friends were throwing gay slurs, he didn't realize how much that just Richie and grew to change his ways. That comic came out in like 96/97... very much something that can still be of value today.

Even though Static was canceled, the ending made sense. 99% of the Bang Babies lost their powers. The last Bang Babies standing were Virgil, Ritchie and that Abomination (Hotstreak & Ebon). If there was a season 5, the criminals would be normal, possibly equipped with futuristic weapons (maybe Intergang), and the Abomination plotting against Static and Gear every now & then. Season 4 was a perfect conclusion. However, I wish we got to see Static(Virgil of the present) in the JLU. We got that cowboy, the knight, and that guy who piloted a mecha, whose names I can't remember. Even the Creeper was a JLU member. Static should've been in the JLU.

My love of comics (and all things nerdy) stem from 2 sources: _Static Shock_ & my Dad (who I also call "Pops" like Virgil did. This is unintentional tho.😅) In 3rd grade (so maybe around 2001) I remember begging my Mom for a blue bathrobe, so I could "suit up" with Virgil. Every Saturday morning @ 10AM, you wouldn't have to look for me, because I was locked in while Static was on. He was one of the first superheroes I can recall seeing on TV that I could relate to. His skin looked like mine. And as a black child living in the inner city, he faced issues that I would later face as I got older. He was intelligent & resourceful (bro made his first superhero fit out of sweatpants, a T-shirt, sneakers and bathrobe & STILL had the drip). And if I remember correctly, he got the pass from Batman. If Batman says you're solid, then you're solid. Speaking of issues, this show was not afraid to lean into the hard topics & address it in a medium where an 8 year old could understand it, and not feel like he was being talked down to. They focused on things that divide us, and showed us a path to unity. It's not the problem that's the problem. It's how we as a society approach finding a solution that's a problem. I could go on about the impact this show had on my earlier formative years. My apologies for the long comment, but that's how much I loved this show even 20 years later. Put some respect on his name: Virgil Oved Hawkins⚡

Static has one of my favorite superhero origins. He is given the option to join a gang, receive protection and possible revenge from his bully and almost takes it, but once confronted with what he would have to do, his upbringing kicks in. He was raised by a family that puts a lot of emphasis on helping the community but also knowing full well the dangerous of their environment, like the gangs they share their streets with. So he goes into mature, responsible mode and that leads to a string of correct decisions. (What to do with the gun, where he should go, how to get out of there, etc.) and that informs how he handles dangerous situations as a superhero going forward. Making sure people in need get to where they need to be. He's a kind hearted kid with streets smarts.

Implicit, i can see why the toy sales fell through. It has two core powered heroes. A lot of civilians. Thats harder to market than buying a hundred kenner storm troopers of each type and have them stand round like they are on the death star wsiting for a visit from the Emperor. I suggest creating a scifi setting. A bulky spaceship with ten crew. And ti can transform into the central hub for a space station. This space station is a construction platform for a stanford torus.. that provides you with a toy set that can be expanded on slowly as the torus is 3-D printed. That provides you with a space station work crew who assemble a space station over time. And they can mine a nearby asteroid where an alien plant grows- turning out to be sentient. And a few word droids, and crew in uniform or space suits.

A trend that will never get old to me is when u have time travel episodes like this and the main character gets to see someone that haven't seen in a long time due to their heroic demise, but even when telling them what happened, they still choose to go out a hero not for the glory but because its the right thing to do which helps the main character in more ways in one

Static shock was one of my favorite shows growing up. I actually heard that it was canceled because WB wouldn’t push for companies to make merch and toys not just lack of sales.

Virgil always had that thing I wanted more than super powers in how his father was.

In the 2000’s i watched it on the Saturday cartoon lineup on the CW. You had to wake up earlier enough to watch all your favorites like pokemon, yugioh, justice league, sabrina the teenage witch, and static shock. There was no internet to watch them, just on Saturday morning my guy

I now know that I was definitely spoilt by being there when this was airing. Was one of my favourite shows as a kid

0:26 I caught the reruns and stuff like that and then a couple years ago I rewatched the entire series on KZbin cuz someone had the entire series segmented into like 5 minute parts for each episode so it was a fucking slog to get through but it was pretty worth it it's probably easier to find and stream now I like that it was a part of the DCAU I also like they incorporated the other characters from Justice League and all that into episodes and crossovers I wish the comics would do that more and then corporate static into the main universe take this version of static and put him into the main DC universe write him how he is in the show and you'll be good or just make a continuation comic of the show

Static Shock was taken from us too soon, but its impact always remains.

This was one of my favorite shows when it originally aired. One of the things that always stood out to me was that the hero was written as a person first, and a superhero second. He is not a flat archetype like that Batman, or the Teen Titans. Virgil has its own hopes and dreams, and they are different from the goals that Static pursues he was one of the only superheroes I can think of from that era that actually managed a work life balance, and that might make him the most powerful one.

Can't wait for peacemaker. I became a father like right after it came out and definitely made me sad for his backstory plus it was hilarious

I missed most of this when it first ran catching episodes here or there on... I think it was on FOX Kids? But I ended up watching most of it some years later when it ran on Cartoon Network after school and really loved the show. I really should rewatch it someday. The positivity would be nice.
