I was prescribed statins at 27 for my slightly high cholesterol. I literally couldn’t walk from them. I told my doctor I will never take them again and he said I will have a heart attack or stroke. It’s been 2 years and even after a pregnancy which increased my cholesterol even more I haven’t had any heart problems. 😂

Take fish oil supplement to help lower your risk of heart. Attack. I was not able to move my legs and with severe right shoulder pain which like my arm got chopped off 😂. I end up stopping taking statin and replacing it with big dose of fish oil. I ended up able to stand up still without feeling of falling in about 1 week

I have been on 40 mg atorvastatin per day for 12 months since having a stent installed in my left coronary artery. I can hardly walk, cannot get up from the ground, and hardly can get out of a chair. After quite some amount of research I am going to stop taking them now that I am certain that they are the cause of these issues. Best of luck to all who are dealing with this. It is quite the pain in the arse.

I’d had knee surgery back in March. I had been taking a statin. I had severe swelling. Nothing worked to relieve me. Not even Tylenol, muscle rubs and messages. A few days ago, I stopped taking the statin and lo and behold I am not swelling and in pain. I knew it. I’m watching what I eat and switched over to eating vegetables and bitter foods. This is of my own doing. I’m tired of being sick.

Doctor, you are super. Your slow n clear talk will benefit millions. I am 80 n a stroke patient. My doctor prescribed Atorvastaatin 20 mg. After taking it for a year I found body pains n shortage of bile. As a pharmacist I was able to identify the source as the statin. I stopped using n my body aches disappeared. In about a year bile normalised. And today I am hundred percent better. No statins for me.🙏🙏🙏

I have been on astorvastatin for years for borderline cholesterol. I was having aches and pains along with stiffness. I had been considering reducing or stopping the drug. Then my neighbor also on astorvastatin developed muscle weakness where she could hardly walk and fell backwards down her stairs while headed to bead at night. She was diagnosed with necrotizing meyosititus (sp). Now she receives an IV for four hours two consecutive days once a month for the last six months. The dr. said was caused by the statin. I subsequently talked with my GP and stopped my statin drug. BTW i am 72 and recently had a physical including echocardiogram and cardio stress test. Passed all with no narrowing of any blood vessels.

I had so much pain I had unnecessary surgery! Pain showed up in my shoulder ON ONLY ONE SIDE! Since most pain from statins usually exhibits on both sides of your body...no doctor thought it was the statins. Cried myself to sleep for 6 months then got addicted to opioids. Luckily my chlorestoral got worse and doctor doubled my statin. Pain so bad for two minutes months that I realized it was the statin. I decided to stop the statin completely. Three days later, after two years of pain, all pain stopped. Advice- 1) no matter what the doctors suggest, take half the dose or less for a while to gauge side effects. 2) When doctors do not know something, they blame you, not their lack of knowledge 3) You must be your own advocate regardless of how you are treated by docs and nurses. Fight for yourself regardless of what you are told. Hope this helps you.

@@ThinkYourHealth physical therapy makes it worse I had 3 months of therapy ended up having massage and cupping to relieve the muscle knots in my upper back. Now the pain is mainly in lower back and thighs and now working into my knees. I am choosing to discontinue my Repatha therapy for atleast 6 months to let my body get back to normal. I have tried pain medication several different kinds. Ibuprofen and shots of Toradol at ER seem to have the best relief. but only temporary. The more this medication for me that is taken (Repatha) the more it builds up and effects my liver and the pain is getting worse and so is my health. It has caused me to become crippled and I can barely walk. last shot taken 2 weks ago or so and I am just now getting over the painful peak. I am probably in the 5% that can not tolerate this kind of medication. Proluent did the same thing even worse in 3 months thiat one was horrible. So for now I have to try to watch my diet even more closely. I am preparing to do a DNA of my health to see if it can give me a more in depth idea about my body composition and sensitivities. Do you have any ideas or suggestions of which DNA service does the best testing for this kind of analysis?

I was prescribed a statin by my doc to lower cholesterol but after learning the bad side effects I asked if their was an alternative. He said change your diet which I've done. I was surprised he didn't mention that option before prescribing a statin.. Do you recommend statins to lower cholesterol?
@ThinkYourHealth
@ThinkYourHealth 4 жыл бұрын
A very good question with no straight forward answer, as the answer is more nuanced.The hallmark of treatment are : LIFESTYLE CHANGES: Lifestyle modifications such as smoking cessation, increase in physical activity, and improvement in diet have important beneficial effects on cardiovascular morbidity and mortality . These changes are effective even shortly after they have been started.In one of my previous videos I have recommended the Mediterranean diet .Now according to medical guidelines the following are recommendation given to Doctors on when to start a patient on a Statin drug: I have labelled them as 1 and 2 so that you can read the current established guidelines.(1)Patients with established coronary heart disease (CHD) have a high risk of subsequent cardiovascular events, including myocardial infarction (MI), stroke, and death from cardiovascular disease (CVD). (2) Similarly, patients without established disease but who have a 10-year risk of >7.5 to 10 percent or greater are at relatively high risk. This your Doctor can calculate given your medical history. My approach is slightly different as I want patients to take responsibility for their health and I hook them up with a dietician and if need be talk to our physical therapy department about an exercise program.So even if Cholesterol and in particular LDL- cholesterol might be higher and they do have risk factors the benefits of a regular exercise program and diet outweigh Statin treatment and potential side effects. ( There are certain diseases with high Triglycerides where we need to start at once, but this is too much detail).I will reiterate also what I wrote as an answer to Dr.Sno as she asked about when to start or stop treatment in older adults.This is what I wrote: The decision whether to treat an elevated LDL-C in an older individual should be individualized based on both chronological and biologic age. I am conservative with my patients and patients with a limited life span from a concomitant illness, frailty, multiple co-morbidities are probably not a candidates for drug therapy. I usually start having these discussions after age 70, especially after 80.I have a sub set of patients who are quite medically complex, and in fact had a conversation with our pharmacy consultant last week to identify patients who might be on Statins looking for opportunities to taper or titrate doses off.I have linked a PDF link which you can read and those are the recommendations I follow: www.choosingwisely.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/Cholesterol-Drugs-For-People-75-And-Older-AMDA.pdf.

Myositis is quite less common in cardiac practice. We have treated hundred of ischemic heart disease for last 15 years as a cardiac surgeon. We have seen very few symptoms among pre and post cabg patients on atorvastatin 40 or rosuvastatin 20. Q10 added lessens the symptoms . Of course we have used lesser amounts and on alternate days regime. But stoppage of medicine statins may land one up in CVA or progression of vascular and renal diseases.

I was on Lipitor for slightly elevated cholesterol for about 1 year - my dr put down my muscle weakness to being age related, but after two months I knew that she was wrong as people don't age so fast. At my insistence she ordered a blood test and my CK levels were found to be elevated. Stopped that statins and went to a naturopath who subscribed COQ10 and acupuncture. Took about six months to feel normal again. Thanks for this video - very interesting and well explained.

Night cramps can be deficiency in Magnesium. Day cramps or during exercise can be deficiency in Potassium. Deficiency in either or both Mg and K plus intake of Statins can make cramping worse: very painful. Potassium is easier for the body to absorb compared to Magnesium. Mg requires appropriate level of acidity in the stomach for better absorption.

@@derekearles9844 Vitamin D deficiency can also cause leg cramps. I’m on a low dose 5 mg rosuvastatin and also take 2,000 mg of D3 daily. Most people are deficient in vitamin D because it comes mainly from the sun or fish oils. People in the northern hemisphere and people with dark skin tone don’t absorb enough vitamin D and need to take a daily supplement. Light exercise also relieves leg muscle pain.

I haven't seen you discuss exercise yet (I'm at about 7:40) but here's my story. Having been on atorvastatin for years (7+), occasionally in the early months with thigh related muscle pain (I think dose was adjusted) I turned 70 and started training for a 1/2 marathon. Within days I was experiencing severe muscle pain in my thighs, particularly the right one (which was also the case previously). But this time the pain was much worse, and was even beginning to interfere with sleep. I was unwilling to give up the exercise (running) and so decided after a couple of days to just go off the statins. Within days (2 or 3) the pain subsided and quite rapidly disappeared. I haven't spoken to my doctor about this yet, but the training for the 1/2 is the paramount issue for me now and I'm unwilling to conduct my own A-B-A test to see if the pain returns on statins. I'll update him or her (I'm in a big practice so you are not always certain who you see) at my next semi-annual checkup.

For every drug there is a side effect so said my deceased father 30/ years ago. Nothing changes as Big Pharma companies will still get their huge profits, still be sued billions of dollars for negligence, side effects, fraud, bribery. Ethics don’t always matter over profit and side effect and deaths from meds are just a by product of their inventions.

I've been on atorvastatin on and off for the past 2 yrs. Just recently as 3 weeks ago I've been experiencing some random sensations in my chest muscles in different spots.The sensations could best be described as spasms, pulses, and sometimes palpitations. Within the past few days currently, this would immediately be followed by muscle weakness in other parts of my body followed by the feeling of fainting or immediately falling asleep. During these "episodes" I would get random pin pricks in different muscles, muscle trembling along with the weakness, and sometimes a dull burning sensation in random muscles, as if my muscles are wasting away. This may last an hour up to a few hours, but once it subsides I feel normal again as if nothing has happened. I thought it was something going on with my heart or I may be developing a musculoskeletal disorder. But just last night when I looked up the possible side effects of atorvastatin this all began to make sense. I just hope that these side effects haven't done any irreversible damage.

your taking to high a dose of the statin, this happened to me at the start of using a statin, once my cholesterol was at an acceptable level I stopped taking any kind of statin, keep to a healthy diet and you will be ok without a statin, everyone knows their own bodies, doctors to me are basically just agents for drug companies, so beware of doctors telling you to take medications, all that does is make their lives easier, I have seen good doctors and not so good doctors, the really good doctors are brilliant, but I would say due to having to many patients usually, the could not care less doctors I would put at 95%

I realize this video is 2 years old but I wanted to comment. I found your video very informative. And you seem to take the muscle pain seriously. I watched a few other videos before this one and it seems like most Drs. do not take the muscle pain seriously. I was started on lipitor about 5 months ago, but have been having pain in my upper back and left chest muscle for several months now. Feels just like you mentioned, as if I had the flu. Always sore. Not very "painful" per se, just sore. I have family members that take this same medicine, and they do not ever complain. However, I am also on a calcium channel blocker. I have an appt today with my Dr. and I will be mentioning the pains to her and if it could possibly be a side effect of the medicine.

The second time I could barely perform basic care activities and thought I was heading for a Nursing Home.
