My Husband had been taken Atorvastatin for nearly 20 years. He had no real side effects until about 3 years ago when he developed joint pain in one knee. This gradually deteriorated and spread to both legs causing him to need a stick for support when walking. We struggled to get him a GP appointment because it was during the pandemic, but when we did the Doctor did not seem too concerned and at no point mentioned the use of Statins. My Husband continued to deteriorate, with terrible pain in walking, lethargy and fatigue. He spent time in Hospital with kidney problems, he had urine retention and had a stent fitted in his kidney. He was in and out of Hospital last year when in August he became unable to move without assistance and was admitted for the last time. He died in September. I now have found out that a lot of his symptoms were probably caused by the use of Statins. Were the GP and Hospital negligent?

I was on 80 mg a decade ago and ended up with serious stiff back muscles and leg muscles which added the sciatica also. I was 55 then. I was in physiotherapy for 4 months and continued supervised exercise in the same Physiotherpy gym for another 4 months, and with a pain specialist for a year at the sametime. Thanks to my PT, he asked me to stop the statin for a while with my PCP advice to continue with the PT. It was a roller coaster ride. I found articles saying stiff muscles is a rare side effect, but since I was on high dose of statin, probably hit me. I have been on considerable reduced dosage since then, and am doing ok. I keep thanking my PT for his pointing out to my statin. Just wanted to tell my experience.

I was prescribed Atorvastatin in July of this year. My cholesterol wasn't particularly high so I don't know what my doctor was trying to accomplish. After taking medicine for about 8 weeks a blood test revealed my blood sugar had risen 40 points to about 160. Shortly afterwards I developed joint pain in my hips (at the time I was walking about 5 miles daily or cycling 25 miles for excercise). After taking my normal walk one day I began to cough uncontrollably. I could feel my sinuses draining into my lungs. Joint pain also increased significantly. At the beginning of November I began to suspect the Atorvastatin was the cause. I stopped using the drug and contacted my doctor. Because of Covid my doctor was only doing virtual appointments so I was unable to have him actually examine me. The cough worsened and a chest X-ray revealed bronchitis which was treated with mild antibiotics. I felt somewhat better however joint pain was increasing to the point where I had trouble getting out of bed and moving around. Eventually the cough came back, worsened, and I was diagnosed with pneumonia . I'm recovering from the pneumonia and have an appointment to see a rheumatologist to see if thr joint pain is permanent or can be reversed. Atorvastatin quite literally ruined my health. I cannot walk the distances I used to and I struggle with the urge to cough constantly. Perhaps not life threatening side effects, but centainly life changing side effects.

"After taking medicine for about 8 weeks a blood test revealed my blood sugar had risen" Same here. This is what they never tell you. I was placed on Atorvastatin with a barely above average cholesterol reading. I was already on Lisinopril for my blood pressure (which was also under control and doing fine) but I was also placed on a second blood pressure medication (Amlodipine) at the same time as Atorvastatin. My blood sugar skyrocketed after being put on these unnecessary meds. Health care "professionals" NEVER explain how these drugs can cause your blood glucose to spike... sending you into pre-diabetes or full blown Type 2 diabetes where you otherwise would have no reason to. I stopped taking both of those meds and my blood sugars have been slowly but steadily heading back to normal.

As a chronic case manager- I found this very helpful. Some patients aren’t aware that their complaints may actually be side effects from their current medications. It’s very important especially when multiple pharmacies and/or multiple doctors are involved that we consider the possibility of a drug/drug interaction as well. I know of at least two cases where such a thing has occurred with my patients- but I caught before the mail order pharmacy was able to fill the order.

Was on 80mg a day after bypass surgery. Could not remember things, was confused, knew something was wrong but thought it was a side effect of the coronary bypass surgery. Went to my doc for a respiratory illness, she decided that 80mg was too much, my lipids were very good and went down to 40mg a day. Several weeks later I realized that my memory was improved and I wasn't fogged out all the time. I started cutting the 40mg in half and next visit my lipids were still good. I told the doc and she prescribed 20's. I immediately started cutting those in half. When the next couple of labs showed my chloresterol was still good, I told the doc about cutting the 20's in half and my memory had greatly improved and wasn't nearly as befuddled as before and I'm just on 10mgs a day now.

I have an arterial blockage in one leg at about 74. I kept on doing my activities, mountain biking, kayaking, and working a physical job, though I couldn't walk very far. The doctor put me on 40mg of Atorvastatin a day and one cartia tablet. I'm now 80 and still doing my sports activities, though retired now. I've noticed in the last two years that I do less and get tired more. I have aches and pains but I think after a lifetime of hard manual work and a long long list of physical injuries starting at aged 6 being run over by a taxi to breaking 3 ribs and my scapular 2 years ago going off a drop. I think it's natural as you get older to wear out and have all those aches and pains. Also as you age you look back more and think too much about the past and the thing you did or didn't do and family matters, so sometimes not sleeping well is to be expected. What I'm saying is, how can you tell if it's a natural part of aging or it's the effects of the statin

Seriously? I am 78, fit, energetic and eat well. short story. Open heart surgery and a 50% blocked artery. Got over the surgery well and put on a statin ' to be safe'. One month later i feel like i am dying. Complete blood check and I am. Liver and kidneys going down fast. My local GP wants me to keep taking the statins but I say no. It is the only change in my living behaviour. 3 months and feeling better so thought i would given them another try. lower dosage and 1 month later not feeling good so stop and demand blood checks. Same story - body dying. Stay of statins for around 7 months this time and feeling good again. Surely the statins weren't so bad so give then a try again. 2 Weeks and I can feeling the body going down again, so stop. No more statins. Once again bloods showed the body negative reaction. Now a year later I finally feel 'normal' again both in body and mind! That's how you tell if it is nature or the chemical. By the way they did lower my cholesterol, however it has never been above recommended levels; although in the last 2 years they have kept dropping the recommended level so it extrapolates that everyone will soon have 'high' cholesterol!

Another thing I'd like to add is statins also cause cataracts. I went to the opthalmologist two weeks ago and discovered I have cataracts in both eyes but they are too small for surgery. If you hava muscle pain following statin use, you should get a check done for CPK level. Statins tend to raise teh CPK level and a higher CPk level can cause your muscles to degrade or sort of like dissolve in layman's terms. Sometimes the CPK level can also be due to below normal Vit D. Any time you have a muscle pain have the CPK level checked not very many physicians do it but i learned about it from mine. Some tiimes a differrent cholestrol lowering drug will not affect the CPK. Remembe that a higher elevated level of CPK canaffect the Hear muscle too. Just what i learned from my experience with cholestrom med use.Feel free to share your experience

I wish my cardiologist would treat me as well when I ask questions about my meds. She just brushes off any questions about my meds as if it were a real bother to give me any information about possibillity of changes that may be necessary. She has recently added several PAs in her office and I guess she would rather not be bothered and she wants to get her mones's worth out of her new hires. I'm considering consulting another cardiologist to see what that may produce.

Ever since using statins I became more and more pre diabetic although not diagnosed as pre diabetic it became a concern. Muscles and muscle tissue became weaker and much more susceptible to muscle tearing. Certainly affected my connective tissue. I had unique side effect - the skin on tip of my private part had become sensitive forming cuts and bleeding. I stopped few times and it would recover . I’ve started taking Simvastatin now, hopefully no side effects, keeping my fingers crossed.

Thank you Doctor for the valuable information. Over twelve years ago, I was assessed as having high cholesterol and was prescribed statin based drug. Within about a year I began feel the loss of memory and unbelievable muscle pain. Normal pain killers didn’t work and so my doctor prescribed pain medications and sleeping pills. Doctor also tried many different cholesterol tablets but of no avail. This went on for about 4-5 years. Finally I took a decision to go against my doctor and did not to take any cholesterol medications. He didn’t know about my decision. I changed my diet and increased the exercises. I do blood tests about twice a year and the cholesterol readings show slightly above the margins. My doctor seems to be not alarmed. But the muscle pain has not gone away. It’s about 80% of what it was. My memory is still not great.

Good presentation. I was an active, crazy active cyclist when I was prescribed stati (I think Simvistatin), I let the fear of 'muscle pains' (most likely from 300mi/week of riding) get to me so I stopped. I listened to a podcast recently that suggested that they studied real pains to suggested pains and surmised that most people overreacted or thought the pains were a side effect. A few years later and cholesterol started creeping up again so now I'm on Atorvastatin, no sides, but won't know benefits until tested. It hasn't helped ED as I hoped (first time it did).

I was once prescribed 10mg of Atorvastin, and boy the side effects.. tightness in my armpit, some dizziness, and then suddenly my family practitioner removed it from my prescription citing she wrongfully prescribed becuse she learned it was not to be used for minorities. I thought that was strange nor could I find any medical articles to support that statement. However, I moved Bystolic 10mg and while its more expensive, the results were great by putting my BP in normal range. Atvorstatin never really got my BP in range. I'm a blk male, age 45, was 40yrs old then, avg BP was 155/80. After bystolic i see avg 135/75, resting HR tends to be around 62bpm.

Statins are garbage. The side effects are horrendous and many suffer from them but are silent. I was on metformin and atorvastatin for 3 yrs. My doctor told me I was prediabetic and I needed the metformin. She told me metformin was a miracle drug. She also put me on atorvastatin. She told me high cholesterol could lead to diabetes. I told my doctor if I wasn't diabetic I didn't want to take pills, I expressed a desire to change my eating habits. She insisted I take the pills. She used diabetic scare tactics to get me on these pills. I started taking them because I assumed she was the doctor and knew best. A few months into taking these pills my blood sugar started crashing without warning. I thought I was suffering anxiety attacks. It took me 3 yrs and an emergency room bill to figure out the metformin was giving hypoglycemia. I quit taking metformin a month ago but I was still suffering neuropathy pains. My moods were horrible and I was depressed a lot. My hair is thinning. My left hip hurt constantly. My vision was blurry and I had a constant ringing in my ears that plagued me for almost 2 yrs. I quit the atorvastatin 4 days ago and all these things have nearly subsided. I pray my hair grows back to it's former thickness. In the future I will do my research before I allow some pill pushing doctor to scare me into taking pills. I would rather die of a heart attack than take some poisonous pill that makes me wish I was dead. Cholesterol is made by the liver and there is absolutely no evidence that high cholesterol causes strokes or heart attacks and statins don't prevent either. People need to stand up for themselves and tell their doctors to shove these statin meds. There should be laws against the medical profession using scare tactics to get people on these meds.

I have COPD and so breathlessness isn't unusual. As COPD causes a gradual but progressive decline in lung function, it isn't always obvious if statins can make breathlessness worse and yet remain unrecognised as an additional factor because of the nature of COPD itself.

I also have COPD-about 40% lung function. I hadn’t heard that statins have any effect of the lungs, but I’ma gonna check it out now! I must say, I haven’t noticed any correlation but of course, with a heart condition on top of everything, plus old age (I’m 67), it’s awfully hard to discern. But I do take “statin holidays” (about 2 or 3 weeks off every three to four months-which seems to temporarily solve my muscle-pain problem almost instantly, so good correlation there, at least). I also keep copious daily notes (a habit from when I used to work) so I’m gonna keep this in mind, see if I can test it in any conclusive way, all other things considered. Thnx!

Since I've been taking it, I've noticed the joint and muscle pain. I used to be able move around pretty freely, but not any more. I'm also feeling a little behind the power curve mentally at times. I just don't feel the same. I've changed everything I eat now. I cut out red and white meat, cheese, and anything else that's high in Cholesterol. I've lost 30+ lbs. I'm due for a video conference with my Surgeon on the 23red of this month. Any advice?

I had been on 80mg Atorvastatin for about two years, followinng a mild heart attack in early 2020 resulting in two stents being inserted. In the past few months i began to experience a lot of pain in my sacroiliac area and down the left leg muscles, waking up a couple of times in the night with the pain, and generally not being able to sit for very long. I discussed the symptoms with my GP and we agreed to reduce the dosage for a couple of months to 20mg a day whilst we monitor the pain levels- two months into the reduced dosage, the pain in my lower back hasnt really improved and im wondering if the damage has already been done and its too late to get rid of the pain without further action like physio therapy. Im due to discuss the symptoms again in about a week with my GP to decide if the reduction in dosage has resulted in increased cholesterol again, or if we increase the dose again. But the pain in my lower back and sacroilic area is very annoying now and effecting my life-style. I understand that my cholesterol level is very very low - so why continue with Atorvastatin ?

Wow same thing happened to my brother, I’m from north wales , worse thing we ever did was take these Covid injections, around here were all suffering with anemia ( spelt that wrong bear with me) but it’s true, we’re worse off now than we ever were!

Thank you for a great video, concise and directly to the point and greatly informative. My own doctor should be so informative!

I have taken several Statins drugs for my cholesterol and they each caused me so much difficulty during the times I was on them, I had to quit taking them. The worse one was Simvastatin I was on this from 2-3 years and it caused me severe muscle tenderness in my thighs and legs honestly I hurt so bad trying to just walk till I felt like crying. I was always very tired with real bad back pains due to this I couldn’t stand standing for too long. Next one was lovastatin, after only a month this one was no better but I continued to take it for several more months but I couldn’t handle it either my whole body was in agony I had trouble just doing the least household chores it was horrible. My last one was Atorvastatin, which was as bad as the previous statin drugs all the muscles legs and ankle pains this drug caused I knew this was a family of drugs that was not safe or good to take and that ended Statins for me. Even though, this is listed on my medical history, doctors will still try and talk to me about using them but I am not disable and can say NO!
