Excuse sir! Can you explain how you got 12.5 when finding the median of the second Quartile? I thought the median, in this case for even numbers, was to take the 2 middle numbers, add them and then divide by 2.

(Q3) 14.5 - (Q1) 11 = 3.5
@hannahtang5018
@hannahtang5018 7 жыл бұрын
Shouldn't Q3 be 14.75? Since the formula to find Q3 is [3(N+1)]/4, and N=12, Q3 would equal 9.75 which means to say Q3 would be at the 9.75th position right? 14.5 would be halfway between the 9th and 10th number which is 14 and 15 respectively, but Q3 should be at the 9.75th position, meaning it should be 14.75, no?
@shalinicreates1598
@shalinicreates1598 6 жыл бұрын
But 14+15 divided by 2 is then when the value of Q3 might be 9.5 .that indicate get the value Q3 = size of 9th item and + size of 10th item divided by 2. 14.75 is correct

@samuelfunk4142
@samuelfunk4142 9 жыл бұрын
+Gio De La O Its just how you have to test for outliers most of the time (sometimes you can eyeball it, or due to the type of data you may not want to remove data points). You need to take Q3 + 1.5(IQR) to check for outliers on the high end and take Q1 - 1.5(IQR) to check for outliers on the low end. Pretty much always use 1.5 unless its stated otherwise. I looked and haven't found yet why 1.5 is used rather than 1.4, 1.6, or 1.55, ect. Sorry if the info I've given is redundant. I wasn't sure if you meant how 1.5 was originally determined and now widely used(which I am not sure on), or where he pulled the number 1.5 out of(just part of the formula for determining outliers).

The 1.5 is an often used "rule" to determine outliers. I say "rule," because you could technically choose other values like 2, or 1.6. You can thank John Tukey for the wide use of 1.5. For more information check out the discussion here: math.stackexchange.com/questions/966331/why-john-tukey-set-1-5-iqr-to-detect-outliers-instead-of-1-or-2/3367251

+America Eleheja 1.5 is just part of the formula used to determine outliers. Q3 + 1.5(IQR) to check for outliers on the high end and take Q1 - 1.5(IQR) to check for outliers on the low end. I'm not sure where mathematicians came up 1.5 originally, but it seems to be used in everything I've seen.
