My father joined the army at 14 as an apprentice (he was orphaned at 14). He soldiered through WWII as a REME engineer, battling with the desert rats in North Africa and then on to Monte Casino (one of the worst battles), Crete, France, Germany. Whenever I hear this song, it means a lot to me. And makes me wonder what happened to those young soldiers with such huge smiles on their faces.

I listened to this song when I enlisted into the British army and it reminds me of the comradeship that I have. I feel blessed to survive Afghan but not so blessed to suffer with the mental trauma of the war zones I went through. I listened to the original before I reported to Basic training and thought of it when I saw one of my fellow recruits moderately injured (nearly lost a few fingers). I know the old version was written with the draft in mind but both versions provide the good and bad sides of the military. Life can be terrible but meaningful. I love it.

A friend at Sandhurst served in the Rhodesian military and on the first night in camp they were woken up at 2 am by a fire drill, assembled on the main square and did military drill for four hours whilst this song blasted out on powerful speakers on a loop. I think that is AWESOME. I’d not have been able to get the smile off my face had I been there - I think that’s a genius level introduction to soldiering.
