1:19:16 This is a perfect example of a deeply irresponsible marriage. 1. You should have figured out what your plan was for the debt before you got married, because 2. In most states under most circumstances the court is going to treat the married couple as a single financial unit with joint assets (unless you have a prenup, and since they didn't make a plan for the debt I strongly doubt they have a prenup.) The debt, the investments, any bank accounts, it's all going into the joint marital property pot, so letting the debt continue to accrue interest just hurts both parties. I'd say you definitely wanna prepare for divorce though, because 3. You're not the breadwinner if your part-time spouse also has to pay half the bills in addition to having more household responsibilities. The whole point of having a breadwinner setup is that one partner takes greater responsibility for bringing money into the household, while the other takes greater responsibility for the work of maintaining the household- in this situation, you have equal financial responsibility but he still has greater household responsibility. If his part-time work draws in enough money to cover half the bills, great, but you're not a breadwinner if you're only covering half, doesn't matter how many hours you work. If you're not able to work out something as basic as "should I pay down his credit card debt when it's a joint martial asset" how the fuck are you going to figure out how to pay, say, a medical bill if you get sick and can't work? How are you going to have that financial conversation if you can't have an incredibly basic financial conversation?
