3rd gen Italian who grew up in Brooklyn and I agree with Stav 100%. Every family gathering it's like everyone is trying to out Italian each other. I would say at least 75% of them never set foot on the boot, and if they did they'd be hated over there.

My parents are Italian and I was born and raised in Montreal, Canada. It seems to be a very American phenomenon. I think Canadian Italians immigrated more recently, and have a larger connection to Italy. Eventually it becomes ridiculous to hang on to the ethnicity though. I wonder if he realizes how many of us are embarrassed by the image that's been perpetuated, and hate being associated with it.

I am Italian as well, except I am I Chicago Italian which is probably in a lot of ways similar to the New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Italians. I did have some older family members who were involved with organized Italian American crime. The thing is every time someone come straight over from Italy. They get treated like shit by the Italian Americans and every time in Italian American goes over to Emily they get treated like shit by the real Italian so it is kind of funny.

Isnt Italian food served in the US a regional version of Italian food as a whole? I guess you can argue (its part of the fun) what's authentic and what isnt but just because Alfredo is very popular in the US, but mostly unpopular in Italy doesnt make it less Italian does it? All the talk about Americans being incorrect by ordering Alfredo in Italy had me convinced it wasnt an authentic Italian dish. It is. Its an interesting history because its popularity just isnt widespread in Italy like it is in US and thats more than likely why its scoffed at by Italians as a dish to be served in restaurants. I think its really just a regional thing. In the end it WAS created in Italy....also most variations of it are effin delicious!! Lol
