Spike Lee directed that video and the one for "Scenario" by A Tribe Called Quest. Speaking of Spike Lee, if you haven't seen his movies, you need to add them to your list, especially, "Do the Right Thing" and "Malcolm X".

Public Enemy are another pioneer in music and hip hop history. They had deep and profound messages expressing their convictions and were just different from other groups at the time. As a human being, I admire anyone's ability to turn an important message into a form of art. At the time, as a young 17 year old white female, Public Enemy was an educator and helped me understand some things I would have never been taught in school (EDIT: or at home). Great choice!

@@laraismyname821 I am an air force brat so I've moved around. I went to junior high in Tacoma, WA... high school in central California and my senior year in a Minneapolis suburban high school. Black history, civil rights education in all of those schools was surface level, boilerplate basics. I learned more about cultural history outside the classroom and through music and sometimes TV. Mostly MTV 😅.

Elvis was not racist, he grew up with Blk people and was one of very few who admit that he owes everything that made him famous to his icons, Little Richard, B.B. King, etc. In fact, one of his back singers was Whitney Houston's mom who said a kind and generous man and when they were denied admittance to a hotel while he was on tour, he told his agent that if they were not allowed to stay, he was not going to perform. The rumors about Elvis' racism have been dismissed after this video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aIDbYoelp8pspNksi=B7QRPsTDI3pJWweK

yeah, Chuck did admit he was heavy-handed in name-dropping Elvis like that. Elvis himself rejected the "King of Rock and Roll" epithet because, as a devout Christian, the one King he answered to was Jesus, and if there was to be a King of Rock, he claimed it should be Fats Domino, not him. the thing is (not diminishing Elvis' contributions to the genre or music as a whole, of course), America prefered to be scandalized by a white guy shaking his booty on TV than accept black musicians doing what they do (you heard the stories about Chuck Berry being stopped from entering his own concert, right?). no apologies for John Wayne though.

@@AndyKusanagi86 I am with you! I just want us to remember to appreciate the few who do respect us for the great things we have done for this country culturally, socially, and morally, and he was one of the few. And I have never liked John Wayne as he was a bonafide racist. When I was a little girl (a long time ago 😁,) he was the great white hope in every movie he was in, whether he was the outlaw or lawman. Although he made a healthy living playing roles like Geronimo and Genghis Khan, he would have hated them had he actually met them, just because they were not white. Them folks are funny like that.

Fun fact: Public Enemy’s first tour in 1987 they opened for…. The Beastie Boys!! You should react to the Beasties Rock n Roll HOF induction speech. Chuck D and LL Cool J are the speakers and it’s INCREDIBLE, both to understand the OG impact of the BBoys but also Chuck D is one of the greatest wordsmiths of my lifetime. I’m happy to say that, although I went mostly to see U2, the first live band I ever saw when I was 16 in 1993 was Public Enemy who was the opening act. 🔥

Not sure if anyone has mentioned it yet, but Chuck D is also a graphic artist and created their logo. “The crosshairs logo symbolized the black man in America,” explains Chuck D . As the graphic emblem of the politically engaged Public Enemy, the logo blatantly portrays the violence suffered by African Americans at the hands of the police and the state - in the eighties and still today.

65yo white man here to comment that PE's music is still relevant today. We have much to do. Their album "Fear of a Black Planet" was prescient. Check out "Can't Truss It".

was listening to Public Enemy way back in the late 80s early 90s, i'm a white Englishman 47yrs, it shouldn't but it does surprise me that so many Americans haven't heard of them. I also feel Chuck D is looked over as a lyricist, maybe because he was very political, but i put him up there.

One of the best hip hop songs ever made IMHO. You should really check out By the Time I get Arizona. My Favorite P.E. Song. It has the sickest beat along with powerful lyrics.

And in case it wasn't already answered, Terminator X was also a group member (off and on... he was considered "too militant" (lol) a few times that caused them to drop him, then bring him back, and then drop him. DJ Lord was on the turn table. They had a full band, that were always credited as being part of the group - Sister Soudjah, Davy DMX (not taking away from the great DMX (r.i.p.), he just wasn't the first DMX) were also considered part of the group, although usually just on tours. Davy DMX played one hell of a guitar. Crunch, The Interrogator, Brother James, Brother Rodger, Power Born, and T Bone Motta....I feel like I'm forgetting someone...if so, I apologies.
