We don’t usually have repeat guests on this podcast… except we’re making an exception for the wonderful and wise Alan Alda. Alan Alda, of course, is an award-winning actor, writer, director, and podcast host. You probably know and love him as Hawkeye on M*A*S*H or Senator Arnie Vinick on The West Wing. He is endlessly curious on just about every topic-which makes him the perfect person to talk to about empathy, learning across differences (and disagreement), and how we might age into new hobbies and careers.
In this conversation, Alan and Kate discuss:
- Tricks for staying curious as we age
- How to talk to someone you disagree with
- How Alan hopes to destigmatize Parkinson’s Disease
- The difference between empathy and compassion and how to practice these important skills

It's a pity we only have this one word, 'love,' in the English language. The warmhearted appreciation that flows between you is a balm to all who witness it. It is a flavor of love, and love has so many flavors. Thank you.

My husband and I just finished MASH series and OH MY GOD! We loved it! Back in the 80’s we were young adults and tv wasn’t a thing for people that age but of course we knew about it and caught an episode or two and of course the very last one. Didn’t occur to us to actually watch it until October 2023. So we embarked on the best series experience ever! The writing back in those days was impeccable. My how things have changed. I consider MASH as one of THE BEST SERIES I’ve ever watched! I love Alan Alda. What a true icon!

I love what you said about focusing on other people as a way to diminish your obsession with your own problems. Thank you for that insight! That will be a new goal for me.

It is heartening to see older people keeping at life. Pete Seeger kept singing even once his voice croaked. Dan Rather writes brilliant essays at 92. I am thrilled to keep up online with the professionally adorable Paul McCartney. I am happy to have the people who were part of my life remain so. I watched MASH and then the re-runs, so I am happy to see Alan Alda now,, despite his health problem. He has a great sense of humor!

Aaaaww! I haven't seen him in so long. I've been a fan since M*A*S*H. It breaks my heart to see him all shaky like that. I'll try to watch this tomorrow, as it's getting late here.

It would be very useful if we know the source of an exercise program oriented toward Parkinson's.

Science is not a god. It’s very human and gropes towards a slight variation of the previous idea. Rushing out an RNA jab isn’t really scientific but rather a case of hitting the panic button.
