Stay In The “Zone” See Your Shot Through! Traditional Archery Tips

Here’s a very important and sometimes overlooked aspect of a successful and accurate shot process with traditional archery gear! Well do some shooting and demonstrate how critical seeing the shot through and staying in the “Zone” really is!

Your discussion reminds me of a book that I read almost 40 years ago titled The Zen Of Archery. You dropped your elbow on the third shot. I want to be as rock solid as you when I grow up with the bow. I wish to shoot even half as much as you do. I will start to work on that aspect. Thanks for the wisdom! It is great!

Jeff you are right on the money with this one. It doesn't take but the smallest, little, almost unperceiveable change in your form and follow through to make you miss. I have been shooting at 14 yards every day, as that is the distance from the game trail that the elk use, to my blind. I shoot at a piece of masking tape two inches by two inches. I can usually put about 2 or 3 shots into that piece of tape. Sometimes all four shots will be in it. But the ones that miss are only a couple to three inches out. When I make those misses, I know the milisecond that the shot goes off that they are going to miss. And I can feel it as well. And as far as the eye's go, I had a heck of a problem in that the fletching on my arrows was so bright, my eye would try to follow them instead of focusing on that piece of tape, and believe me that is a real bad thing to get into the habit of doing. You just have to focus on what it is you are wanting to hit clear through the shot cycle until the arrow hits it. I remember when I stumbled onto one of Jeff's video's a few years ago and was amazed at the accuracy he shot. It sure looked easy. That was when I decided to have him build me a bow. It has been one hell of a challenge, but I have had more fun shooting traditional than I ever did barebow or compound. And it gets better all the time. So to anyone reading this, Jeff is right on the money in this video. Take his advice and really work hard on this stuff and you will be glad that you did. Jim Baker City, Oregon

Great video! I have been a little frustrated with my shooting as of late. This video and your teaching ability showed me what I had been doing wrong and how to correct these issues. Now some may agree with me and some not. That’s OK. Snap shooting is INSTINCTIVE shooting. A true instinctive shooter will never hold at full draw, well maybe now and then if needed. But go watch Howard Hill, you will NEVER see him hold at full draw. Look up the word INSTINCTIVE in the dictionary. This is something some of us like myself and Jeff are born with. He is a much better shooter than me now because her shoots way more than me. More than I ever have. I also used to compete with a compound, but never 3D. Only indoor 300’s. The only thing I was worried about was the X Ring. That was 25 years ago when I stopped that. Now I am getting back into a longbow and have a lot of new stuff to learn. Back the last I shot longbow, carbon arrows was not a thing. Anyway, if you see Someone who never holds at full draw, and does pretty good, they are an instinctive shooter like Jeff is. It is not something you can learn to do. This is why I ask anyone who doubts this to just look that word up in any dictionary. It is a natural born instinct. Just like all animals can swim from birth. I love watching Jeff’s videos. Tons of great info. I wished I was his neighbor. I have so much to learn about carbon and Trad, spine alignment and all the stuff I should have know when I was competing. Like Jeff, I found out about arrow spine too late. After I stopped shooting. Even if o never bow hunt again, I still am looking forward to shooting every day it’s not raining. Good luck to you all and Jeff is a good wealth of knowledge.

Spot on sir. I taught my 2 boys to stay in the shot and follow through. It is really the only part of the shot we can control 100%. I mean we can draw 1/2" to far or less. We can be off on our aim. Some folks get target panic. You name it but, we can all make like a statue on release. So, if we are off in draw length, aim or release we can minimize that to a degree with follow through. I just got my oldest grandson a longbow. He is a natual but, I tell him don't move until I tell him he can on release. After 10 or 12 arrows, I tell him he can move once it hits the target. After about 5 arrows he is dropping his arm low and left. Then we start over. Like I said, that is the only part we can have total control over. Great video and so true.

I went to Tuscaloosa, I shot with a woman oh, that had a Osage self bow, I had not been shoot that long as a traditional Archer but I was watching her shoot, and I noticed that she was very accurate, and the one thing that stuck in my mind, and I said it to her you do not drop your bow arm until the arrow hits the Target. She told me years ago her husband toher never drop your arm until the arrow hit the target, I've never forgotten that and that is the one thing I struggle with. Trying to watch that Arrow fly, when I was shooting compound bows, I would get in the zone I would watch the Fletching spin all the way to hit the target, but traditional archery for some reason I drop that arm and try to watch the arrow

Look up Fred Asbell. He has been around the traditional bow world for a long time. I started shooting instinctive with a longbow several years ago. Moved from the compound world and never really looked back. I never really understood how to explain the act of shooting a bow without using any type of sight until I read Fred's book. He explains it like throwing a baseball. You look at your target and just do it. Your body will create muscle memory and adjust as you practice and get better. Some people are better at it than others, but almost everybody can learn with time and a little coaching

Great video again!!! I really try to do everything the same with the shot process to be consistent.. Every step every sequence the same. I found my string hand elbow would drop drawing the bow and alignment be off especially when getting tired from shooting. Now I really have to think it through thank you again.. P.s. it's a mental game!!

Great instructional video Jeff. I cant help but notice that you're using Gold Tip Warrior shafts. I recently switched to them 500 spine 30.5" w/50 grain Gold Tip inserts w/125 grain field points .They're shooting great from my 40# Shatterproof recurve.They're shooting great.. Love your videos Jeff, sorry you had to stop building bows but I’m happy you are still going at it in the ways you can. I must second the motion of a series on treestand shooting. That is a big subject for me, and several aspects of it with which I struggle. I like to shoot more vertically which puts my leg in the way, slight can’t puts my stand cables in the way, and I have a bum knee so if I could shoot sitting that would be best but obviously…. So I’d be willing to try some other methods to see what works, just might need some guidance from someone who knows what they’re doing

Believe it or not it’s like an invisible energy line from you to the arrow and if u move even once the arrow leaves a bow it can affect the arrow . Your transmitting, your energy into the arrow all the Way to the target. .

If you’re right handed the only thing I can think of is possibly collapsing the shot right at release not pulling through like pushing and pulling at the same time but I’ve honestly never seen it before.

Yes sir 30 degrees tail left if you’re a right handed shooter means a slightly weak shaft, if you’re actually hitting left with a fletched arrow they are probably too stiff but I think you’re talking about a bare shaft being 30 degrees left which would mean weak just a little bit 👍🏻
