Stay Melo: Carmelo in San Juan's Toughest Slum & the Knicks in Puerto Rico

To most, Puerto Rico is currently an island in economic decline. But to Carmelo Anthony it's a place of family, opportunity and a growing sports culture. With both seasons around the corner, we spent a few days training with a group of Knicks (including rookies Kristaps Porzingis and Jerian Grant) and seeing the stadium that will house Melo's Puerto Rico FC NASL team. We took a trip to La Perla, one of PR's most notorious hoods, to hang out with reggaeton legend Tempo, fresh out of prison after a 12 year bid.

Carmelo Anthony loves PR more than even so called Puerto Ricans athletes. Here in PR, and to be specific in Ponce, he trained with the Ponce team at a very young age. A coach here told him he had no future in basketball, fast forward a few years later and Melo was a star in Syracuse and went on to become an NBA player. Even with all of this, Melo still comes here, builds basketball courts through his foundations, spends time with people from these neighborhoods, and more. Yet, there are still some people who ask themselves why Melo decided not to play for Puerto Rico and play for the US instead; that's easy to answer, the coach who told him that he had no future was once in control of the national team, who in their right mind would like to play for a guy like him? To put it clear, Melo was not given a shot here so he instead explored with the US, and he's extremely successful there, where they believed in him. After all of this he stills believes in PR and does his charitable work here. No other Puerto Rican athlete, born and raised here, does that at the same magnitud Melo does. Carmelo Anthony is a true Puerto Rican.

+Bryan M. He was going to play but then the NCAA change the rules and declare the PR league, the BSN a profesional league. So he couldn't play. Before that the PR league was considered "amateur" because tecnically the players did not receive a salary but a diet compensation. Of course instead of $20 a day the diet was for the best players around 100K to 200k for a 3 month league, plus a car and an apartment. That way Carlos Arroyo play 4 years for FIU and at the same time earn close to 1 million in "diets" playing for Santurce. I think they sign Carmelo and he was going to Syracuse for around a month and then we will come to the end of the regular season to play for Ponce but at that time the NCAA change the rules. That was the reason he didn't play for Ponce.

Wow great info. Whoever's in charge of these national teams does a terrible job. They played their stars until they were like 40, never giving opportunities to younger guys. Now the team sucks and they haven't found an identity. Coming up in P.R. I've seen so much High school talent that should of already been on national teams, or at least given chances, yet there seems to be bureaucracy even on sports teams from PR.

Anthony J Robles Maldonado I made this observation 4 years ago. Over the course of that time I was seeing first hand many basketball players from my local university getting overlooked by the national league here. I know of two of them playing in college at good schools in US. I won't blame them if they decide not to play for the national team. There may not be a spot for them even if they wanted to, sadly.

Ive been living in the states for a few years now, but Rican blood runs through my veins and its just great to see this short film that showcases some of the slum in my island. Shouts to Melo. I was in San Juan and Arecibo just this February 2019 and I enjoyed it very much. Made it to La Perla and surprisingly there were very few people walking the streets and not a soul on the basketball court on a beautiful mid day. Took some great photos there and around San Juan. I'm not going to sugarcoat the whole trip, since I was intrigued by the condition of how much of the city and other areas were in very bad shape (not seem hurricane related) It got me even looking into the economic history of the island, it's commonwealth of the United States, and the struggles of the people. Looking for hopefully great things in the future of Puerto Rico. I will be back one day. Yo soy mexicano.

Man.... VICE is one of the realest journalist ever. You guys do ACTUAL Journalism... the reason I know is because I know the struggle of the black and latino and inner city community.... and I know how poorly portrayed it is to the public. I've seen the rough side, and I've seen the happy side, and the happy side is 80% more prevelant than the rough side. And you guys show the whole story.... Its a constant battle between those who have given up hope in the hood and those who want to give back and lift people off the ground. And the major media outlets are blind to this, and if they know this, they censor it.... But I'm so glad the VICE actually does their job as Journalists....

We spent the day training with a group of Knicks and seeing the stadium that will house Melo's Puerto Rico FC NASL team. In the afternoon we took a trip to La Perla, one of PR's most notorious hoods, to hang out with reggaeton legend Tempo. *WATCH NEXT*: Stay Melo: Carmelo Anthony in the Streets of Cuba - bit.ly/1LVk6FJ

+VICE Sports Tempo as Melo's host at La Perla makes no sense, it will make in Ponce, Tempo's hometown, which is also known as "La Perla del Sur". Tempo can be considered a legend, more because his incarceration than his musical career, he got a story for VH1 Behind The Music script formula because that, but calling him "hero" is giving too much props.

Lol Damn I knew it! I was on my honeymoon while they were out there in August. Idk if Melo stayed at the same hotel as me but I know the rookies did. Randomly one day there was just a bunch of tall dudes rocking Knicks gear walking around, I didn't put 2 and 2 together till now

We don't talk like that in Europe (trash talk) because we have a deep culture of respect. Even boxers you will very very rarely hear talking smack or shouting at their opponents in the press conferences etc. One of the first principles of sport is to show respect to not only your coaches/managers and teammates but also your opponents no matter what
