I was extremely lucky to see prime Raul and Casillas, I have never seen a goalkeeper do the things Casillas did, he was called "The Saint" for a reason. He made impossible save after impossible save. He was not the tallest, and Courtois/Neuer are probably better, but he had such a legendary aura and he won games by himself, let's not forget he won the world cup, UCL, La Liga, European Cup and basically every major title.

Neuer impressed visually because of how good he was at coming out of his box and playing as a sweeper, but that's not actually the main thing that separates "modern" from "old school" keepers. It's just being good on the ball, in distribution, and in press-resistance. It's mainly to create a numerical advantage when the opponents press high. One defender moves up, the keeper moves up, and unless the other keeper also marks a man, then it's a 11v10 game, there's always an extra man. That's what teams are looking for, and that's Pep's influence on the modern game. The keepers don't need to be able to "literally play in midfield" like Neuer. Plenty of Barca keepers as well as Van der Sar under LVG in the 90s were already doing the sweeper-keeper thing. So it's not like Pep invented the thing either, he just made a tactical approach seem much more viable that it was previously thought of. The detail itself would not matter if taken out of the greater context of playing out from the back and playing a positional game.

2010 4th in ballon d'or MY GOAT. Greatest save of all time against Prime Robben in a 1v1 where he dived early and srill saved it. Was captain in 08, 10, & 12 Spain dominance. Captain of Madrid after Raul and captained Madrid to La Decima. Cane through the ranks and Madrid never replaced him or Raul until mid 30s. My 🐐 Keeper. No keeper is better nor achieved more than my keeper.

Neuer is the best GK every lived on this planet so far. He revolutionised the game and set completely new requirements for goal keepers. GKs have to be full members of the team after Neuer, not 'only' jumping after the ball anymore. PS: Maybe he wasn't the first if you think of van Der Saar, but he was it who performed near perfection.
