@@defiante1 It's a situation that VOX knows how powerful Alastor actually is. He knows that their previous victory was not from The Vs power but maybe chance and/or circumstances. Vox won with the other 2 Vees present. He seems to be the only one shiting his pants at the knowledge that Alastor is back, I agree, which really tells the whole story. Valentino and Voxxy are way way way too over confident, Vox understands that what they built is in serious danger.

Honestly, I think "Respectless" is another good example of this. While yes, it is a bunch of telling since we JUST discovered the angel head and are technically meeting Velvet for the first time (yes, we saw her once before, but not for long), we can see from the interaction that she's actually fairly intelligent, deducing that Carmella was the one to kill the angel based only on her hesitance and a look she gave when the head was presented.
@sundalosketch4769

While the song also tells us despite her intelligent sleuthing, she- like the other Vees, are still very immature in comparison to other Overlords. Arrogant, projecting their own insecurities, showing only to each other their flaws and how easily they can stray from reason when things get heated. I loved watching the generational differences between them all

She didn't deduce that Carmilla killed the angel, she deduced that she knew how it died. Subtle but important difference. She also said she deduced it by Carmilla's face getting red and that it was "thanks to her being respectless". Carmilla's body language in that scene wasn't hard to read based on what Velvet said, BUT she wouldn't have that blatant body language if it wasn't for Velvet's strong character and ballsy respectless personality breaking Carmilla's composure. Her strength in that scene wasn't intelligence, although she isn't stupid in the scene by any means, the reason she was able to get the information was her confidence and brashness, and being able to stand her ground and keep her composure, frustrating Carmilla to her breaking point, putting her body language on full display.

Another interesting note about "Stayed Gone" that I've seen some people talk about. Alastor wasn't the first one to strike. Vox, upon learning that Alastor is back, had a not so small mental breakdown, and decided to do the equivalent of launching the pre-emptive strike, by sending the message to Al, quite literary stating: "I'm gonna make you wish that you'd stayed gone." effectively trying to tell Al, that he's not a rival anymore, as he has surpassed him by several magnitude, emphasising the fact by slandering Al and radio in general, very much akin to the "video killed the radio star" mentality. Yet through the entire time, Al not only kept his composure, and his wicked smile, but he threw all of it back at Vox, in a manner which (if I use Velvette's lingo for a moment) basically boils down to him typing "NO, U". And the cherry on top, once Vox completely lost it and blue screened, Alastor responded to him by literary turning his own words against him "I'm gonna make you wish that *I* 'd stayed gone." essentially responding to Vox's "I don't consider you a rival", by saying "I don't consider you."
@_ddlunacchiato6886

That last line "I don't consider you." is just menacing. Seems like in the entirety of 7 years, Vox wasn't the only one who's been rising to greater heights. Who knows what kind of deals and trickery Al's been up to in the same duration. Amazing analysis!

If you notice that Lilith and Alastor has disappeared for 7 years but the moment Charlie asks for the mum's help in the pilot episode, Alastor appears on the hotel's doorsteps. Definitely a coincidence. Won't be surprised Alastor has made a deal with Lilith, which would explain why he's not scared or intimidated by anyone, even Lucifer. And now Zestial has had rumors' Alastor has dealt with Angels so imagine if Alastor made a deal with an Angel, he would be almost unstoppable.

I also wanna point out how, something Vox said in complete privacy was said by Alastor, be it the start of the song being referenced in Alastors scene here. now it could just be "oh well the song is just structured that way" but the idea that Alastor had some way of hearing Vox's little threat here says a lot. (also would put stuff like him looking directly into the security camera before the meeting with the other overlords a sorta "yea I'm watching you too, vox" moment).

Honestly, it’s better. He didn’t cause the blackout, Vox did. And Alastor got him to do that just by riling him up. But because all other signals were out, his radio tower was isolated and the radio he was hosting through was battery-powered, it meant that not only did he get the last word, but everyone in Hell heard it, there was no way to mitigate it, and did so after tricking Vox into showing weakness just moments before. Man took dominance over a technopath who controls Hell’s information network with literally just a rickety radio tower, a single radio, and his words. That’s the showing without telling; Alastor didn’t even need to be powerful to pull that off, the slightest effort and wit on his part were enough.

What’s even better, he never curses. While Vivzie’s work does suffer from definitely trying too hard with the excessive cursing, Alastor ironically turns that into an amazing strength. In a world where everyone feels the need to curse constantly to assert themselves or just say it out of impulse, Alastor will make you shit your pants and assert himself effortlessly without ever having to resort to it. It results in others feeling more like bullies while Alastor feels like a predator stalking his victims.

Honestly the entire song and sequence is great. It effectively shows you what kind of person Vox is, not just a TV host but TV itself. He has a cooking show, a late night talk show, a news show, even a religious sermon styled show. He uses so many different mediums and switches up his style constantly trying to make it seem like he's much better than Alastor due to his versatility. Al even calls him out on it. Meanwhile Alastor has just his radio, and in the scene where they're on screen together Vox is constantly trying to push Alastor away but no matter what he doesn't budge, his pose never even changes. Just a really good way of showing how terrified Vox is of Alastor and how confident the latter is.
@stevelordofdarkness2340
@stevelordofdarkness2340 7 ай бұрын
It’s also a fun commentary on the versatility of radio in the face of “better” technology. How many people still have cable/satellite TV? Meanwhile, every single motor vehicle manufactured in the past seventy years is equipped with a radio that’s always within range of a transmitter of some kind. Vox’s biggest strength is also his greatest weakness, he has to innovate to maintain his power, with no guarantee that he’ll reach an audience as they must buy into his newest formats; whereas Alistor just needs a microphone and a simple AM/FM transmitter and someone will hear him. Video never killed the radio star, it never had a chance.

A small correction! It wasn't Alastor who cut the electricity, but Vox, who was overloaded cause of Alastor's return + bullying. Of course that doesn't change the fact that Alastor in general is a powerful chaotic force that wants to mess with the current Overlord oligarchy. But it does show that even if his opponent is someone as strong as Vox, he has ways to mess with them. Plus the two of them have history which I cannot wait to see xd

It also shows Alastor's highly manipulative nature. He didn't straight up attack Vox. Instead, he already knew his weak spots, fears and insecurities he was projecting onto Alastor. And instead of defending himself, he just used Vox's own insecurities against him. He knew Vox had a very fragile ego and used it against him. Now thats something scary. Sometimes, power isn't all about physical strength, but also about messing with your enemies's heads too, which Alastor is pretty good at.

I have a small prediction that i hust thought of: what if Alastor wants, or is just fine with, Charlie's plans for sinner's redemption to come to fruition because that would change the status quo drastically, potentially putting him on top in a new system, or at least in a very powerful spot (where he might tempt or tease sinners with the possibilityof salvation like he kinda already does with his endorsementof the hotel but in a much more direct sense). If Charlie or someone who actuality cares were to catch on then that would probably lead to a conflict if mass proportions as well. Just a thought, thanks for reading if ya did.

Things I love about this scene: - the whole duet is a straight-up call and response, with Alastor LITERALLY matching Vox's song (almost) beat-for-beat, not only making a complete fool of Flathead but further demonstrating his own wit and quick thinking in the process. which brings me to-- - the reprisal of Vox's opening verse-- which the mans sung BEFORE going live on TV-- implying that Alastor knows what Vox is saying about him, and giving HIS version of the verse straight-up telling Vox that he knows this, and that he has it out for Vox SPECIFICALLY on top of announcing his plans to all of hell. (quick acknowledgement that this and the previous point COULD just be 'because musical', it can be a bit hard to tell what's deliberately diagetic and what isn't meant to actually be happening in a scene, so... it COULD just be that, but it's still plenty in-character for Big Al either way haha) - the deformity and exaggerated proportions of Al's full demon form do SUCH a good job of portraying how truly twisted and evil inside he is, which is something that can be easy to forget from how fun and over-the-top silly his expressions of evil can often be. This does SO well at reminding you that yes, he IS in fact a huge threat that should not be taken lightly, nor assumed to be on 'our' side just because he's helping Charlie and co. - I feel like the reprisal verse really DOES make you seriously question whether his reasons for helping with the hotel are what he states to Charlie and co instead of something far more manipulative and sinister. This bit really makes you think 'shit, is Alastor the REAL big bad of this show actually??' for the first time, I think - his demon form pretty overtly emulating a wendigo, an extremely fitting representation for a cannibal and a murderer-of-murderers like him - Alastor's radio dial pupils emulating a ticking clock, both perfectly in sync with his words 'O H T H I S W I L L B E F U N' and also lending them additional weight with the notion that we are on a countdown to dangerville. this one little detail is such a clever and efficient way of amping up the suspense of this one shot and the entire scene as a whole

I love this scene because it shows despite his 7 year absence hes still perfectly capable of threating someone like vox. And to be fair alastor does have the souls of former overlords at his mercy, as revealed in episode 4 with husk saying he was once an overlord. Another song that has slowly become my favorite song next to loser baby is respectless. It shows how over confident the Vees are. It also does a great job in fleshing out Velvette, who has become one of my favorite characters. Respectless shows off velvette's intelligence but also her immaturity and over confidence beautifully

Yeah it kinda works in tandem Stayed Gone, which shows how damn powerful Vox is, but how it all goes to pot because he believes that makes everyone else beneath them, that they can power play but believe no one can. I wonder if Val will get a similar number showcasing how manipulative and fierce he is, but similarly is oblivious to the fact he's only one bully among many more powerful and savvy ones.

Let me put it this way, K? "Show, don't tell" is, from my perspective, a bit innacurate. I still would say that yes, when a choice is there, showing is a better option. However, I have a problem with the "Don't tell" in the saying. Because you could say that it doesn't mean that telling is forbidden, but it sure does soud like that. So, what's the problem with changing the name? "Show and tell" doesn't suddenly make it so there's a lot of meaningless talking, showing could still be the priority. It's just that I think that it could be beneficial to newcomers in writing, as it's not as confusing. That's just my take though, thank you for pointing out my mistakes in the original comment. Let's just be... civil, OK? That touches everyone, me included. I was kind of rude, and that's my mistake. I apologise for it.

telling is part of showing lol. Show don't tell doesn't mean that it's better to have a deaf movie. In this rule telling would be naration and long unrealistic monogues by characters explaining what is happening, like Vaggy telling Angel Dust who Alastor is (though this one is surprisingly good, because it creates suspence)

In writing you don’t want to break the flow of the story to tell the reader someone is evil, instead you want to show it. Show don’t tell is a technique in writing that makes writing better. If you were to show and tell it would ruin the flow, because you would show “the character being evil” for example, and then say “the character is evil.” Completely ignoring the fact that you just showed them being evil. This scene doesn’t tell us very little exposition, and shows us exactly how Alastor thinks of his rivalry, without him outright telling us how he feels about it. We don’t get a scene afterwards in your system that goes like this. “Oh yeah, Vox, I’m not worried about him, I easily can handle them, it’s quite fun.” - Adding this after showing us or having this before showing us wouldn’t work well with flow or be as impactful. Show, don’t tell, Is relevant in all good pieces of work, and is a saying developed to improve writing, it’s just better to show the reader through a persons actions and words, than to outright tell the reader how the person acts.

Alastor is far superior to Vox. Having seen the whole series now, Vox cannot survive without the other Vees. Alastor knows it (and says it), and I think Vox does too. Alastor, one the other hand, not only demonstrated his power and maintained his position alone, was able to come back from a 7 year absence and simply reclaim it from right under Vox’s nose. He doesn’t see the people he meets as people, but as potential pawns to use later. Every relationship he has is transactional, and I believe he’s genuinely psychopathic. Seeing the end of this song, it is quite clear that there is an end game. He has an intention in mind, reiterated by his part of the finale. There’s loads more I can add, I love his character so much.

The best part is the ending, where we get to see the actual mosnter underneath, the Alastor that was recognized, even among demons, as a monster. Also gotta love how for most of their back and forth, Alasto's "fight" with Vox is mostly a d*ck measuring contest for the masses, but after Vox loses power, Alastor adresses his rival almost directly, explicitly threatening that this isn't just about taking back his empire, it' about the Radio Demon coming personally for the Vs.

It made a really great contrast to Vox's hyperactive. flopsweat trolling. He figured that by peppering Alastor with insults, he could make the Radio Demon lose his cool. Instead. Alastor turned it right back on him, got him to kill the power to the entire ring... and then he *slowly* unveiled the single most effective threat in the entire series. He reveals his full demon form, throws Vox's *unbroadcast* words right back at him, and finishes up his threat display with a chilling, "Oh, this will be *fun."* Cut signal. Little wonder Vox drops an Atomic F-Bomb a moment later and busts out crying.

Another wonderful part of this scene, the musical number in particular, is how music here helps contextualize the conflict. In every other song associated with a confrontation (Hell is Forever and Respectless), the genre of music shifts as one character's voice dominates the other (Adam taking over with rock music, Velvette with British Punk Pop). In Stayed Gone, it starts with Jazz and ends with Jazz. As a genre, Jazz is deeply associated with 1920s New Orleans, which those following Hazbin would know is roughly the place and time period Alastor lived in. To that end, the song starting with Jazz foreshadows Alastor's triumph over Vox. But it also reveals that Vox is relatively tone deaf and doesn't know that he's fighting a losing battle right from the start (before Alastor even enters the fray, musically!).

We did get a "show don't tell" moment before this one when the Hazbin Hotel was attacked by Sir Pentious. We see during this moment, not only that Alastor can dispatch his foes with just a snap of his fingers, but that he has powers that go well beyond what one would otherwise expect from someone known as The Radio Demon. Equally telling is the reaction from all of the other characters, including Charlie Morningstar, the daughter of what is presumably the most powerful being of all in Hell. Everyone is shocked by it into complete silence with wide eyes, with the sole exception of Husk, the former overlord under contract with Alastor (IE: the only one who might already be familiar with Alastor's power level). Which actually seems like it might be an even bigger deliberate hint at some later plot point, given that Husk is also the one who taunts Alastor about being "also on a leash". It makes me wonder: Did Husk recognize those giant black tendrils? Or at least know that they were absolutely NOT within Alastor's capacity prior to his seven-year "sabbatical"? Did he figure out that Alastor sold his soul for more power all on his own just based on the fact that Alastor has powers he previously did not? Charlie: ("Holy crap!") Vaggie: ("Holy crap!") Angel: ("Holy crap!") Nifty: (radio static) Husk: ("So that's where you've been...")

2:24 it's actually way more interesting than Alastor himself cutting the power, he USES Vox to do it! He "hacks" Vox (as shown on his blue screen moment) via radio waves, and causes HIM to overload and shut down, and since Vox is connected to pretty much every device (and I imagine he's connected to all the eletrical power system of the pride ring at least) everything shuts down with him. It just goes to show, casually, how intelligent Alastor actually is, it gives us a taste of how he was able to outgrow the past overlords and make all the present ones fear him. But if he's trying really hard or not, we'll never know, because he never shows any weakness whatsoever, adding to the manipulative and unpredictable demon we know.

I genuinely enjoy the Hazbin team letting Alastor be a genuinely disgusting, horrific evil villain. Even if he comes across as quite benevolent at times, he is always one foot in the door of becoming the most horrifying monster he'll has ever seen.

I think he was almost killed by an angelic weapon and whoever he made the deal with helped him not die which would explain why he had stitches all over him.

Alastor invests in the hotel for his amusement but I believe he secretly believes it will work. Carmilla killing an angel proves to him that if the status quo is changed he will be the one sinner on top due to being the only overlord who invested in the hotel to begin with. Remember where others might see a problem Alastor sees opportunity and it isn't for more power it is all for chaotic fun.

I wonder what his association is with lilith. You can see him looking towards her in the picture and they both been gone for 7 years.

I do like that as the show progresses, Alistor is actually warming up to the gang. I think he even outright says he never expected to actually LIKE them. I think we're going to end up with an evil character that is paradoxically one of the heroes. His main goal is still to spread chaos, but he will fight for those he has found himself caring about too. Even if that puts him on the side of "good". Because you can do good deeds and not be a good person. ;)

The idea of a demonic, deer themed radio host that pulls the strings from his radio tower is so visually appealing to me.

This scene was what made me say that production value went way through the roof. It perfectly highlights how Vox thought he was in charge while Alistor is showing him just how horribly wrong he is

Every scene where Alastor shows even just a little bit of his power is the best scene

I agree with you. I love that part the most but tbh for me I love the whole scuffle song with Vox and Alastor. It’s my favorite with Loser Baby as a close second, Poison and Respectless tied for third.

I think the start of it is the most chilling, the way he says "Let's begin," with the snarl, and then the "I'm gonna make you wish that I'd stayed gone." He says it almost distastefully, like he didn't want to return or at least wasn't planning on it. The way he finishes it up with, "This will be fun." makes it seem like he either found a reason to return or even though he was forced to return, has found a way to make it fun for himself. Husk also mentions Al is on a leash which Al absolutely hates. I wouldn't be surprised if ultimately he was forced to come back but has found a way to screw with not only the denizens of hell, but also the one who put a leash on him. Perhaps lilith spent 7 years till she finally found something she could use against Al. If it is Lilith that has his soul, maybe it was less of a mutual thing and more of her finding blackmail on him after 7 years she could finally use.
