I got laid off yesterday. I initially was sad and bummed. I thought I would be ok. But today I started to feel angry and hurt. Like I can see looking back that I promoted 4 times in 6 years to leadership. I was trained and held to a standard of leading with empathy and compassion and transparency but then I was shown none. They read off a pre-prepared letter. That was it.

One thing I want to tell younge people as a 45 year old HR Director is that never be so confident that you “ never think it will happen to you “……I have had to lay off C-Suite level employees so it ABSOLUTELY can happen to everyone…..always be prepared and always network

I could never understand why anyone feels entitled to a job they’re hired into or why they think they won’t be let go. In America 🇺🇸 most states we are at will. We can let go or can be let go!

The best one ever saw in corporate America was HR director looking for an employee to schedule a "meeting" to layoff person. She went back to her office and got laid off the next hour. Oh well, as they say, not personal

So glad I found this video going through the same thing. I loved the people I worked with and got along with everyone. I was valued, but the corporate entity needed to do cutting and it was my turn. 20 + years gone in the blink of an eye. The ups and downs are definitely a part of the aftermath. For anyone that’s going through this it’s OK and keeping a routine is definitely beneficial.

Thanks for posting this video Shin. I can tell you’re still affected by it. It is hard to navigate forward after something like that. I can understand. I was laid off too. It has been more than a year. I can understand all of the emotions you are going through. Any additional tips to add would be to reach out to your support group, don’t stay isolated in the house, try to do social activities and work on expanding your network. This can create job leads sooner. The job market is rapidly changing. Don’t restrict yourself to your own idea of your next job. Be flexible and explore all the possibilities out there. Perhaps consider a pivot in your career if your current one will not lead you to opportunities. I hope to see your update video soon of your next job.

Layoffs have always occurred and accelerated in the 1990s. Every week, companies were closing, outsourcing, being sold due to globalization. It was a time of big change of loyalty to companies. On the flip side, inflation was low, and housing was affordable, no free lunch

Its as if everythings fallen to pieces and your trying to put it back together. I agree with your tips and how to keep going through a diffucult time. I think in the mist of all of this something better is on the way and youve learnt something from it which is important too. Sometimes things happen for a reason and we may not be able to see them durimg diffcult times but it is for a good reason. Also I have an oil diffuser you put essential oils in it and it helps calm me down too. The body shop balms like Sleep and Breathe help me too. I have a journal from LOVENDU they do anxiety ones, general mental health and they help me. Hope your alright and sorry for the long message❤

I got laid off yesterday. Last month my dad passed away and I thought they felt compassion for me but I guess not. I helped this company build the department up and at one point I was the only one with the knowledge (since my manager who was a great one left) and the company ended up being bought and they restructured everything. The first thing I heard when the meeting started was "just so you know we do not consent to the recording of this meeting", terrible people. The only thing I regret was not using my unlimited PTO more.

Layoffs happen, this goes to the concept of "Average" which has a huge effect where everyone at work is your competition. "Average" is a mathematical point in the middle where half the people are "Above Average" and the other half are "Below Average", no one is "Average". I found this concept true when I worked, the Above Average half continuously developed more skills and did well while the Below Average half fell behind, subject to layoffs, missed promotions and lower salaries. I was never the best but always strived to be in the Above Average half. When you have a job do everything you can to keep it.

I worked for a large Fortune 100 IT company for about 5 years. I probably billed more hours (i.e. dollars) that any other employee in our branch. When layoffs came, it didn't matter, I was gone. It's a numbers game. It's not what have you done, but what are you going to do. If the company doesn't see you making them money in the near future, then you are just a cost to them, say bye bye.

Why do the laid off these days believe this is a new phenomena? Employees have been let go for ages. What they didn't do was announce it on camera for the world to see. They dusted off their resumes and got to work. Seeking a job is a full time job!
@janetay879827 күн бұрын
The older generation spoke nothing of layoffs and never shared with the younger ones how to deal with such complex emotions. That's really pathetic and sad that you expect people to assume they know layoffs aren't new. These things must be discussed more often without judgement so the youngest ones can learn from us for their future.

@janetay8798 Listen, for the person laid off, I'm sure his or her family knew about, discussed it and dealt with the complex emotions brought about by it. What they didn't do was declare it to the world!

Your generation spoke nothing of layoffs and never shared with the younger ones how to deal with such complex emotions. That's really pathetic and sad that you expect people to just "brush it off". I'm sure some of your generation felt just as helpless and overwhelmed, but suffered more because their peers don't say anything about it. These things must be discussed more often so the youngest ones can learn from us.
